Pinaud Clubman is the actual Barbershop Fragrance that absolutely dominated in the American barbershops from the 1940s through the 1970s. When people referred to the barbershop fragrance, this was literally the fragrance they were talking about.

It’s amazing to me that “barbershop” scents are not mentioned on any of the top influencer channels, it’s mainly the typical Versace Eros/Spice Bomb/D&G, I bought Tom Ford Beau De Jour last week after testing it in the store, and I literally immediately put that in my top 3 of all time. Bought it on the spot. Expensive, but amazing. And I didn’t know why it isn’t being talked about more. Thank you for the video!

Pinaud Clubman is the quintessential barbershop fragrances. Pinaud was a highend French company back in the 1800s, and when they started selling fragrances in the U.S. they sold highend women's perfumes, but they also sold a line of fragrances to men inside of barbershops. Within a few years they dominated the barbershop market. In the 1940s they created Pinaud Clubman that was sold in barbershops, and once again it absolutely dominated. When people talked about the barbershop smell, _THIS_ was literally the fragrances they were talking about, and it continued to be the main fougere in barbershops for the next 30 or 40 years. It was an "aftershave" but it was (and still is) very strong. The stuff costs about $10 a bottle, so if you want to know what the original barbershop fougere smelled like then there is no excuse for not getting this fragrances. This is how Private Investigators like J.J. "Jake" Gittes, Paul Drake, Peter Gunn, Mannix, Baretta, and Jim Rockford smelled like, because this is how all men from the 1940s to the 1970s smelled --- if they weren't wearing Old Spice.

I was in a Kohls with a Sephora today, so I finally tried Beau de Jour on my skin and I love it so far. two hours in and I still love it. I have stayed away from Lavender and barbershop scents, but man does this take me back to the 80s in a good way. There is something that my grandfather had that this reminds me of and it made me smile. wonder if it is Brut?

Love a good barbershop fragrance/aromatic fougeres. Great choice for the next topic on this type of video. My current favorite is Masculin Pluriel by MFK. Not sure if you’ve tried that one, but guessing you have. To me it’s the perfect modern take on a classic barbershop fougere. Very high quality. Somewhat similar to sartorial and BDJ. More modern to me. Another that is becoming a favorite is Bon Monsieur by Rogue Perfumery. Small batch, niche, not IFRA compliant, founded by Manuel Cross. You absolutely need to get your nose on this one if you haven’t. It’s affordable and insane quality. Real oakmoss, retro, but super natural smelling, they really don’t make them like this anymore. Perfectly blended take on a classic fougere; could become my favorite. Scandal is a beast, so fresh and deep with just a tiny funk you can hardly tell is there but you know it is! Done in a way to make the fragrance better. Bracken is amazing but the cloves are just a tiny bit overkill! Love those two for certain occasions. Check out Endymion by Penhaligon’s, too. Familiar yet unique, kinda dreamlike, coffee in the dry down

I chose TF Grey Vetiver of Beau di jour. But that is nice. I also recently tried Floris london number 89, and ordered a bottle, very elegant. The longer i'm into fragrances the more i've opened up to different genres of scents. Now I have an unrelated question. My 23 year old son is going to be getting married at the end of this year. He has gotten into scents a bit more due to my obsession. What would a few recommendations would you maybe have for me to gift him as a wedding scent so that he can have that scent connection to his wedding and also think of his dear old day, on his special day? Maybe a video on scents for special occasions? OR scents to share with sons just starting out? Mine was strictly a polo red from his early teens, and since I've gotten into it he has gravitated to things such as amourage epic man, and iniito rehab.

I've sampled (and own) quite a few barbershop fragrances, and my top 3 are: 1. Tom Ford BDJ (my current signature scent) 2. Amouage Bracken Man 3. Houbigant Fougere Royale Depending on how you define a barbershop scent, Bracken Man might be considered by some more strictly a fougere, but I'm including it here. Sauvage Elixir is up there too, although I consider that even more of a departure from a traditional conceptualization of a barbershop scent. Viking is in my last spot as #5 (unless I'm considering Bois Du Portugal a barbershop fragrance, in which case I place it above Viking). I really want to sample TF's Fougere d'Argent someday as I know many people rank it above BDJ. Anyway, this is one of my favorite categories of fragrance that I recently fell in love with. edit; gotta give a shoutout to Zaharoff Signature and Signature Noir too. Love both of those, and could knock out some of my top 5 depending on the day. In general though, I find them soapier than the others, and so they take a lower spot for me. I love the overall scents but generally want to smell like cologne rather than soap, if that makes sense.

Some of my most fav Fougere in my collection are - Habit Rouge EDP it smells so classy, and dark at the same time, absolutely love it. Acqua di parma Colonia Essenza - This perfume, Idk why gives me a really good Fougere vibe, and it's a beautiful scent, have good longevity on my skin for 4-5 hours, plus you can get it for good price at discounters. These are the perfumes I would definitely buy again..

I enjoy everything barbershop fragrances! This is my favourite genre and the one that got me into this hobby since I wanted to replicate the memories of my father using the classics like Brut and Old Spice. This style of perfumery was the mainstream masculine type until the mid nineties with the last mainstream fougere being the Dolce & Gabbana pour homme. Then came the aquatics that put an end to the fougere reign. Great choices there Justin and very informative as always! Bracken man is in my wishlist but I heard it has been reformulated like most Amouages.

Love this style of video. Been a real treat to get a few of these lately. 👍🏻 For me, MFK Masculin Pluriel is THE modern fougere. Expensive, but I think it is the most mass appealing and modern take on this sort of scent. Zaharoff Signature is somewhat similar, but I still prefer Masculin Pluriel overall. 🙌🏻🔥 P.s. One of my recent discovery of a fougere/barbershop fragrance is from the house of guerlain.. it’s Habit Rouge de Guerlain, EDP.. the opening bursts with citrus and woodsy notes, giving a vibe of walking out of a barbershop with fresh cut, in the 80s/90s.. And the dry down turns into a smoky, leathery kind of vibe.. absolutely love it. My first fragrance from this house, and it gives niche quality in a designer price.. I think it’s really underrated, and needs to be discovered more..

YSL Rive Gauche is a classic barbershop fragrance. The old school bottles in aluminum can are even reminiscent of a can of barber foam. Invasion Barbare by MDCI used to be a fragcom sweetheart back around 09-12 and was the niche go to barbershop smell. Bracken and B612 are the modern kings of the genre. I don't think they'd really be that challenging to the modern intitiated nose. They could be in the middle category. For your younger generation that hasn't smelled much of the old fougeres that viking is playing off of, those two would just be modern fresh interesting and clean in an herbal way. Just a thought. I'm a big fan of this genre for spring especially - can really pull it off any time of year... other times I like to wear these are whenever it's cloudy and/or rainy (not sure why, but it just works) I own Nishane B-612 & Creed Viking from this list - I had a decant of Tom Ford Beau de Jour I'm surprised and almost disappointed you didn't mention (imo) the KING of barbershop frags: Invasion Barbare by Parfums MDCI - a bit pricey (i got the bottle without the bust) - old barbershop vibe with modern twist... if you've smelled it you get what I mean... I was gunna say modern take... but the old/traditional vibe is still there. You really do get what you pay for here as well.... performs great, projects well (but it's not super loud, like it's a smooth scent that projects)...if you've never smelled it... some people compare it to 1725 Histoires de Parfums - similar, not really the same... same ballpark though. if you've never smelled it, suggest getting a sample or travel spray - and it would for sure make this list

I have often wondered how the term Fougere which was originally made as an accord ; became its own classification of scents along with Chypre, Citrus aromatic , and the now frowned upon ORIENTAL. Due to the sympathetic world we exist in. The term fougere hase broadened so drastically that many don’t even rely on the FERN accord. I know there is that technical breakdown of what a fougere should be however it’s amazing how the after all Dior sauvage of all things is a fougere. Miles from that lovely Houbigant that initiated the genre. As of late my favorite fougere is Patric cologne of all things. It’s a very Un talked about fougere that can be had for under 50 dollars. And found in any insist gift shop at least here in the north east. It is super green fresh and makes a great wear on an early Sunday morning when the weather is great and you need a change from the usual suspects.

Great video Justin. There was a Jil Sander back in the 1980s or 1990s that had a profile very similar to Zaharoff Signature, I can't remember which one though. Sartorial is nice. I like Pasha Cartier EDT, but the creaminess is a bit much, I used a whole bottle in the past. Il love beau de jour and have a bottle. Viking is nice, but from Creed I prefer Bois Du Portugal as a Fougere, in fact it is my favorite of the brand. I tried the Jivako back in the 1990s, it was ok but not very exciting, and surely I don't remember it was that strong, probably they increased the concentration in the reformulation. Canadian Gent sound interesting. I love Scandal and Bracken man. Slight of Fern seems interesting. Did you ever try Dirty English by Juicy Couture or Penhaligon's Opus 1870?

Thank you, Justin. Just the video I was searching for at the moment. Just exploring this fougere/barbershop space and I really want to own one. Have decant of Tom Ford BdJ and I find it really fascinating. At the Barber's smells awesome but I will probably skip all of that and buy Fougere Royale. And yes, also tried MFK Masculin Pluriel and man... Words escape. Apparently close to Zaharoff, might buy Signiture Pour Homme instead. Great video.

I wore Maison Margiela At the Barbers quite a bit but got a bottle of Nobile 1942 Fougere Nobile and it seemed like the same but with a added note that elevated that scent. from Maison version.

Hi Justin have you ever tried fougere nobile from the brand Nobile 1942? It’s a really lovely frag it has notes of licorice tobacco and a musky dry down. It also has a very unique open with a soda water accord the really sets it apart from basically all others of tried. I learned about it from Mr Smellys channel a few years back. It’s a real hidden gem. However it leans mature I’d say 30 and up. I wouldn’t imagine younger people caring for it but still it’s a great frag that IMO is very well done. Still waiting for you to eventually try out Invasion Barbare as well.

Another banger video Justin--love the uniqueness of this channel. I personally love the fougere genre, and I really love how the niche market is attempting to put contemporary spins on a very old-school scent profile. Have you had the chance to smell TF's 'Fougere D'Argent'? Talk about an awesome fragrance. I guess this wouldn't be considered a traditional fougere by fougere puriest, but this stuff is just awesome and very unique--definitely niche smelling. The opening of ginger and orange is beautiful and the dry down with the slight sweetness of the tonka is to die for. This is a signature scent for me in the fall months when the hoodies and sweater come out. I just don't hear any reviewers talking about this scent. Love the channel bro--keep up the good work!

How would you compare Fougère Royale to Chanel egoiste platinum and at the barbers, I love the smell of both but I have no way to sample royale. Does it smell similar to the other two because if so I will definitely blind buy at 109$ ( I don’t know how long that deal will last lol)

Funny I used to think Barbershop scents smelled old-manish. Probably cause I never liked the original Old Spice or really ANY of the available aftershaves when I started using them back in the 90s. But then... Old Spice came out with White Water. N that was (from my perspective) the first of the new age of Barbershop scents that really smelled fresh n pleasant to me. Even then I wasnt interested in wearing that style of cologne but I did enjoy the scent after shaving. Nowadays I really enjoy wearing At The Barbers n D&G The One Gentleman. Its become one of my fav style of fragrance to wear.
