I think it's to show a parallel of how she got revenge on her attacker. She never forgave the dog for attacking her at the start of the movie and ruining her dress. So she pretended to be nice to the dog in order to befriend the dog. Once the dog trusted her, she used that to her advantage and poisoned him. Just like she did with the man who hurt her. She pretended to be nice and caring, but was actually deceitful, and struck once their guard was down.
