December 9th saw the release of the first trailer for Jason Reitman’s “Ghostbusters Afterlife”, the sequel to the original movies which also negates the original Paul Feig’s remake from 2016.
While he is not in the trailer, Bill Murray is by all accounts in the movie - but there was a lot of back and forth involved in making that happen! Murray always delivers great performances IF he does show up on set, and that is a big "if".
In this retrospective minidocumentary, we look back at the history of Ghostbusters, and Bill Murray's troubled relationship with the franchise.
This is the spiritual prequel to our earlier Bill Murray video:

My dad is retired FDNY, he was down at the old Ladder 1/Engine 1 which is the old firehouse used in GB, well they shot at the actual location. He and his company were actually there as both required for filming by NYC but are background firefighters in the scenes. My dad said every time the director said “Cut”, Bill Murray would bee line it directly to the bar across the street buying drinks for everyone. Trying to get him out of the bar and back on the set was difficult every time. So if it looks like Murray is lit throughout the whole movie, it’s because he is. 😂

I think that Bill Murray's portrayals of his characters are superb, particularly in films such as "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," "Lost in Translation," "Groundhog Day," "Little Shop of Horrors," "Zombieland," and, of course, "Ghostbusters." Finding out that he's temperamental and aloof doesn't change that.

@@legionarybooks13 I read that the part of Winston was supposed to go to Eddie Murphy. If he would have accepted the role I bet Winston would have had a bigger part in the movie. Ernie Hudson I guess was the non believer, the skeptic, maybe he was supposed to represent the audience watching the movie. At least in GB 2 Winston was just as important as the other three characters and had just as much screen time as they did.

The suing by the city and courtroom scene are some of the best parts in the movie because it shows how society really is, no matter what is happening in the world, we got to have someone tangible we can blame, and the people that are not there are always gonna have their own version and disbelief over what happened.

Make sure to watch their other video about Murray's reluctance to suit up for a third installment. The mostly untold story seems to be that Ramis and Murray got into some big fights on Groundhog Day and Murray never again spoke to Ramis until he made a reconciliation shortly before Ramis died. Murray's public reluctance to do Ghostbusters 3 was probably a smokescreen for his reluctance to work with Ramis again, or to even speak with him. Murray couldn't very well on a talk show talk about the behind-the-scenes problems between him and Ramis. And, sadly, this explains why only after Ramis' death did Murray start doing more nods to Ghostbusters in public, and show far less resistance to participating in GB2016 or Afterlife.

Seems like the Ghostbusters franchise has had a very rocky history overall, which is a shame given how the original movie was perfect at starting a franchise... and then Columbia (and later Sony) squandered it, along with Bill Murray's stubbornness and the fact that there were too many cooks in the kitchen in regards to production. Though as far as I'm concerned, The Real Ghostbusters cartoon series is the only sequel to Ghostbusters, especially when you consider it keeps true to the heart and soul of the source material and doesn't disrespect it like the actual sequel and 2016 "reboot" did. Yes it wasn't perfect, but it was FAR better than what we ultimately got.

It was at the expense of John Landis, who had directed Murphy and Dan Aykroyd in Trading Places and fell out with Murphy while later making Coming To America with him. Landis was a friend of Aykroyd's - he had also directed The Blues Brothers and Spies Like Us. On the set of The Twilight Zone movie, in a segment directed by Landis, Vic Morrow and two young actors had been killed in a helicopter accident which led to a notorious Hollywood trial, in which Landis was charged with manslaughter for his supposed negligence but acquitted. Aykroyd had also appeared in The Twilight Zone. He thought Murphy's joke was mean and offensive but Murray defended it as funny, hence the argument.
