@@Stroke-it-2-Handed there is absolutely nothing in evolutionary science that says that any one feature can have only one reason for its appearance. Myriad pressures were on these animals and it is likely that we will never fully understand all of them. For airborne animals to have such large structures, they had to have been extremely advantageous.

Megaraptorans are basal coelurosaurs while therizinosaurs are basal maniraptorans, which are also coelurosaurs.

Interesting idea. I suppose it depends on exactly how specific the conditions must be for them to result and whether such conditions are very tightly connected to the emission. But their super short duration would probably complicate things regardless.

Pycnofibere, not feathers. They were a kind of fuzzy covering on all pterosaurs, and have been known about for a long time. What this research states is that pycnofibers had display colourings similar to display feathers in modern birds.

With most fossil discoveries, there is barely even one bone fragment in the entire specimen. Having parts of the spine, ribs, jaw, and pelvis is considered relatively complete.
