When I was younger, we lived in Scotland my mom would collect wildflower seed packets all year long and when the weather started to change to spring, we would open all the packets and she’d give us little empty soup cans full of seeds and send us out on the property to take little handful and throw them up in the air in the fields. Every spring, my uncle has the property now, and he still doing this with his grandkids now

Hello to both of you, just catching up with your latest videos. Ah don’t worry about the vegetables. You’re doing really well. We live in West Wales and have a very difficult climate to grow some vegetables. Can be very wet and cold in Summer too where we are. We have learnt what grows and what doesn’t over the years but also have a few poly tunnels and the veg we now grow does well. Only potatoes, rhubarb and raspberries outside. Good luck and love your channel. X

Thank you for another great vlog Katie and Scott. The wild flowers are starting to look so beautiful, the Bracken would drive me crazy though. I am with you Scott, prefer my feet on the ground. I know you can most probably Kayak to some nice places but I am not a strong swimmer and would hate to fall in. Aww Katie, really felt for you with your veg patch. The weather up here has certainly been a challenge, one day really glorious and now so cold again. ❤ Xx

It is the salt in the air and the cold winds. Also the moist and a lot of rain. I live down at the south coast of South Africa, and I have lost a lot of roses, veggies, etc. because of the winds and the salt in the air... we are also close to the beach. Build a large green house.

The Island is bursting with lively beauty in late spring/early summer! The shiny shower water heater is sure to inspire later work in the bathroom. Good that the canoes are the broad flat ones for first time rowing. Katie will get the what where when who and why for the garden right while working this new environment.

Plants being moved from indoors to outside need to go through a “hardening-off” process where they are gradually introduced to the change by slowly increasing the number of hours of exposure. Moving from a shady cool kitchen to full hot sun in one day is a death sentence for young plants. Even if they survive the first few weeks, they will not be good producers.

i live in one of the hottest places in the US. Our spring lasts but a blink, and out summer stays well beyond its welcome. Add to that we have rats/mice and rabbits. We took conduit (not sure if you guys call it the same - but its hollow metal tubing that wire is ran through). We built a frame with it around our veg patch. In the summer we wrapped it in solar screening and had a misting and auto watering system. We used clamps to hold it on. In winter we used plastic on a roll and the clamps to hold it on. On nights we were worried about frost, we burned a small propane camping stove inside. As winter turned to spring i would lower the plastic half way down on the sides during the day, and back up at end of day to extend the warmth. It last us many years and the sun here is very harsh. We seldom have clouds so it is direct sun in the warmer months. Some plastics turns brittle here in 1 summer season. Hope this gives you some ideas until you can build a greenhouse. Keep gardening!

We are in Alaska. Lots of temperature fluctuations and possible frost all summer. I have hoops over all my garden beds and can put plastic over individual beds as needed for warm loving crops. Some summers the plastic hardly ever comes off! I actually use them in the early season too to warm up beds I want to plant and to help as I harden off plants.

Those tomatoes are an indeterminant variety. The first leaves always go brown/yellow. The SECONDARY growth is appearing already that is when you prune the First growth. Continue to do that through the life of the plant as it gains height, could be over six feet ! You would be better off with a determinant variety.

I feel for Scott not sure if you can swim. Being in deep water on a kayak can be very frightening . Iam Australian and I can swim in pools and ocean. I did once join a rowing club and we went out on a deep body of water and I became very anxious and never did again. Don’t be hard on yourself Scott I would not like kayaking in deep water. You need lessons about balance, what happens if you fall out and roll over. Good on you to decide not for you. Water safety is so so important. I also think your fish is very high being in what seems changing tides and open sea. Me. No no no kayaking without considerable experience.

it’s so very frustrating when your plants don’t thrive. You have my sympathy. Suddenly stressed plants, whether due to wild temperature swings, as you noted, or not yet being fully accustomed to full light and wind are my guesses. Stressed plants will pick up all sorts of foliar diseases. Hang in there.

Could be your water pressure isn't enough for the shower to operate correctly, this is a safety feature to prevent scalding, the pressure has to be consistent for the temperature to be stable.

But, to live on the island, and get the most out of it, you will need to overcome these concerns because island life is all about being in harmony with the sea and using it as a means of getting about. So kayaking doesn't fit the bill, it wasn't a good idea in the first place. And there are plenty of other ways for you to get about. To start with you should consider dressing more practically. You will live a lot longer that way. Oh, and forget the expensive camera for these expeditions, as a simple head or chest mounted GoPro will suffice. Best of luck. Love your vlogs. Cheers.

Lots of people are using greenhouses these days. Because of the ozone weakening and the magnetic field weakening the radiation from the UV rays Because we are in a grand solar maximum. Then they are using raised beds at least 17 inches off of the ground Because of gamma rays coming up from the earth also because the earths magnetic field weakening. They predict the grand solar maximum will be in force until at least 2026. But the earths magnetic field will continue to get weaker. The earth is preparing to do a magnetic pole reversal. I have a 20x32 greenhouse that I need to get put up. But I have been using a 16x16 greenhouse that i made out of cattle panels several years ago. I built a frame in the middle to hold it up made from 4x4 inch wood posts. It has withstood many stong storms and it is still strong. I bought greenhouse plastic on Amazon. Also lots of people here in the southeast in the United States use 40 percent shade cloth (black works best) to guard further against the UV rays. Lots of big farmers are having a hard time growing this year. But small market farmers use greenhouses. I know some that have 24x60 foot greenhouses. Some have 2, 3, or 4. I know farmers in many states here in the United States. It's becoming a challenge.

You could add some tall hoops and then some clear 4mil poly on top to create a makeshift greenhouse. Hoop houses or poly tunnels are very common. You can probably come up with a design that you can add onto the frame you've already got. Another tip, use clean gallon jugs filled with water and put them all around the plants. They will absorb heat during the day and give it off at night to keep the plants a bit warmer. I have used this plus a makeshift cold frame (just plastic clipped to tomato cages) for years and years with tomatoes and it works a treat. Good luck!

There were some interesting inhabitants of your island before you two.....fabulous gardeners and folks who thought impaling deer skulls on trees was good decorating...It looks much better as a hood ornament. Ah, a HOT shower - one of the hallmarks of civilization! Gardening is fraught with unexplained mysteries, isn't it? This year, all the roses in my yard, tame and wild, got this horrible leaf curling thing. And a few of the other kinds of bushes had one or two affected leaves. Later, a few new healthy leaves appeared on the affected bushes, but it's obviously not going to be a good year for roses. I've never seen anything like it.....Anyone out there know what this is? Best of luck to you, Katie, in your new micro-climate. You'll get it sorted.

Awe, I’m gutted your veg are suffering Katie. When you put the effort in you look for something back. You need to get that greenhouse! Don’t put it off! I can’t wait to see the wool you get from your wee sheep but not at their expense, if they need their coats then they need their coats❤

I love your 'True Grit'! If at first we do not succeed...try, try again! The weather really has not been kind to plants this year. Good luck with your next batch. I noticed the grass seeds have come up well.

I just think Scott your of an age where exercise is not Fun to you. It’s a shame cos you can see such lovely wildlife on water. But I get it I used to Cycle All the time now I hate it. But I love walking. It’s worth watching Ariel and Eric on simple living Alaska. They have similar issues regarding temps and plants. I love watching their gardening videos. They manage to get a good crop but they have to do things a certain way.

I have no problem with exercise. I'll climb and walk until my legs drop off. But anything related to water and the sea just does not appeal. I'm a woodsman. I love climbing hills and walking through meadows. I adore looking at the sea and feeling it's power on a stormy day. But I have zero desire to be on it, or in it. Being here has just confirmed where my passions lie, and they are not on water.
