I've read many of the author's stories in my life but had been saving this one was a treat. I live about 25 miles from Andalusia, the author's family home and I live 10 miles outside of Toomsboro, Ga. I've driven down almost every dirt road between home and Toomsboro in rural Wilkinaon County but now I will see this story in my mind's every time I do! Thank you for an excellent reading of one of Ms O'Connor's best known stories. If you're ever in Millledgeville, GA pay a visit to her home, her resting place and to Toomsboro!

My favorite of hers. So many themes woven together. She demonstrates how to create regional characters without resorting to broad awkward dialogue.

Glad you liked it; a tough story to read but a great one

God, the creeping sense of horror that comes over you as the story unfolds! If there IS a moral to that tale it's surely that keeping company with fools is as dangerous as keeping company with criminals.

What a horrific story and the more compelling by the easy going tone of your rendition of it. A foreshadowing of the encounter to come by the newspaper article. Strange sometimes our own actions precipitate our demise. Words are more harmful that a sword.

A chilling tale- starts as a nostalgic family roadtrip that lulls you into a pleasant contentment before exploding its grisly climax

Thinking about this story in the dead of the night...this one was truly horrifying! It's easier if the bad guys are ghosts, because they're not real (in my opinion). The type of monsters in this story are all too real.

That was absolutely horrible.

Found the title of this story on a list of "most disturbing stories" rarely have I been this disappointed in such a short time.

Fair enough. I think the realism and casual brutality disturb many people, but there is a deep pessimism about people that I think makes it stick with you for a while.

@@WindyNightStories oh I have nothing but pessimism left for my fellow man. I hate the human race, but to each their own, I just don't doubt at all, I could write a better story.
