This story is in two ways, it’s not always like this but sometimes the diasparos are the ones who are selfish and never keep in contact with family’s back home like sometimes wen u just want to know bout their health nd call em they ghost you thinking everyone is after their money then come home after several yrs Nd expect a wholeheartedly welcome wen the family are struggling financially and the diasporas are out there with their fat pockets so don’t always blame the families back home coz no one will welcome a stingy family who doesn’t even know ur name ✌🏾

Their* so what right do they have to feel some type of way because of their financial statues. Am all for helping my family on what I can afford but they have not right on me and my money. This whole mentality is what is enabling our people back home to fend for themselves. They don’t want to work nor do nothing because they will always have money coming in so why even bother.

Thats the thing you seem to think we have fat pockets🤨 wallahi many of us after paying bills have only a little left to eat whilst a lot of you eating fresh meat everyday. A lot of us youngsters are broke and we collect the ticket money for a year to just come somalia. Just because were abroad doesnt mean we’ve got “fat pockets”. You can tell from your family members who just want your money and those who want you as family so not everybody is the same. When you visit half my family you come back empty and the other half you come back with a lot of love and gifts. Plus maybe get to know your family during their stay instead of randomly calling and expecting us to know your name

I went to Nairobi last month and met my dads aunt aka my “Ayayo” for the first time. She was so sweet at first but then she started asking me to give her son my laptop and I explained to her that I use my laptop for school and work. Mind you my dad gave her brand new phones and money. I told her If I wanted something I had to work for it I haven’t gotten a free handout from my family since I was 15. AND THEN she tried to get me to fake marry her son so he can come to America. She asked for my mothers number so she can pitch her dream to her and in my mind I knew my mother would say hell no but she lied and said I was in love with her son. Her son is younger than me by 4 years and we haven’t spoken to each other since I got there. I was so uncomfortable and hurt low key because I realized the only reason why she was being so nice to me is so I can take her son back to the states. After I told her firmly no she literally switched up, she didn’t even say bye To my dad and I When we left. I got a hotel to stay in for the remainder of my trip. Will I ever keep in touch with them? No.

This happened to me . I spent three months back home during the pandemic and whenever family visited it was for financial reasons or for me to pay for dalxiis. I didn’t have the finances to be paying for these outings constantly when a group of them would offer to ‘take me out’ . My family as far as I’m aware are not in poverty and I saw cousins having a great time during at aroos and parties on Snapchat. I was left isolated for months. In the end it left a sour taste , I went with so much hope and expectation and left with memories of being lonely .

From my experience your family back home have an image in their minds that you're from a wealthy and prosperous country and that's what pushes them to ask for money! On the other hand, people who come from the West in particular have another attitude in their minds that all the visitors are for financial purposes. I live in Hargeisa and have considerable number of family and friends in overseas and I always try for them not to misjudge or misunderstood my visit. I sometimes try to avoid their visit but that is hard when you're the only ones they have in the country.

In addition, the attitude local people had from the ones returning home has changed here in Somaliland. In the past, I used to see lots of people coming to my aunts and uncles asking for money. For those able to give to the people asking or not asking but needs support happily it is pleasing indeed. Giving is barakah, and all money and other worldly things you give, gives you more rewards later when you need the most. However, I don't think people overseas are fat pockets and those back home are selfish either. It just a lot of assumptions that people of each groups think about each other. I am talking about experience, I recently went back after 20 years and I loved every minute of it, to meet older relatives and new ones. This film story is possible for some people and it is sad.

Nice production that describes a sad reality for some of us.

Look at the roads, even look at ethopia. Somalia is still living in the 80s. After a while you learn who is who here. The rest it is no mercy, no contact, they have ruined their faces. My sister at first didn’t pick up on it but whenever she would try to go to more high end shops and restaurants they would think of every excuse to not take her and go with her. They would also try to tell my mom not to give money to other distant family members just so they could keep all of it for themselves. Mind you my mom has been funding for them paying for their rent, food, clothes etc.. then they have the nerve to have disrespectful behavior. Waaxasi waa ceeb and it’s not right. As a African American I don't get this if any of my family is broke if they need help food or rent the family getting that Together no problem if you got it we got it if I got it we got it y'all need to get it together and start helping each other.
@salmaomarelmi2 жыл бұрын
u won't get it because ur extended family all are in the same boots as you are. you work, they work. you earn money. they earn money. if your struggling, they help you and visa versa. in this mentality, you wouldn't understand what many diasporans would go through. the 'extended' family that youve never met heard word that you're visiting town, and they assume because you live abroad in a rich country, you are rich too. america is rich, but most americans arent. so they ask you for money, you give out of respect, they ask for more, you give again out of respect. it continues to the point you're paying their rent, for their education, for their leisure and for anything else they 'want' and not need. they become so dependant on the diasporans who provide for them, that we get to the point we can't provide for ourselves. my mother is paying for my uncle, who settled in america around 5 years ago. my mother is paying for her sister, who just arrived in the uk to stay with us a few months ago. my mother is providing for her sister's family back in Nairobi, and her sick mother's welfare. she is left with a little sum of £500 and that is then deducted for living expenses which barely cover rent alone. my older brother and sister and i work full-time and are full time students, even our own money is going to the extended cousins to fund for their college degrees and housing. they don't listen when we say we haven't got much money, because in their heads rich country = rich people. that's one of the many impacts that stems from the civil war and the 2000-2020s terrorists. so for you to not get it and saying that we need to get our shit together is ignorant as fuck and you should really think about what else you might be wrong about. especially when you feel the need to talk over an issue that concerns the somali community, how i see it is you lack critical thinking skills seeing that you really can't think deep enough to see issues within your own community and focus this energy to bettering your own community. i heard some states are re-issuing the ban on race theory, maybe you should re-direct your feeble mind to fighting that.

It is. That’s why some people just use to their advantage. They also have misconception that somalis abroad are all rich. So those two things lead to unfortunate circumstances.

Those little diasporas are passing me off for real! Listen y'll, do you even know how you ended up abroad? And don't tell me "I was born there" cause even if it was your grandpa, there should be someone who has been sent there. The ones who were sent were sent to help out the families or even relatives back home and even there could be a possibility that they had a role on sending you abroad but here you're, pure disappointment, complaining about your relatives asking for help once they saw you! Please remember if they had as much as you have they wouldn't have remember you any ways!🤨

You are only considered diaspora if you were born outside Somalia. Not if you were born in Somalia and moved somewhere else. That’s still their homeland.
@mariamu12392 жыл бұрын
You sound bitter!!! There's nothing wrong in helping your family, but when they start making life hell for your mental well-being; that's where you draw the lines. So stop with this entitlement mentality!
@fartunmaalin62912 жыл бұрын
Here is the thing the people who currently live in Somalia are suffering and the ones who had to go away had to suffer leaving their country to go somewhere new. The diaspora don’t live in big houses and have flashy cars. They have to work for things. Both sides have their struggles. Some people tried to leave and others decided to stay behind. (Either because they couldn’t leave or SOME to milk off their family that move away.). And there is nothing wrong with supporting your family back home but the problem is they only see diaspora as rich kids when they lose kids don’t have much in the west. They make fun of them for not speaking their mother tongue when they grew up in a place where their mother tongue was not spoken and their parents encouraged them to speak the language of the country they are in. It is true some diaspora are stuck up and don’t know their culture. And some non diaspora are treating their families as nothing but stupid banks. I as a somali who was born in Kenya and left understand both sides.
