CARMEN was the original film noir! I sing in the chorus of a nonprofessional opera group and we've done this one a couple of times. I've noticed that right at the end of the third-act trio "Quant au Douanier, C'est Leur Affaire" where they sing "Oui, en avant!" there's a TRIPLE-dotted note! (I also noticed one in the climax of Verdi's MACBETH.) Note that because it's in French Don Jose's name is pronounced Joe-say! The original Paris production was actually something of a "succes de scandale" and had a full run. One opera that bears comparison to CARMEN is (surprisingly) Wagner's TRISTAN & ISOLDE. They were both (for the time) blatantly sexual. That foreshadowing theme you were playing sounds a bit like the famous "Liebestod" theme. Prosper Merimee was originally inspired by a scandalous story he'd heard from a Spanish duchess whose daughter he was tutoring. (The daughter later married Napoleon III and became Empress Eugenie.) If I could bring back two composers from the dead, I'd choose Gershwin and Bizet! Bizet died young, just as his career was starting--what other great work might he have done? You should do TALES OF HOFFMAN someday...
