I love microclimates! I have a carrie mango, that's thriving in zone 8-9 due to a very nice microclimate. :D

Shamus, have you ever considered attempting to grow different common varieties of cocos nucifera? I bet if you can build up a 9b microclimate you would only need to protect them during those short cold spells. During the day the temps would go right back up and if they are facing south, they would get the necessary heat needed.

thanks! i love the tips as i have few tropical varieties myself but if anyone could help with my question.. that is, that i have a few carnivorous plants and ive heard that some could* take the low temps, even light frost to a degree, as long as not in consecutive days.. i guess really my question would be if they can overwinter and survive, how would you increase the humidity during those temps.. ? is the air naturally going to stay humid during those times.. ? sorry this a question out of my own mini realm of horticulture.. thanks in advance! to anyone who could help:) peace! ✌

I am working on trying to create a food forest and garden. I really want a micro climate and wood chips. I need to know were to get wood chips. I have signed up for a chip drop but I must live too far out of town because I have not received any.

Call local tree companies and talk to them directly. It was the only was I was able to get them and I ended up finally having to call them off because I had more than I could handle.

yeah, when you initially plant them they need to be babied for the first year.

It needs enough density to trap the heat and humidity. It will need less protection once it's fully forrested.
