In today's video, Damien shows a way of killing woodworm in already built furniture using his kiln. Due to the size of his kiln, he can put in multiple large dining tables, bookshelves, chairs, benches, etc. He has also tested this method on pieces of furniture that have been treated differently (ie. varnish, oil, lacquer, resin).

Very useful advice for all those millions of KZbin viewers who have an abnormally large timber kiln handy which you can just pop wardrobes and tables into when you need to.

sycamore is very sugary which is probably why woodworm like it so much, which is also why it rots so quickly as the fungus loves it too! thank you for sharing your knowledge and the tables are beautiful.

This is very useful information. A lot more eco-friendly and non toxic. By the way for those of us across the pond. 70 degrees C equals 158 degrees F.

Thanks for the comment. I'm glad to hear that people from all over are finding this information helpful, or at the very least just interesting.

Great video brother! I reataurate the old wooden barrels made from oak wood. I usually have a problem with woodworms (they love oak so much). I used primer pesticides (but those for prevention, not for killing) and i am wrapping the boards in the tape, leaving it 24h in order to replace O2 with toxic gases. Sometimes I am afraid that I didn't do it well, so I repeat for 4 times, if the wood is thicker. May the oak wood crack on higher or lower temperatures? I am just afraid of that. I want to get rid of pesticides, for my own sake. I am only afraid that wood may crack when I change a temperature of the wood fastly. I have a large refrigerator, but I know that some warms are good at hibernation, and that they could survive the low temperatures.

I’ve seen people build a temporary kiln by building a fire and boxing it in with tin roofing. They use a oven thermometer and try to keep it around 175 for a few hours

Yes I suppose that would work as long as you can keep it hot for several hours. I'm personally thankfull I have the kiln as I can just turn it on and forget about it without having to monitor it all day. But it is obviously a lot quicker and cheaper to do what you suggested as long as you don't mind spending time monitoring it.

This is really helpful. I knew a joiner who had irreparably harmed his health using woodworm treatment on a daily basis. This is a great technique. I believe that you can also kill woodworm by freezing them.

I'm glad you liked the video. I can well believe people getting seriously ill from the woodworm treatment - it's horrible stuff. Yes, you can use the freezing method to kill them as well. Unfortunately, I don't have a big enough freezer to try it with a table. 🤣

I have some old barn beams that I would love to use inside for decoration. Any suggestions for me? I live in the alps so freezing outside could be an option, but I think it needs to be a very low temperature for a sustained period. I considered heating with a heated blanket but it’s probably not the best for fire safety and the temperature wouldn’t be high enough. The kiln looks great but sadly I don’t have one to hand.

I have a pergola built of 6 huge timber sleepers which has wood worm, each timber post weighs approx 500kg. I'm looking for a solution to kill any active woodworm without taking it down, some direction would be greatly appreciated. Love from the UK

Hi, sorry for the very late response. Incase you haven't found a solution yet ,here is my suggestion. Unfortunately you will need some chemical treatment (unless you have a way of heating up your garden to over 60 degrees centigrade for several hours without setting your garden on fire) so get some gloves and possibly a charcoal face mask and eye protection aswell and a large can of wet rot, dry rot and woodworm treatment aswell as a syringe. Make sure you have several days of good dry weather, then start injecting the woodworm holes with treatment using the syringe. Don't be stingy with the treatment and do as many as you can. Then afterwards apply the treatment to the rest of the wooden structure with a brush. I would repeat this process over the course of a few days. Just coating the outside will kill any bugs and their eggs that are close to the surface but won't go deep enough to get anything deeper than about 30mm into the wood that's where using the syringe in the worm holes will help get the deep ones. It might also help to wrap the timber in something like stretch wrap after applying the treatment as this would force the fumes deeper into the wood as it wouldn't be able to evaporated off normally and then take it off after a few days. If I recall the Everbuild triple action treatment was pretty good. It's going to smell while you are doing it and I definitely wouldn't do it without protective gear. Best of luck.

@@VisionlessDesigns Not at all late seeing as we have another short heatwave expected here in London. Your advise is greatly appreciated and more than likely will be undertaken by myself. I will be sure to let you know how it goes, thankyou ever so much for taking the time to help.

I still can't figure out if there's any way to treat the old milking stool I have. My hoped for solution several years ago was to wrap the legs in tape, but when I took it off the other day I found a pile of dust. Maybe I do have to find a toxic product after all?
@VisionlessDesigns

Out of curiosity was the stool made from fresh timber before you wraped it? I have personally found with woodworm once they are in they will keep laying eggs in the holes they make. So you need to make sure that there are no worms in the wood before doing anything to it as once they are in they are in. If you can find a way to get it up to 60-70 degrees Celsius for a couple of hours (depending on size of stool, could possibly put it in a decent sized electric oven) and then coat it in any oil/varnish you should be fine as woodworm find wood via smell.

@@VisionlessDesigns Actually saunas are usually at least 70 degrees C. Maybe that's an option.
