The work hours we have as interns and residents are insanely inhumane. I have had 72 hours shifts without sleep, food and shower. When we demand a free hour at least to go home and eat something, the professors joke that we are called residents because the hospital is our residence. And this is a job where there is no room for error. At all. We don’t have the privilege to make a mistake in treating a patient and then say that we were sleep deprived and hungry for 3 days. We have to be as attentive and perfect on the night of day 3 as we were on the morning of day 1. And then comes the thanklessness. As if we are the ones being negligent. After more than 8 years of slogging our guts in rooms without fans in a hot weather, being on our feet all day long, never having a proper meal for days and just surviving on coffee and biscuits at times, and barely catching short Naps on broken govt hospital benches with nails jutting out, when we are attacked and assaulted and not respected at all, it just seems worthless. The patient load in govt colleges is ridiculous. No wonder we have to work long shifts because the work never seems to end. And the only solution is an increase in the number of seats and colleges and thereby doctors. The patient load is never going to reduce. We badly need more hands working. And with this kind of nonsense on top of all this, there will be a time when no one will want to become a doctor in this country. Either they’ll switch professions, or the country altogether.

You have given the correct picture of the situation. They forget that we are humans and need to replenish ourselves to serve with dedication, accountability, c precision, compassion and love to deliver quality care. When we are deprived of basic requirements of food and rest, how can a human function. We are still the stone Age in spite of all development everywhere. The our elected leaders are keeping themselves busy in doing research on how to amass wealth in the quickest time to sustain their next 100 generations, we will be always ignored. It's time for our people to rise up and stop the atrocities to humanity and more importantly to those who sacrifice their lives to serve others. God bless our land and our people for a better future for our children. 🙏

Biased journalist. Media is terrible. Even independent journalists will align to their political ideologies no matter how inhuman the crime is. Horrible behavior. She didn't say anything about Kolkata police forcing the girl's parents to burn the body within a day or two, hiding evidence, and the state govt allowing the hospital administration to carry out renovation in order to tamper with evidence. Even worse, the principal of RG Kar resigned and was appointed as the Principle of Calcutta National Medical College within 4 hours by the state government. Will she talk about this? No. Because it doesn't align with her political ideologies.

There is no adequate safety or dedicated restrooms for doctors on emergency duties. I still remember directly drunk relatives of patients banging on doors of the big lab at odd hours asking for reports which they were not supposed to do and we used to sit inside locking the doors for our safety , processing samples in midnight. Used to be very stressful and scary. Corruption in government hospital is so common and male gaze of authorities is real. If you can't feel safe in your own working environment, what's the point

Whatever is worse is that the Police initially called it a suicide without any investigations!! The corpse was cremated as early as possible to hide evidence perhaps. The Principal blamed the victim shamelessly and now forced to resign but immediately got into another Med college - NMC(due to his close political connections with ruling TMC party) where the students made a grand welcome with shoes😂 It is perhaps due to this, that the state is trying to protect him. All the real culprits must be punished including the principal. The police commissioner shall be tried to the court of law on why he said it a suicide!!! Destruction of evidence is also a crime. Even Mamata Banerjee must be answerable as the health & family planning minister.

At least in one hospital I have seen that they are entitled for one day weekly off plus 19 days yearly leave according to their appointment letter.. But never nowhere they get any, repeat, any leave or off. There is no getting away from the fact that some kind of ragging mentality of the seniors is very much present in most of the places beside all the truths stated and commented.

Junior doctors and residents are not managed well anywhere in India…. It’s all because management hires a senior consultant who speaks the language of administration and keeps treating junior doctors like clerks …. Look at their salaries …. Best is medical Council too doesn’t do anything …. Central and state both government give deaf ear , rather the doctors and hospitals in India are the soft targets … One of the Noblest of profession is going to the dogs and hello it’s in every corner of India… Kafeel Khan in UP was targeted for being a good doctor… We Doctors lack unity … Politicians and Society only believes in blaming and trying to establish alternative medicine which will have dire consequences May God bless the departed soul and give strength to the family to accept the same

0:10 Is capital punishment way forward without appeal the solution and deterrent, as Nirbhaya and the 40 + year old case of 1980s of brutalising of Aruna Shanbag, that left her inanimate dead. She was cared so well by her colleagues though she was brain dead. Capital punishment with a large bench on fast track, without further appeals may become life beacons of hope for helpless hardworking staff, doctors and perhaps ensure safety as the deterrent is death within time specified by judiciary and Govt. 0:10

This is not about doctors getting raped. It's s systemic problem of our society. Towards how it views and treats women. There are countless incidences in the recent past when sexual offenders were protected by the police and the government because of their political affiliation. Unless this is addressed, these incidents will keep happening. Selective outrage will not help here.

It is also important to stop this constant hospital hopping by senior doctors . Many senior government doctors do private visits and surgeries in private hospitals during duty hours. When the patient family gets angry due to their absence ( because junior doctors often don't have patient related decision making authority), they attack the junior doctors present there instead of the senior doctors who are busy making money elsewhere..

Dear Faye, I appreciate your efforts to balance truth with wrath of erring governments, while simultaneously invoking our conscience on something that happened to somebody else's child. Difficult task. But merely accepting that it is wrong, and using scathing words doesn't solve the issue. There is a large population, and there are many issues. This makes it easy to shift to the next issue, and this one goes into back burner. Dear girl, if you can ask for suggestions, we can all come up with some. I agree that some of our suggestions will not meet your approval, and often seem midieval. Nevertheless, if the majority agrees to it, we may have to adopt it and can twist the arms of government, even after elections. Perhaps it can be fine tuned by others. As things stand, governments seem short of workable solutions. Some can be tried, and if successful, made permanent. If not, discard the section. Haven't we changed something like 498A before attending to Juvenile crimes? Please come up with a video calling for suggestions to stop such crimes. Who knows we might hit the bull's eye.
