Interesting idea. Would be curious to see comments from APBA players.

Dave, a friend of mine implemented something like that in his APBA Football League he was running and the other managers objected to it saying the 'defense' has the advantage since you are only 'measuring' when you get the ten yards. That means if no rule was in affect, it is always a first down. If the rule was in affect, then half the time it wouldn't be a first down...depending on the defensive card ratings and how many you added to the defense or offense. To make it fair for both teams, you should measure on all gains that come up a yard short too. That would balance the opportunities for both teams and not favor the defense or offense. I hope this makes sense...I use it all the time, but I simply use 'even or odd' to determine. What I like about your system is the home field...so I would use two d20's and always give the home team a plus 3. That would spice up the home field advantage.

Dave a 13yd completion from the 13 us a TD... period... that's what I think... however, if what you are doing works for you and you are having fun... go for it.

So by rule, 3rd & inches is recorded as 3 & 1. If you run another play and gain 1 yard, do you roll again, even though your ‘inches’ now implies gaining a yard is a first down?

I'm having fun. I'm not worried about it.

There in lies the dilemma with what you are doing...

I must inform APBA that you are NOT playing by APBA standards. You are modifying the un-modifiable (if there is such a word). APBA will be sending agents to your home to investigate this possible transgression against the rules of APBA! 😄😄
