Nice vid Gary, this is Lowell Wilson. I saw two Raymond Johnson covers that were swiped from American editions for different British titles that we didn't know about! "Love and Desire and Hate" & "Halfway Down The Stairs". Thanks for showing these👍

Lowell, loved your video on the work of Ray Johnson and your article on him in Illustration. I also have done some articles for Dan in Illustration, it is a terrific magazine and your dedication and research is much appreciated.

Most of my experiences with Panther are horror and science fiction. Another great video, you own everything.

Hi Gary! Another great episode featuring some wonderful books, some of which I've never previously seen here in the UK. You note a Maguire cover on one of the Panther titles, and I often do a double-take when I see Panther books which re-used the same cover art as different US paperback titles. For example, the 1958 Panther paperback (No.829) French Girls Are Vicious by James T. Farrell, and which you display at 8.32, is a cover swipe from the US Pyramid Books (G311) title Fury With Legs by Gil Lawrence, and which was published earlier in the same year, and Panther 913, Halfway Down The Stairs by Charles Thompson reuses the cover art from Harry Whittington's Avon (T-241) paperback original Teen-Age Jungle (and which Lowell Wilson also notes further up this thread). And, of course, there are many more examples; so, accordingly, I always check the title on the Panther edition as the cover art is often the same as earlier different US paperback titles.

Hi, David, yes Panther in the UK often used, or re-used American paperback cover art.

Thank you. Great artwork on these books. Now I need to find some Eric Frank Russell as I have only read one or two shorts. What did you think of Suicide Ranch? I haven't read it. The Pulp Encyclopedia didn't actually recommend it so much as saying it was a very weird and unusual western. This was good enough for me to want to read it as I love weird westerns such Joe R. Lansdale stuff.

Enjoy Russell, Wasp, Somewhere a Voice has 7 great stories, The Space Willys is terrific and funny. Suicide Ranch was a weird.book, it was ok but i could not get into it. Did not finish it, but it was interesting but not just for me.

@@garylovisi357 Have you read Dreadful Sanctuary? Sounds like it might be relevant to today's insanity. Is it good?

The cover art on those books is great. I wonder if the artists typically read the books for inspiration, or if they were just given a scenario to paint by the publisher.
@garylovisi3572 жыл бұрын
Sometimes they did read the book, but mostly they were given a treatment or synopsis
@garylovisi3572 жыл бұрын
Most of the time they were given a synopsis or told a basic image, like a certain type of woman, dressed a certain way holding a gun, shooting a gun, or shooting a guy. Simple directions like that, but that was for proven artists with a well-Known track record. Respected professionals who could always be counted on to turn in a top notch cover painting.

Did you read most of those books? Nice video, thank you....
