A Golf Course Between Its Runways: Bangkok Don Mueang International

Many airports have unusual or unique features. Don Mueang International in Bangkok certainly stands out as being the only airport to have a full golf course between its runways. This has been in place since the 1950s. The airport has changed a lot since then. Once the main hub for Thailand, the facility now mainly serves budget airlines. However, the golf course remains the same. Let’s look at this oddity in today’s video.

Very cool. I didn't know about this airport. I'm not much of a golfer, but that would clearly be my fav golf course on the planet...along with the course at Honolulu's main airport.

most US Air Force bases have golf courses near active runways and taxiways.. so you get used to the jet noise... I loves playing Randolph AFB... always got yelled at "LET"S GO" cause I was usually watching the planes !!

For the Canadians out there, YWG (Winnipeg) has a golf course belonging to the Base off the end of runway 36. I’ve played it a few times and whenever I’ve been there with some pilot colleagues, all play stops as an aircraft is shooting the approach, while everyone critiques the pilot’s technique and landing skills. It certainly slows down play, but nobody really minds. Several other RCAF Bases have courses close to the field.

I've been there for so many times as I live in bangkok myself, I genuinely always thought all majors airports have it because it is the only 2 runwayed airport I've been to since u normally fly domestic

Played there many times, pretty flat but well groomed & caddies are friendly. If the winds are right, Thana City course showcases the big boys going over the top as well. Just at the end (or beginning)of Suvarnabhumi's strips

Suvarnabhumi Airport. Even though BKK airport is written SUVARNABHUMI. It's pronounced SU-WAN-NA- POOM สุวรรณภูมิ . Meaning GOLDEN LAND.

I have been to that airport many times on my way to Vietnam, I always wondered how people got on that golf course when I landed there. sadly i never went there to play golf, just transiting in and out of there. I haven't been there in years though as I normally fly via Qatar, Taiwan, Hong Kong or Singapore now. I bet its the best golf course to go to as you can sport planes and play at the same time. But i wonder what would happen if you accidentally hit the ball too hard and it ends up through an aircraft window, hits the plane or goes on the runway?

I had some time to kill at Don Mueang in 2019. On the second floor of the older terminal building there is a large open air viewing area. It is sparsely furnished with few visitors. It was a great place relax with some plane spotting.

Prime planespotting location. If I have the opportunity to go there, it won't be for the golf. Good thing there's the red light system to halt golfing activities when there are takeoffs and landing, but if anyone can access the airside due to the lack of a perimeter fence, that sounds like a security breach incident just waiting to happen...

Although I reckon if you tried to go the edge of the course to photograph your rotation / landing photo, any security that sees you won’t be so pleased…….,

It will stay. Airlines accept those risks when they fly to that airport. The Airport Authority of Thailand may run the airport, but the golf course is owned and run by the Air Force. No airlines will publicly say a golf ball damaged their aircraft. It'd be the airline that'd get kicked out of the airport, not the golf course. Welcome to Thailand.

I lived in Bangkok during the 2000s for 10 years and saw the opening of Subhanabhumi airport and the re-purposing of Don Meuang to a domestic hub. I’ve played golf here about 3 or 4 times. It was a thrilling experience when a 747 landed just a few feet over your head. I enjoyed the video (though not your pronunciation of the two airport names). Perhaps next time you feature a ‘foreign’ airport you could do some research about how it is pronounced. There was concern when the new airport opened that non-Thais would mangle the pron. and it should have been named something less difficult. Apparently, BIA was considered for Bangkok International Airport but rejected as Colombo, nearby Sri Lanka’s capital, has Bandaranaike International Airport also known as BIA. Back in the UK now and my local airport is Leeds Bradford - sadly no golf course between runways.
