I LOVE that you're wearing that GORGEOUS cognac belt with all black. So many women are afraid to mix black and brown which I feel is a rich and beautiful look!
@janicevin42075 жыл бұрын
Born and raised in France, I have now lived in Canada for many years (I am older). At the beginning here I always felt "overdressed" not because of any expensive clothes I was wearing but because I always had a scarf, a belt or shoes not sneakers or I will dress up (a bit)for any party where I would find everybody else in jeans and sweatshirt ! so i started to dress down and I lost my french style! Because now It is so much "in trend" to dress like a french girl/woman, I am trying to rediscover that "Je ne sais quoi" which is difficult to grasp when we don't live in France. Your video is really interesting and you are putting your finger on it. The square watch is a good example of what a french woman would wear day and night. As an older woman I would always wear a belt if my jeans/pants have loops. In your intro outfit I would have worn a more dressy belt and black belt to emphasize your beautiful blazer. In general young french women love flats: loafers, ballet flats... When you visit France that is one thing you notice first. Yes for the part 2!!!!...

I have a similar experience. Born and raised in and near France, lived in the US going on 23 years now. But I never buckled. I answered the question "why are you all dressed up" as many times as it took (the answer is "I don't have a reason, this is the way I dress"), until people stopped asking. It got easier once I entered the professional world. Now what I hear a lot is "you look so nice, you are making the rest of us look bad". I got worried about hearing that so I asked, but most have told me that they really didn't mean it, they enjoy watching different styles. Everyone at my workplace is professionally dressed, I just do it a little differently. So I don't think I make everyone else look bad. I have no qualms going to the grocery store in heels if that's the shoes that happen to be by my door when I go out (most often the case). The beauty about living in the US is the full freedom of appearance. You can wear pajamas to the store and people won't criticize. You can wear your best professional outfit, and that's fine too. One summer a few years ago, we were in a hat store in South Bretagne where my mom lives. She wanted to buy me a hat for my birthday. I was super tempted by a beautiful, intricate sun hat. But the sales woman (not a very good sales woman) talked me out of picking it because she said the only appropriate occasion to wear a hat like that would be at a wedding. Clearly had never been to the US. There is no non-appropriate occasion. I went with a simpler hat because I didn't want my mom to spend too much on the gift, but had I been alone, that's the hat I would have gotten and yes, worn!

A decade ago my best friend and I did a week in Paris together. Before we packed, we discussed making a big effort to not in any way dress like a stereotypical tacky American tourist. Much to our delight, we were misidentified as French women on 2 separate occasions.... YES! Our style lesson occurred as we watched a Parisian woman effortlessly tying a very complicated bow to sheer perfection sans mirror ... ahhh, to be like her! But what no one told us about beforehand was the beauty of Parisian men. From the guy begging in the subway to the well heeled ....ooh la la for 2 middle-aged American divorcées!!

French Girl CHIC defined! Gorgeous...every look! I love the black turtleneck with the jeans. Also the white shirt and RED SHOES..OOH LA LA! J'ADORE!! That would be my go-to casual look. I have always loved French Style. I followed it for decades. There are elements that still stay with me....like the VALUES you mentioned. They underline my core style. However, it was while visiting in Paris that I realized I had a definite style...and it was not French. I was complemented on that style and began to think about it. Besides a high quality black turtleneck and slacks....I also have spent decades in cowboy boots, Navajo jewelry, sweeping prairie-like skirts. After Paris, I returned and examined my wardrobe. My cowboy boots were from Italy. My French fringe bag from France....in fact....I love Isabel Marant. Decades of following French values and style have definitely shaped my style for the better. It has only really become more myself when I realized that my soul has always lived in the American Southwest. My deep admiration for the French values and designers have kept the two linked forever in my wardrobe. Actually, I could throw a bit of a Japanese/Erte vibe in the mix as well....but mostly...it is a French-Southwestern U.S. FUSION.
@AlyssaBeltempo5 жыл бұрын
Oooh I love that!! What a great mix and love the point of mixing the values of French style with your own personal style... And it's true Isabel Marant does have a very America -mid west and relaxed vibe ... Thanks as always for watching Lisa in so glad you liked the video! xo

LOVE your videos! I'm over 65, have lived in Texas my entire life, and this is my style. You & I have a similar body size & shape. I'm happily retired, but am always on the go. I, too, get compliments on how I always look so nice, so well put together, they cant wait to see what I'll wear next, etc. A gentleman I went out with lately told me he knows no matter where we go, I'll always be "well turned out." We recently went to an opera in Dallas (my first), & I was complimented by 4 younger women & 2 gentlemen on my appearance. I am average looking, so it must have been what I was wearing. I have been asked by my girlfriends to help them shop. I try, but if they have a different body type/shape/size, I'm not much help. I only know what works for me. I hope to find a one month lease on an apt or house in Paris in Spring 2020, so I can relax & enjoy leisurely taking in the sights and also meeting & talking with locals. I don't yet speak French. Any ideas for how I might learn enough in 4 months to get by? Is there a French translation for "y'all"?😉

I love this message so much! I want to know, did you get to Paris? How was it? From your comment, I can tell you're a showstopper of a woman and I hope you're still on your fabulous journey. Update please if you read this 😘💋❤
@user-ei8rb7sj6c Жыл бұрын
@Olivia Knight Ahh.. the best laid plans… not to dwell on unhappy events, but 2020 didn’t turn out as planned. Two of my close family members passed away, I was sick myself for six weeks (not Covid, thank Goodness!) and I ended a relationship with a gentleman I had been seeing for over a year. Add to that all the travel and airline uncertainties, and my trip to Paris has been put on the back burner for now. But I believe it’s all in God’s hands and if & when I’m supposed to go it will happen easily. I’m the meantime, Im still enjoying playing with clothes! Slowly but surely I’m downsizing & reorganizing my wardrobe, donating those pieces I rarely wear. If I arrange it one way and it doesn’t feel “right”, I change it. The clothes I’ve kept have more room to breathe, and since it’s easier to see them all at once, I’m finding it much easier to put together more “new to me” outfits using clothes I’ve had but never thought of combining before! I find I’m still having “aha” moments frequently, so I’m taking my time with the process. It’s a little like putting a puzzle together. Just today I thought, since I wear separates 90% of the time, why not move my dresses and skirts into my secondary closet, and move my IKEA chest of drawers into my primary closet to create a prettier storage space for things I wear most often that can be folded? Slowly but surely, all the pieces are beginning to find the place where they belong. Plus, I can just visualize how much joy it will bring some woman who’s thrift shopping to find high quality gently worn clothes at such low prices. Win-win! 😉🥰😁

Great video and part two would be welcome. I like the splint screen idea. What about showing the non French (North American version) on one side and the French version of same outfit on the other. One important value I recall reading years ago was: emphasize focus on your best assets rather than trying to de-emphasize your worst qualities. For instance, if you have a great derrière you might wear a pencil skirt with a peplum detail to subtly draw attention to it. If you have a gorgeous smile, highlight this with a rich red color, etc.

Yes to a video on French style vloggers, bloggers, and online stores. They seem to be inherently more invested in slow fashion than this side of the Atlantic. I do my best to follow French influencers and shops, but one of the challenges of french online shops is they sometimes don't ship to Canada or make it easy to figure out how to do that. If you don't already know her, Justine Leconte fits the bill for french style, slow fashion designer, sustainability-influenced.

I’m English with continental parents, and I’ve always dressed this way without giving it any thought. Well fitted classics with a twist the twist being the belt, bag shoe etc. People always comment that I always look nice which is very pleasant but you have to do it for yourself 💜

I just found you and I’m in love! You are lovely and your looks are spot on! I’m 73 but I can take your looks and translate for me! I smiled thru the whole video! BTW: my hair is a little below my shoulders and natural color of white. I’m letting it grow longer. Why not?? Lolol 🌹

You nailed French girl chic and I think your outfit in the opening sequence is very French. French women love a classic fitted blazer. Having been to France more than 20 times, I think that French women are at ease and comfortable with their bodies ( maybe it is the training they get on topless beaches 😜). Also a French woman will spend a lot of money on high end lingerie pour faire le sexy and to feel sexy too! Thanks Alyssa for another great video and please do the video on your favourite French influencers and sustainable brands!

Sandra Maki: Funny you mention the sexy lingerie. My mother always stressed to us (her daughters) that we should wear beautiful lingerie to feel great and feminine and could not understand why we settled for plain, cotton underwear.

Re 2nd part: yes please!! Idea: 3rd part makeup/hair (perfect nude/red lip, well defined brows) the ponytail, where to place it so it looks good, plus a chignon, low ballerina bun. Merci! 💖

It helps to be thin to carry off these looks, which are beautiful and classy. I’m quite curvy and the more I layer sweaters, blouses, jackets, the bulkier I look.

Dang woman, you nailed it AGAIN! Parisian Chic comes oh si naturel a toi! A great accessory in this segment was the chair. I swore you were seated at a Café. ; ) And as always your style confidence, just oozes from within and is your best accessory. That flawless French accent was sur le point as well! Magnifique Alyssa!
