G'day Caleb, As the Fireman on 8A this day I would like to have you know that the stall off the bridge had nothing to do with letting steam and water out of the boiler at all. It was infact due to transmission issues with the DH, the dead weight of which, plus the 16 car train, was well and truly over the NA's ability to pull up the 1 in 40. We instead were brought to a halt and the crew rectified the issue before continuing.

Thank you for that! I was with 2 other “Gunzels” on the day, one being a well known “Anthony Holmes” of whom had said to us “The loco crew is probably Letting out water from the boiler, as per us usual after Wheelslip.” Thank you for the update!

G'day Caleb, As the second man on the diesal, I can also confirm that we did have a slight issue with the transmission that day, as for letting out steam and water from a boiler on a steam loco, it is done before leaving the running shed in the morning. We do not do let water and steam out of the boiler whilst out on the main line.
