I do not claim that this video demonstrates there is no God. It is not an argument against God in itself, so there is no argument from popularity or authority. I claim that the more scientifically and philosophically literate a person, the less likely they are to believe in a deity. If you think the concept of a God has nothing to do with the universe, logic, metaphysics, epistemology, human beings, etc., then this video is not for you. If you think it does have something to do with such subjects, then you might want to consider why the best experts on those subjects usually fail to see reason to believe in a deity.

The more scientifically literate, intellectually honest and objectively sceptical a person is, the more likely they are to disbelieve in anything supernatural, including god. These films are part of a compilation of some of the best examples of such individuals, and their thoughts on the divine. The ridiculous "religious fact" that Jesus Of Nazareth is the same thing as god is not written in stone, as the church so forcefully claims, but was voted upon at the first or second Nicea conclave in either anno 325 or 385, because the different religious factions were having arguments pro and contra and in order the get out of the quibbling they decided to have a vote. That's how Jesus the Nazareen became a deity, by way of a majority vote.

It is totally bizarre that at that time they changed Abrahamic monotheism into Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Then make up all manner of excuses as to why people should take that flavor of supernatural fantasy as fact. Some people think. Most do not and seem happier that way. Some people just struggle to live and so cling to a second chance.

Daniel Paulson wrote, "It is totally bizarre that at that time they changed Abrahamic monotheism into Father, Son and Holy Ghost." The Father, Son and Holy Ghost as "one Lord" is biblical. God is invisible, Jesus is the image of the invisible God, and the Holy Sprit is God's spirit dwelling in man. Daniel Paulson wrote, "Then make up all manner of excuses as to why people should take that flavor of supernatural fantasy as fact." That is rich coming from someone who believes the finely-tuned universe, an earth designed to support life, life itself, and the symbiotic nature of life, are products of dumb luck. LOL! Daniel Paulson wrote, "Some people think. Most do not and seem happier that way. Some people just struggle to live and so cling to a second chance." Some people think, but not those who believe in the magic of evolution. Dan

God works in mysterious ways is one of my favorite sayings among the religious. To me, it means that the supplicant was a good person who prayed, but didn't get the desired outcome. Rather than admiting that there is no god (the sack being empty), they make the failure of their prayers a "mystery." If I pulled the rip cord on a parachute, and nothing happened, I don't think I say parachutes work in mysterious ways.

Agree. Also, it’s funny how religious people always credit God with someone’s cure from cancer but then say that he gave us all free will and so doesn’t intervene when horrors and injustice occur on a daily basis.

@@scrumpymanjack I hate it when the Religious use the free will argument. If you hold a gun to my head and demand my wallet under pain of death, you can't say I'm giving you my wallet of my own free will. You also can't say that a god has given me free will if the result of choosing against their will is eternal torment.

Very nice video! I don't think people should base their belief upon what others think, even if those other people are Nobel laureates and professors in all sorts of different things. But there's nothing wrong with at least listening to them, and it's always important in cases like this which are basically unsolvable, that we listen to as many different viewpoints as possible, to make the decision that you think is the most believable and rational.

Agnostic Dame Alison "You cannot know enough to know that there is nothing that you don't understand and I think that it is hubris (arrogant, haughty) to assert that there is nothing within our comprehension." Good point. Thats why she is agnostic and not atheist.

She, like many others, do not understand that those terms are not mutually exclusive. Most atheists who understand the definitions would agree they are agnostic atheists, just as many theists agree they are agnostic theists.
@PrometheusLight
@PrometheusLight 8 жыл бұрын
+J Pararajasingham (Dr JTP) But those "definitions" were built and promoted by atheists, mostly. If you take the definition of "agnostic" proposed by Thomas Huxley (the man that coined that term), you'll see that his definition is self consistent. Personally, I don't like the idea of people defining words that other people use. This is ironic because atheists are always complaining that theists are throwing old dictionary definitions at them and claiming "dishonesty" or that atheists have the burden of proof for a positive claim. This is obviously disingenuous. I think you're doing the very same thing with the self identified “agnostics”. If you say that you are an “agnostic atheist” and prefer the label “atheist” as a synthesis of your position, I can say that I am also “agnostic atheist” (according to your definition), but that I prefer the label “agnostic”. In the end, if knowledge is a subset of “belief”, everything is belief and all knowledge is provisional. So, I prefer the label “agnostic”. But I understand what you say. That's all that matters.

Why is it odd after all that politicians are more comfortable talking about God than about numbers? One can get into a lot less trouble, and be held strictly accountable for almost nothing, by keeping the discussion nonverifiable, nonquantifiable and nonfalsifiable. God is just about perfect for that.

Yes, I believe them over Hitchenson,Dawkins,Sagan, and Harris. Its easy to observe the flesh we live in. "Athirst" is a term believers give to non-believers. Religion creates absolutes. They make categories, attempt to rationalize life regardless how irrational their beliefs may be. It creates groups of "us and them" tightening their own tribal close communities while creating more distaste for those who are not.

There are a lot of atheist professors who don't realize that they are atheists. The terms, "atheist", and "agnostic", answer two different questions. "Atheist", answers the question, "Do you believe in god?" with a "No", and "agnostic" answers the question, "Does god exist?" with an "I don't know." Most of these professors are agnostic atheists, like myself, but it is possible to be an agnostic theist. It is also possible to be a gnostic atheist, or a gnostic theist, but i don't know how one could defend either of those positions.

I didn't quite appreciate how vast the difference is between the definition and perception of the term atheist. I previously thought Dawkins was over the top in stressing how reasonable/corrrect the term is for the intellectually honest. But I've since realised it is a scary word for many, all the way up to these great intellects. I hope at least the video highlights this as an ongoing real issue, a necessary first step to getting it fixed, as you say.

And, for a religion, it should be understandable for all kind of people; educated-not educated, rich-poor, healthy-not healthy, and from every nation. So believing should be as easy as like this: "Every village must have its headman; every needle must have its manufacturer and craftsman. And, as you know, every letter must be written by someone. How, then, can it be that so extremely well-ordered a kingdom should have no ruler?" A kingdom which is great like this universe we see and we cant see.

With regard to truth, wisdom, knowledge and understanding God purposely closes many of these doors to many people simply because they would not hold the answers with a forgiving heart. The more you know the more you judge and the more you judge the more alienated from God you become. God doesn’t take many through the truth/wisdom path because of the fact they would slowly destroy themselves including those around them.

3:09 I have never thought of this, and I think its a great point. Very very few are the %100 pure in thought and deed amongst us. How would heaven be any different? Are there only 3 or 4 people in heaven? The vast majority of us commit some kind of sin, perhaps not something extreme, like murder.. but we all tell small lies, we all feel greed to a certain point, we have envy, we have lust, etc... So to be in heaven- this perfect place full of perfect people who feel none of these HUMAN traits... that would be akin to be living in a bland land of robots. To feel these traits make us human, its part of our imperfections... we need them.

Question this: Is it fair to offer salvation to one of your children, but to take the opportunity for salvation away from another, because the other child impedes the mortal or fleshy existence of the first child? How is it that God can be a father to some and not all, if he is the creator of all? The "Circumstances" that surround you are not naturally produced or statistically probable even, they are a product of what men do. They are also tools for learning, and they aid in salvation.

Inasmuch as the reality of the concept of freedom is proved by an apodeictic law of practical reason, it is the keystone of the whole system of pure reason, even the speculative, and the other conceps (those of God and immortality) which, as being mere ideas, remain in it unsupported, now attach themselve to this concept, and by it obtain consistence and objective reality; that is to say, their posibility is proved by the fact that freedom actually exists, for this idea is revealed by the moral law. So where is it the problem?

In a mother’s womb were two babies.One asked the other: “Do you believe in life after delivery?”The other replied, “Why, of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later.” “Nonsense” said the first. “There is no life after delivery. What kind of life would that be?” The second said, “I don’t know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths. Maybe we will have other senses that we can’t understand now.” The first replied, “That is absurd. Walking is impossible. And eating with our mouths? Ridiculous! The umbilical cord supplies nutrition and everything we need. But the umbilical cord is so short. Life after delivery is to be logically excluded.” The second insisted, “Well I think there is something and maybe it’s different than it is here. Maybe we won’t need this physical cord anymore.” The first replied, “Nonsense. And moreover if there is life, then why has no one has ever come back from there? Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery there is nothing but darkness and silence and oblivion. It takes us nowhere.” “Well, I don’t know,” said the second, “but certainly we will meet Mother and she will take care of us.” The first replied “Mother? You actually believe in Mother? That’s laughable. If Mother exists then where is She now?” The second said, “She is all around us. We are surrounded by her. We are of Her. It is in Her that we live. Without Her this world would not and could not exist.” Said the first: “Well I don’t see Her, so it is only logical that She doesn’t exist.” To which the second replied, “Sometimes, when you’re in silence and you focus and you really listen, you can perceive Her presence, and you can hear Her loving voice, calling down from above.”

The problem with men is they think; its hard to lead thinking men. A man who thinks will always consider whether an action is in their best interests or congruent with his personal beliefs. Men with faith are much easier to lead. Men with faith, men who might otherwise not raise a hand in anger, will cut the throat of a sleeping child if they you can make obedience an article of faith. And while on the subject, I've looked at your home page. It does not surprise me that someone so immersed in video games and super heroes would be adamant about his religious views. What is god, but the original comic book super hero?

The problem of evil is solved by humans free will. A perfect god would give you free will to choose to love him. Many of you on the other hand have chosen to use that free will to deny gods existence. But it's ok god still loves you because he created you and because he's a perfect being.

most people who consider themselves atheist aren't really so. they just believe in new gods, they idolize property and the market. certain religions warned people about worshiping material wealth, gold idols and whatnot. they pretend it's different, but it all really serves the same purpose, people living in fear, putting their faith in things they create themselves create, in their heads or with their hands. but real faith only comes from believing in humanity, and it's pitiful that many don't.

I wouldn't ask a roofer to answer my question about plumbing, and I wouldn't ask an unsaved egghead professor of anything to answer questions of the divine. If the question was about something in their field of expertise I might take their word, but not on the greatest mystery of all. As for the many different "formats" of religion its interesting to note old testament, the Torah, and Koran are very similar.

Cargo cults are an example of religions based on fallacious correlations (airplanes fly, so they must be magical because only birds can fly). Mormonism is an example of a con from the ground up transformed a religion. Either example works, depending on your argument.

It makes sense the assessment regarding the existence of any deity, or a "generic" God, the limited capacity to comprehend and grasp concepts attributed to such deity --like infinitude of wisdom, the existence of an all powerful spirit without cause; omnipresence and omnibenevolence. I personally cannot conceptualize such man-made ideas, so it has nothing to do with "belief", but of a recognition of my limited mind. Second, contradictions in a belief cannot materialize in the world, as in the lack of a rescuing reaction by an all loving and just, omnipresent god, when (for instance) facing the rape and torture of children (humans without free will) at the hands of psychopaths.

Is there consequences in sinning. Yes of course such as if you drive over the speed limit you get a ticket. Not Gods fault but yours. Christianity is all about seeking the relationship God has wanted with you before the foundations of the earth. A loving relationship filled with joy. My walk with God has been awesome. Not one boring day. I've seen tons of people healed with my own eyes. People I know with real sicknesses. God loves you if you like or not and he is seeking a relationship with YOU

Atheism can be a religion. Science too. There's a fanaticism there, and an intolerance that religions can possess.

Then perhaps the bee is God's greatest creation. Self sacrifice is such a novel idea, as when you commit suicide for a greater cause you will never know the outcome of the results anyway, allowing you to alleviate your doubts and leave them to faith rather than logic. Funny then, how those who commit suicide are called selfish and insane.

I find it frustrating, especially when repeated by some of our greatest intellects. Didn't one of the interviewees actually say the equivalent of "I don't believe in god, but I wouldn't describe myself as an atheist"? To quote another of our greatest intellects - "D'oh!"

I suggest you read Job chapter 38-41. If you have the courage to do that, then I invite you to come back here and do ONE thing greater than what YAHUA (God) has done. If you succeed, I am sure there will be many that have commented here that might fall down and worship you. Until then, you will be in my prayers. Shalom

As someone in Bible College we speak & HATE religion. It's a disease filled with dead works, rules/regulations, people who manipulate others with the word of God, etc. True Christianity is all about relationship with God your father. He is not interested in your good deeds no is he loving you any different if you sin. God's love is unconditional to all the world. He is not bringing destruction up on the world neither is he putting punishing people today. God put all of his wrath on Jesus.

About religion, they are not different from any other person who doesnt have even a bachelor degree in any area. Because these people are not received education about religion, so they are not educated about religion, like any other person who isnt educated about religion. Its is a common mistake we make, mis-mixing areas and professionalities. It's like to say someone "Hey you're driving car extremely good, Im sure you can fly a plane too.". Driving car and flying a plane is very different.
