It maws, it kills, it makes me lose weight, it keeps me in tip-top shape, it serves as that special extra for my Halloween outfit, and it keeps me and my family closer together. What a great tool!

Yeah and if you need to get rid of some undesirable person, all you have to do is dress accordingly with the right costume and use your scythe.

I still have a few of my Dads Scythe's. . .unfortunately they just hang as relics in the machinery shed now. . . They haven't been used since the 1930s. . .He replaced his team of horses and hand tools with a JD model B and No. 5 Sickle mower in 1937. I can remember him hammering/peening the blade with a special stand and hammer he carried around with him in the field. I can still remember the sound. Great video, you brought back a lot of memories for me.

I used to mown huge amounts of grass with this tool when I was a teenager at my granddad's farm...it's worth noticing that scythes have to be sharpened regularly and their blade has to be reset with a help of a hammer too. They are also very sharp and any mishandling could lead to a serious injury, so the person using it must be very thorough

I am so glad to see this! Ever since I read the book, The Scythe Book from our library, I have wanted to get one, but didn't think husband would go along with it. I think when he sees this he will want one. He is getting right under those logs and farm equipment! And, what? He's barefooted with that sharp blade! Yet, with control over the blade, he's safe apparently. Thanks! I'm going to go watch all your other scythe videos.

This video is absolutely fascinating. I've never actually seen one used in practice. I am amazed at how fluid and smooth it works even on the nearly shoulder length grass and brush. Very... /very/ neat video, thank you for uploading!

Dear God! If the comments on this page are any indication of the intelligence of the world these days, we are all in trouble. If it's not a comment trying to be funny in a pathetic plea for attention, it's a demeaning or judgemental one on life choices or farm equip.placement. I found it informative and it answered the question that Google got me here with. Grow up haters! These people are experts at a dying art!

You are sooooooooo right. I too particularly disdain the "comment trying to be funny in a pathetic plea for attention". They are EVERYWHERE on KZbin. The problem is, is that such thrash distracts from the topic at hand. In this case, it is actually a really important one environmentally, not to mind enjoyable, incredibly economical, inexpensive and gets you outside and moving around and exercising.

If you’ve ever used a scythe you would know what back breaking work it is. I must admit that it’s good to see young children learn the old way.
@WildernessTamed
@WildernessTamed 6 жыл бұрын
its only back breaking if you haven't set up the scythe properly to suit yourself, if you haven't been properly trained and if the blade is blunt.

@josh67220 The Grim Reaper first appeared in the middle ages during the plagues. There were pictures of men standing like wheat in a field, and he mowed them down like sheaves of wheat. So I guess the skeletal "reaper" was really the black death or something, rather than just any kind of random death, when it was first invented.

Blades and bare feet. The blade is in front of the mower at all times. Country etiquette is when the mowers would stop to eat, if doing communal harvesting, the scythes would be laid in the unmowed crops, and it was a given not to be fooling around in that area, as to get hurt. You never laid a scythe down where you have already mowed.

We use a cross between a sickle and scythe where I come from, called a "sundang". Looks like the scythe would have been a better tool, less back-breaking. You'll have a few inches head start if you end up uncovering a snake too.

Yeah reminds me of i movie i saw some time ago. I think it was about a french soldier leaving his newfound gf/wife for war and ending up in jail. The guy is shown clubbing the shit out of a patch pf grass with a scythe like he playing golf. (It didnt work great but apparently was supposed to be his job)

I notice that the scythe does not have to move fast, nor with much force, in order to cut effectively. I have to re-tool my approach to this.

Yes, I found I was under sharpening my scythe. Even though it was 'sharp' and 'worked', after reading some material on blade sharpening, I found that 'sharp' really isn't sharp. I jig peened and stoned the blade to the point I could push receipt paper across the blade and slice it, and at that point the blade severs the grass with almost no momentum at all. The duller the blade, the user tends to compensate with a more energetic swing.
@martialme84
@martialme84 6 жыл бұрын
Uh-oh! After reading how goddamn sharp you make your scythe..... seVERELY undersharpened scythe RIGHT here!! Will have to buy a peening jig. Up until now, my scythe was pretty sharp when compared to a sharp knife, but no way NEAR as sharp as you describe! Jesus...

@maxdecphoenix
@maxdecphoenix 6 жыл бұрын
martialme84 no, you don't want a jig, you need a peening anvil and hammer (if you have a European-style scythe). The work required to use a jig to get anything approaching a usable blade for grasses with a jig unnecessarily high. I just used that as a means to convey the story to explain how sharp sharp must be. The anvil is actually much faster and produces a superior result in a fraction of the time. Sorry for the confusion.

@hellzanetruesdale - How safe? You mean as opposed to a rotary lawn mower? Any idea how many emergency room visits each year from both push & riding mowers each year??? Or a string trimmer? It's pretty difficult to hurt yourself with a scythe as the stances and motions never put a body part in the path of the blade.
