Logic trumps the rule book every time, whether you are hunting or at work. Many years ago I had a manager tell me that the Policy and Procedures Manual is a guide used to help managers make decisions. You need to have a good reason if you deviate from the "rules." But if you never deviate from them you can't be an effective manager, or leader or hunter.

Yet another great video by Dan and Mario. All the canned hunt guys can make all the videos they want. They aint hunting on public or in all the beautiful but thick variable cover we hunt. Thank you Dan! Ive had bucks rub trees right below me when I was only 6 feet off the ground in marshes but my body was very hidden. Goes to show that you can push the envelope if everything is right including the air currents. Tim Nelson

I set up where my intel tells me a big buck is whether it's on the ground or put a stand 6' in the air. If you have done your homework and can sneak in the buck shouldn't be expecting you waiting for him. I have friends that have to be 20 ft in the air. I've shot 98% of my deer sitting on the ground, not in a blind but nestled in a couple of small trees and the deer are not expecting a hunter to be where they've walked a million times safety. The best stand, blind or place to be is where you can get a good shot at the deer. If I find a good spot I can count on it producing for years because the deer just like those trails best year in and year out. Good video!

Yall and Jason Samkowiak are teaching the same. The height is situation dependent. I have been as low as 10 feet, because that's where the cover was. I don't usually go much higher than 18. Great video. These off season lessons are great for staying focused for next season (90 days away for GA).
@jamesrthe22 жыл бұрын
Completely agree! I've had success from 20+ feet, and from sitting on a 5-gal bucket. Play to your strengths & those of your spot! It's also hard to get a kid up to 30' without a crap-ton of noise and/or a panic attack. Those hunts always happen lower for me.

Saddle is versatile but requires more movement, sticks & hang on stands are extremely lethal.
@BenDownTooLong2 жыл бұрын
Not looking to start a dust up, but how so? The set up is virtually the same. 3-4 sticks and platform is about the same movement as 3-4 sticks and a hang on- if you are saying that people move to much while in the saddle, I can agree with that. I can't stay still in mine- I think I need some Ritalin, it hasn't ruined me yet (that I know) but I am sure the big bust is coming.
@underdogoutdoors2 жыл бұрын
@@BenDownTooLong Agreed, deer often surprise us, come in from unexpected directions, or suddenly "appear" while we are looking at our phones. They pick us off when we move. I couldn't position for shots in the saddle without lots more movement than other stands. I still use the saddle when it's the only option. I could use Ritalin too! lol

Each situation is different. I've shot deer at so many different heights. Including sitting on the ground tucked into the brush or even leaning a few sticks to break up my outline. Don't like to move too much stuff. Mature deer notice you messing with everything in their bedroom. Hate pop up blinds. Unless you're on private land and they can be left out. But still don't care for them. Love hunting from the ground in the right situation. Allows me to get in tight and quiet. Don't be afraid to change things up. Think outside the box.

The beast stand and sticks have dramatically improved on my confidence. I know that I can get in just about any situation and set up. My buddies still use climbers and I hear them tell me. You won’t find a tree to get up in down there. Then I go and find some little dinky tree where nobody ever sits and I usually see something.

@cryptidoutlaw87072 жыл бұрын
Lol I have argued with guys for years trying to get them to understand that getting 30 feet up a tree is not how you kill mature bucks. Beating a dead horse sometimes. Very rarely does a stand need to be that high. Only time I have ever hunted that high was in very step mountain terrain.
@AndyHardCore192 жыл бұрын
I definitely find myself hunting lower in a lot of situations. There’s only one tree I’ve hunted out of in the last 4 years that I was higher then 20 feet. But I had to be to beat the thermals.

How about talking about bow hunting from the ground? Not everyone needs to be in the trees when bird season is on. I was nearly shot when a grouse flew my way followed by shot less than a foot away from me. Who's fault is that? My fault for being in the tree!
@john910832 жыл бұрын
I was always a fan of hunting high in my younger days but the older and wiser I got there was no need. Like you said if you play the thermals,wind,and hang your stand in good cover. When did I say my stand was the only way? and... No... You cant get a climbing stand in any tree. You cant get around limbs. and you cant saw them on most public where I hunt, not that you would get away with it 75 yards fro a bedded buck... Instead of arguing and attacking, try taking from the video what will help you.

@@thehuntingbeast I'd love to see you do a video on a climber on a third of the trees you hunt out of especially the one's on a 45 degree angle cause I'm sure the line of sight is exceptional when your stand is laying back on a 45 with no way to level it. A buddy of mine had always a pile of LW climbers around and now he has a pile of hang ons and the climbers are in the rafters collecting dust. Some folks just love too argue instead of listening and listening from everyone offering simple experienced ideas and turn them around to simply argue. Life's too short to argue so take from it what you will or leave it. Be safe out there.
