I too have struggled growing radishes. Last year, I started adding azomite to my soil after watching another KZbinr, and I finally got radishes. Not 100% certain that’s what did it, but that was the only change from previous years. I have assumed it was and that the trace minerals was what my soil lacked. Also, they prefer cool weather, but I had success under planting with larger vegetables and they were happy in the shade.

In one of my past videos where I showed the GS I had the broccoli head forming, I got 2 nice big heads from the 2 plants I had there and small baby ones from the extra shoots, I definitely think I need like 5 plants to make it worth it growing them... but now at least I know they do great there for next year.

Radishes definitely prefer colder weather. They bolt easy. If you let them flower you should try the pods though. They are like a spicy sweet pea pod type taste.

My broccoli in a raised bed did something called “ buttoning”. Beautiful leaves but no heads. I believe it is because of too hot weather too soon.

I have grown radishes for years but last spring and again this year my radishes have been a huge fail. I believe it's been to much rain, mine also had killer roots but no radish to speak of. Sow a few more radish seeds and see if they do any better this time around. I did grow some beautiful globe white radishes no problems with them this year and they only take 25 days.

Same with the radishes. I had some decent ones last fall and today I heard that radishes do better as days start to shorten in the fall. Before vegetable gardening I never realized how much day length affects plants. I’m going to try again this fall 🫠 and do some research. Problem is that one random hot day that ruins all my efforts 😅

I can’t grow radishes to save my life! I’ve given up! My main problem is that my garden is on my deck and I have a “visitor”…..first time in all the time we’ve been here, a groundhog has discovered my plants…..and the little thing isn’t shy! I shooed it off several times today and have been researching how to keep it away…..so tomorrow I’ll be making cayenne spray and will also make sprays with essential oils they don’t like! The stinker was even eating feverfew! Doesn’t like basil or oregano, cilantro or lemon balm but went wild over my okra, squash and coke plants! You know that means WAR11. I don’t want to hurt anything and won’t but I’ll spray the organic homemade sprays and pray it works! Little stinker!!!

Busy times! This is what I’ve learned- Broccoli-brassicas like heavy soil. I had soil delivered once and wasn’t happy as it was a clay based topsoil until I learned how well the brassicas grew in it. They are heavy feeders and clay holds nutrients and water. I started way early this year 4/15 under low tunnels and switched covers or added as needed. I had First time GREAT success with Bak Choi that looked State Fair quality and Napa Cabbage. I am moments away from harvesting broccoli heads and the Brussels I’m sure will be 3+’ high again. By fall I top Brussels so they concentrate on filling out if needed and I trim up bottom leaves as they grow. The one thing I noticed this year and can’t explain is the appearance of cabbage moths in April and all of a sudden they were gone. Maybe they didn’t like the netting😅 and I will not grow brassicas without netting anymore as it’s impossible to get those worms out of the veg. Radishes-last year the heat and drought forced early shade cloth use and I had radishes planted in the shadow of fabric and we installed drip irrigation. I also used a couple varieties-I like many I struggled to grow radishes-the so called simplest veg to grow. I had AMAZING radishes last year! Beets-same as radishes. They were growing in the shade of broccoli and bulbed up very nice last year. I don’t believe they like full sun as I’m trying them again next to peas and it’s a slow go. Plus some bird activity isn’t helping. So I will try in light shade again. Lettuce-mine was slow and then we had only a few brief moments of high temps and they started turning bitter. They still look great but suspect this weekend’s heat they may bolt. The temperatures are fooling even long time gardeners like me so don’t feel bad. It’s difficult. I couldn’t figure out why I had 3 plum trees in gorgeous bloom all compatible produce only 2 plums on 1 tree!😣. I spoke with Gardener Scott and now I remember what happened-we had freezing temps that week and I quit covering them that week as I was knocking buds off and said sink or swim-they sank. The apples and Haskaps fared better. Quick snaps of cold and heat trigger plants to think they have been through a season and bolt and freezing temps during fruit bloom spells disaster. We have been in severe drought all last year and this last week we had over 5” of rain and all last summer 3.5” 😮!! I believe it’s the return of La Niña weather pattern which brings back northern rain-Z5a, WI. I’m hoping the rain doesn’t dry up like last year as that’s what happened. However the amount we’ve had and cool temps don’t play well with some plants like peppers as they have a bit of lime green color. The heat will be Cranked up after Thursday though and many plants will bolt Or finally kick into gear. Luckily the native soil is sandy. So it’s all about temps and how you manage the soil. The other is what varieties of vegetables you are trying to grow as not all do well everywhere. So try different locations and varieties and take notes. It was a fluke that the radishes turned out for me and then I realized it was too hot in our micro climate. I don’t have need for grow towers, but I see Renee’s Garden carries many baby vegetable seeds that I think is about all the towers can handle. Our soil was badly destroyed by previous owners and I’ve worked on it for years, but the addition of leaves and arborist bark in the last at least 3 years has proved worthy as we now have worms. Hope that info helps some who are stumped and discouraged to figure out why some vegetables don’t produce in your garden.

It's all like a maze when it comes to gardening.... you remember your ways from last year, you try new routes and sometimes you have to go back and start again. See, beets have never been a problem for me and when it comes to brassicas I completely agree that some protection is needed otherways the bugs will eat them for you.

So full and beautiful! The strawberries look wonderful.❤ I still haven't covered my strawberry patch, so I still haven't gotten any strawberries. I will do that first thing tomorrow. I repaired irrigation all day today. I had a great broccoli harvest, too! The cauliflower never comes; only in the fall. I don't know why I keep doing a spring planting! I just tore out the broccoli, cauliflower, and lettuce yesterday. I was upset with myself because I didn't have seedlings ready to go in. I guess I will just direct sow tomorrow.😊

I honestly think it's the radish seeds this year that are bad, I know a lot of my plants like the allium after they flowered this year the seed pods were non-existent so there will be no reseeding for next year. Something in the rain or air I believe is causing sterile seeds.
