I bought the exact same model a few months ago and have really enjoyed wearing it. Super comfortable and I actually love the dial while busy, its informative. But I understand that it just isn't for everyone. Really great review and I love how you pointed out some of the concerns people may have and discussed your thoughts on them. They are legit issues for some, but for those that dont think they are too much of a problem (I actually find them to be positive features-except for the butterfly clasp) you will get one heck of a nice timepiece that can be enjoyed in many situations.

Thank. You. Thank you! For being one of the few content providers in this watch biz to actually describe and demo GMT as GMT/zulu. Not "local time, home time" or whatever diluted nonsense they're coming up with today. Sorry... personal pet peeve as a career pilot.

This is a watch that hits far above its weight - it's an outstanding value. I'll note that the AR coating on the crystal is very good. I also have the SST (recent production) and while it's a great looking historic watch, there does not appear to be any AR coating on that one and it's a point of annoyance. I have the Purist and I find it makes more sense - 24hr sweep and 24hr dials. Great review with comments that I mostly agree with. Thanks!

I am an airline pilot on Boeing 777. I got in an offer on Amazon and I got 2 Airman base 22, one with steel bracelet and black to blue dial (top is darker as night time and bottom is lighter blue as day). And I got a white dial as well with brown leather strap. Is a really good watch for the price, very comfortable on the wrist and, as is thin, you not even feel and you are not going to smash somewhere in the cockpit while working. And for these reasons I prefer at the Rolex GMT master II, because is heavy and while traveling it attracts too much attention, especially if you are in non safe places. I love also because it has an history behind, it has its own personality and is not another GMT that looks like the Rolex one.

I too have an Airman Base 22 Purist (not the GMT as I rarely need to keep track of 3 time zones :-)), everything you say about it resonates with my feelings exactly. It does take a while to come to terms with the 24 hour dial but all good things are worth a little trouble. When I travel abroad It's the only watch I need, Very good review, thank you.

For travellers, there is also the GA version of the base 22: the arrow hand will be the one you can adjust without changing the minute hand, and the red hour hand will be showing the home time zone. This has proven much more useful for me.

One thing I love about the older version is the hour hand. It doesn't apply to the GMT, but more the Purist model when it's a 24 hour hand. The counter balance is another small point that in the afternoon will point to the hour in a 12 hour scale. Helps if your not used to a 24 hour hand.

Love the video! I've mentioned previously that I'm a sucker for the GMT function, and I find myself more and more interested in different ways to present this function. For example, I have a Meistersinger GMT that I love. Not that a 24 hour presentation is completely "different", and I know there is a learning curve, but I think I'm up to the extra effort to learn how to read the dial! Although, I have to say, it's not a deal breaker, and I have no reason to believe it will affect the quality of the watches or how the watches are marketed, but I have to be honest, Glycine being purchased by Invicta gives me a slight pause. As always, thanks for the great video. Keep up the good work!

I think I'd go for the purist version. I like the simplicity of the 24 hour main hand and just using the bezel to track a second timezone. If they replaced the minute track with a 12 hour track on the GMT version I think I'd be more drawn to it, but a 12 hour main hand with only 24 hour markings just seems confusing.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 жыл бұрын
I've been going back and forth on if I had to buy another, which would I get. Honestly I'm not sure. I like that they give you the option, but too many options also confuses some people. Some people love the Double 12 model. It's not a GMT, but just a regular 12 hour watch, with a 12 hour bezel. Yet also shares the look of the classic airman. I was also thinking about your Nighthawk. Still have to get one some day. Can you adjust the 24 hour hand independently?
@JusttheWatch
@JusttheWatch 5 жыл бұрын
@@RelativeTime yeah, the main 12 hour hand can be adjusted separately and jumps by the hour so it stays in sync with the minutes on the 24 gmt hand. I really love how they did the half moon dial markings and double sided gmt hand, it's really easy to read and really cool looking at the same time. I'm hoping to do a sort of re-review of it this month or next.

Relative Time It’s not common, they only made 300. It’s a 4-hand, 3-crown, 2- rotating bezels (1 inner, 1 outer), with 4 time zones. It has a purist, 24 hr complication. Most people hate the busy dial and 24hr movement, but I really like it. I’ve even offered a finders fee to anyone who can steer me to one for sale a a fair price and I’ll offer better than fair, if it’s nice. I’ll try to attach a pic, but not sure it will work. I grabbed when I had a chance Airman GL0066 from authorized dealer in EU for about $500, for some reason. Tho the basic price around here is $1100-1800. I really wanted it, yet still thought maybe I can sell it for double the price. The moment I got it on my wrist, I was sure I'm keeping it. Triple time zone, vintage inspired, yet modern design, one of my favorite watches.

Thanks for this review and your perspective on it. I love the Airman series.. mainly these types. I don't care for the SST or any chronograph versions. I've owned 4 Airmans. I started with the more modern Airman 42 purist. Then a dc-4. Then an airman 18 purist. Then most recently The Chief GL0251 Purist. It is probably my mist favorite watch I currently own. It is amazingly consistently accurate, too. It averages about +/-1 sec per day. I started it up, set and synced the time two Thursdays ago, and on this Saturday morning as I am writing, it is only +2 seconds. The version I have is very similar to your base 22, only smaller at 40mm. But, mine does not have sapphire, only 10m wr and it is purist version. Still, despite it seemingly lack luster specs in comparison to other watches i own, it is still my favorite watch. I think the base 22 is a more modern version of my chief with the better wr, sapphire crystal, and larger 42mm case... with some color and other cosmetic changes. It mixes vintage cues with a more modern build. As you eluded to, it is combination of brand history, style and design, and how well it fits, feels and looks when wearing it. I don't mind the 24-hour movement. I have plenty of standard 12-hour watches. It is refreshing to read and conceptualize the time in a different way. I love the double crown design and placement, too. It reminds me of ww2 "weems" pilot watches as seen in vintage omega ck2129 and similar jlc watches. If you've watched Dunkirk, you will know the watch I am referring to worn by Tom Hardy"s British Spitfire pilot character. I think some people needless worry or downplay Glycine because Invicta purchased it not too long ago. It has no effect on production or the quality. They are still made at glycine in switzerland the same as they always have been. If anything, this situation allows glycine to get some good funding to continue making their great watches and I believe likely to affect pricing so that they can be sold less expensive than they would be before the Invicta association. I would highly recommend one to anyone who wants an original design that is uniquely Glycine with true brand heritage and doesn't want just another gmt master homage nor want or can't pay crazy high prices for an actual gmt master.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 жыл бұрын
That's one of the things I love about it. That almost every other GMT is based off the GMT master, and this is something different. WIth just as much history as the rolex. I actually had a short section of the video talking about it, but edited it out to keep the time down. I love the look of "The Chief". I didn't realize it only had 10m water resistance. Not sure why they did that. Otherwise, love the dial and blue hands.

Very nice review as always. I purchased the dc-4 model a year ago. I really like the quality, comfort and history of the watch. But because of the number of watches in my rotation I can't seem to adjust to the 24 hour dial, same problem with a 24 hour vostok that I have. I sometimes feel like flipping it but I don't for some reason. I think I am attached to it because I am a Vietnam era vet and it was so popular with the military pilots........

I've got the Base22 GMT w/ the flat black dial. My only criticism of the design is that the smaller lumed dots (24hr indices) are pointless because the 24hr GMT hand itself isn't lumed. Great review. I have an Airman 42, the Black PVD Case with the Full Lume Dial and GMT. I really like it. It also comes on a pretty nice NATO strap. The Airman 42 is only 100m WR, as opposed to the Base 22’s 200m. It’s definitely not a diver so it should be fine for most. The base 22 does not have lume on the GMT hand while all the currant models do, kind of important on A GMT. Another thing, Glycine should not of changed there logo. The older crown is much nicer than the currant one. I have heard it called a cross between there original crown and Invicta’s Logo. As most probably know Invicta now owns Glycine. A Really like the models Glycine puts out, and the logo is not a deal breaker. The Combat Sub is a great watch, especially since they are usually available for under $500 US. You get a Swiss Made 200m Diver with Sapphire and a high beat movement. A good alternive to the Steinheart Ocean One 42, especially if you want something more unique. It’s not perfect. It has so-so lume and a 60-click Bezel with only an aluminum insert. More pluses, it’s very thin and has great crown action. Glycine also makes a field watch that gets very little coverage, the Combat 6. I was able to get a Combat 6 Vintage for less then $400, also Swiss Made with Sapphire crystal and a high beat movement. Glycine just came out with some special edition Airman models. They look really nice but only have 1atm (10m) wr. So basically splash-proof. Don’t understand that at all.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out. I thought the 42 was almost identical, but guess not. Wonder why they dropped the water resistance. Does it still have a screw down crown? I thought you were joking about the 1 atm... but holy crap your right. A couple of the vintage models I showed only have 1atm. I know they are trying to be true to some originals models, but that's ridiculously stupid.

Relative Time the Airman 42 still has a screwdown crown. I do not know why they went to 100m wr, since it’s not a diver 100m should be fine. I imagine those new limited editions are trying be as close to the vintage models as possible, but 1 atm wr is ridiculous. For that I would never buy it.

Relative Time i like it a lot . I would say a very solid 8 out of 10 and a good buy under a $100. But they did not do a better than the 3GMT. Shortcoming on the crown and pusher. The pusher is not very tactile at all a small for the case. From the design point of view, outstanding.

Interesting and informative as ever, thank you. Alas, the dial design places me in the uncomfortable and unfamiliar position of having to concede a point to Rolex ... let's just say I'm glad you like the watch, Shane - and rather you than me. The newer version does look like a considerable improvement.

Looking at a lot of the other GMTs out there. Seem most follow rolex and keep a standard looking dial. Then some follow that up with a small 24 hour scale on the chapter ring. Something smal then doesn't distract. Probably works better for most people.
@kaisoerfjord6794
@kaisoerfjord6794 5 жыл бұрын
The 24 -hour scale NUMBERS on the INNER bezel disturb the reading of 12 -hour time along that inner bezel. THAT’S WHY you should have the hour-hand mounted on its 24 -hour gear and toss the gmt-hand aside. I did.

Good review as usual. As far as Glycine watches are concerned, I have been looking at the Incursore line. I have wanted to add a California dial to my collection, and like the Panerai look, but their prices are not in my budget. The Incursore looks like a possible alternative.

@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. Glycine isn't as popular as a lot of other brands. So I've never heard of counterfeit Glycine watches, but that doesn't mean they aren't around. You should ask them, but I'm guessing that just means they are considered a Grey Market dealer. So no paperwork, may means no warranty, just as with most Grey Market Sellers. I'm pretty sure Drop.com where I got this one is Grey Market, just as Joomashop and Ashford. Basically you wind up trading that warranty for a pretty good discount. So just up to you on what you value more.

Unfortunately this version has been phased out for a newer one, the Airman 42. The newer one is mostly a cosmetic change, so most of what I say here should still apply. Although if you really like this version, your best bet would be to check out eBay. Or check out some of the "Vintage models" that Glycine sells. @@johnbradley8757 Hard to say as watch prices can be volatile. Usually what I try to do is go on Ebay, then search for the model I'm interested in. On the left side of the screen, usually at the bottom, there should be a button for "Sold Items". Which shows you what people have been paying recently for them. Right now it looks like the prices are up a bit, from $750 to $1000. Which to me still seems a little high, but a lot of stuff seems higher these days too.

@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 4 жыл бұрын
I've ordered one thing from there, and didn't have a problem. Joma shop is considered a grey-market dealer. Which sounds ominous, but it's not. So are most online dealers. Typically with authorized dealers they sign an agreement which restricts the price they can sell the watch at. Grey Market isn't beholden to that. So they can lower the price to whatever they want. The Downside is that there is an issue the brand often won't honor the warranty. So there is a slight risk. Although most warranty are only a few years, and I think Joma shop has their own warranty program. I've never had to use it, so I can't say how good it is.
