Ironically enough, Draft Kings was the ad right before the video. About gambling on NHL games, a video that I watched early by Jeff Marek, both Jeff and a reporter who writes for The Athletic (his name eludes me) both agreed that players who bet on NHL games in the past received Lifetime bans.
@RRaquello Жыл бұрын
In the NFL in the 60's, Alex Karras & Paul Hornung, both Hall of Famers, were suspended for betting on NFL games. They received one year suspensions. They didn't bet on games involving their teams (Detroit and Green Bay) which is why they didn't receive lifetime bans. In the NHL case in the 40s went much deeper, but also involved the two players who were banned betting on games they played in. That's what will draw the "death sentence". If a player was caught betting on NHL games, he'd get a harsh suspension, but if they didn't involve his own team I doubt he'd get a lifetime ban.
@abovewater6918 Жыл бұрын
I have no issue with this suspension. My issue is that the NHL doesn't take other things nearly as serious. Things that are worse offenses. You only get 7 games for kicking another player, with a skate, which could kill a person if it went badly

Back in high school, I first placed a sports bet (I shouldn't have been allowed to, under 18). After all, other kids showed off their winnings like some geniuses. Then the best thing happened- I've lost. It was a very cautious bet, hardly a long shot. I found myself rooting for teams I didn't care about and begrudging players and goals for no objective reason. Then I realised: -It's not fun, and it makes watching sports an anxious activity. -The odds are against me. It has to be, or the company wouldn't make money. -All those kids telling winning stories are gross survival bias (though I didn't know the term at the time). For each win, there are several kids keeping quiet about their losses. I never waged on sports again.

I think a lot of the frustration and response from people online really comes from a culmination of other issues fans have with the league and isn't really considering the Pinto situation for what it is itself (as with your excellent points, it is likely a well-earned suspension, based on Pinto's and the NHLPA's response). Like you said, there's a lot of frustration with the prevalence of advertising for betting by the league (all the ads on articles and broadcasts discussing the issue are all very laughable moments), so it seems hypocritical of the league to then more severely punish a player for this then things that fans feel deserve much more attention, including on-ice behavior, like dangerous hits, and other off-ice behavior, like the several players related to the Hockey Canada investigation. Really these issues are actually unrelated, and Pinto being suspended does nothing in relation to these other things getting attention, but I think a lot of fans just feel like the league will do absolutely nothing for so many things and then see Pinto get a 41-game suspension and get mad that the league could be doing more about other things.

It’s hard to say whether or not if the league made the right choice, because we were given such vague information. This isn’t like a player only getting a $5000 fine for nearly killing someone on the ice. We have eyes, we can see in situations like that when the league is making the right call or not. Most of this situation was done behind the scenes, and we can only go off of what they are telling us. We might never get the full story, but even then, we can’t just rush to say the suspension was warranted or not.
@nickdunne9530 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. We don’t have enough info to understand whether or not what he did was serious. If he was giving inside info or even putting himself into debt with the wrong people, that’s enough to potentially compromise the game. That puts the NHL liable to all sorts of legal issues and can ruin the influx of gambling sponsorships and dollars into the league. There is something to be said though about the bombardment of advertising and inevitable jump in problem gambling. Players are people and will get caught in that wave.

@RRaquello Жыл бұрын
@cdfmmcc The thing that makes gambling abuse so bad is that it can go on for a long time before anybody notices. You can't hide a drug or alcohol addiction for long once it starts getting bad, but with gambling it can go on for years before the family discovers their money's all gone, their house is gone, their lives dragged in the gutter. The other thing is that it's actually a form of self-abuse, with a lot of masochism in it. The compulsive gambler doesn't want to win. He wants to lose. When he wins, which they do sometimes, he doesn't stop til he loses what he's won. The fact that the NHL is promoting this stuff is as disgraceful as if they were peddling heroin, cocaine or any other type of compulsive behavior including pedophilia. It's too bad guys like Gretzky are willing to associate themselves with this "industry".

@@trevoravery9270 Nothing wrong with playing a $2 scratch off ticket or any kind of moderate gambling done for fun. I do it myself on rare occasions. But when you know someone who five years into a marriage finds her husband has taken all of their money out of the bank and blown it on bets, hasn't paid the mortgage, hasn't paid income or property taxes for several years and finds themselves foreclosed and thrown out of their house with two young kids and owing tens of thousands of dollars in shared debt to the US government (both parties sharing the debt obligation because of joint income tax) and the husband arrested because stealing money from friends and family, then you can understand where gambling can lead you. You're life is ruined and you're stuck with a bill it can take years to pay off. The person I'm speaking of in this case was a close relative. It's not the only case in my family. Happened to my grandfather, who lost a business over gambling debts and while he never got arrested, he had to "take it on the lam" with his kids (one of whom was my mother) and his wife because some of the money he lost belonged to his business partner. You're going to tell me drug addiction is worse than this? At least with drug addiction there is a warning. You can't hide a heroin or meth addiction for long, but with gambling you only find out when the police or sheriff comes knocking at your door with a foreclosure or eviction notice and then it's too late. You're already cooked.

I'm sure there are smaller hockey companies out there who would love to give you some gear to test and talk about. And in your way too, not just spouting a bunch of marketing nonsense. I mean I try to do what I can to contribute to your success, but there's only so much to do. And donations during streams and a channel membership are all fine and dandy, but it just feels stupid to throw money at you, when you could be making a lot more money off of companies by just talking about some hockey gear. Utilize the power of consumerism. Personally, I'd love to hear your thoughts about hockey gear and whatnot, even if it's superficial. Hell, I'd love it even if it's just you rambling about hockey with a bunch of new sticks from the sponsor in the background. I'm sure your core audience is both smart and old enough that they would gladly watch some ads disguised as hockey gear reviews to help pay for another trip to Vegas or Disneyland for you and the fam, without throwing a hissy fit about you selling out. Just because you deserve it. Use the success you've earned with your hard work man. The audience isn't going anywhere.

So for me the 40 game suspension reeks of semi illegal activity ie dog fighting. For those of u who don't remember around 2007 Michael Vick was caught and arrested on dog fighting charges and it ruined his NFL Career so I hope its not that but the heavy suspension suggests to me its something illegal.

The problem was likely discovered last year, thus not having signed a contract.

They said he wasnt gambling on hockey games, so what on earth warranted a suspension for half a season if gambling is allowed and he wasnt gambling on hockey? I think thats why people are mad, it doesnt add up and as usual the nhl has zero transparancy

The NHL was alerted by one of their partners that something was up. The NHLPA negotiated the 41 game suspension, feeling it could have been much worse. My guess it whatever happened was illegal and that's why they aren't giving us details.

NHLPA could develop program to help players deal with betting issues? maybe even provide a way for players to bet legally and ethically?

What's the last day they can sign him? Is it after the suspension, or do they have to sign a suspended player? And considering their cap situation, would they trade a contributing player, to sign a suspended player?
@captbloodbeard Жыл бұрын
They can sign him anytime this season, there's not limit for group 2 RFAs.

my problem is, NHL says they can gamble if they want as long as it is not NHL games they bet on. And according to what I see Pinto didn't bet on NHL games So wtf is the problem? Was he "throwing" games last year? without them coming out and saying what he did now the rumors can run wild.
