A Guide to Plein Air Painting is a practical guide for all artists contemplating their first outdoor painting session.
Plein air painting is the act of painting outside, and it came to prominence in the 18th Century, when paint makers began to manufacture tubes of oil paint. This facilitated a greater ease in taking painting gear out of doors in order to capture the ever changing light across the landscape. Today plein air painters face exactly the same challenges as those artists in the 18th Century: how to keep colour mixes vibrant? How to evoke the atmosphere of a scene? What brushes and colours should I work with? How to carry wet paintings home?
This film, A Guide to Plein Air Painting, gives practical advice on what you need to look for when painting out of doors, what you need to prepare and take with you, and how to get the very best from your painting session.

Hi Lisa, I remember you very well, as a landscape artist of the year winner, a while back now, and as a judge alongside Fern Britten. Great to see you again, representing Jackson Art Supplies, who maintain reasonably priced art materials all year round. That said: I congratulate you on your success, and thank you for presenting this video breakdown of plein air painting. The tips for demonstrating the positives and negative aspects of painting outdoors is especially useful to know, if one is a beginner, but also a useful reminder for artists who may be familiar with the materials mentioned, but who are less frequent with painting outdoors. Thank you for sharing these important points to En Plien Air painting.😊

Lovely video, you’ve left me feeling confident enough to step out. Just starting into oils so did a couple of practice runs in the garden to make sure I had all I needed and nothing I didn’t. This video is so loaded with good advice I’ve watched it at least six times so far. Thank you for sharing so much great advice.

Very nice presentation for beginners, well done. And what a background!! I've taken a screen shot of it as reference for painting(s). One issue I don't think was covered--linseed oil -and other drying oils- can spontaneously combust when left in crumpled rags/paper towels unless sealed from air. In the field, the safest thing to do would be dampen any oily rags/paper with water and seal in plastic bag with the air squeezed out of the bag. Then, upon 'return to civilization', the rags can be 'treated' with enough soapy water to remove most of the oil & left to dry away from combustibles (hung: from the spout of a slop sink, or over a metal wire or some other non-combustible support). This is no joke, I have personal experience that 'drying oils' left crumpled up in a rag is a FIRE HAZARD --and it can take less than 30min under "ideal conditions" (for the fire). Confirm this at any 'fire station'. They probably have a pamphlet about it.

I had the problem of bringing wet canvases home and I made a wooden box that my paints and brushes go in and then the canvas has an area where it slots in to the top and I can flip it over where there’s enough space nothing will touch the canvas surface

Thank you! Very useful video. I use watercolours and pastels so there's less hassle carrying things around, but maybe you could make a video about that too? Pencils, inks or pastels in plein air. That would be nice. Thank you very much!

Wonderful video with so many importatns tips. I myself use another system in case anyone is interested which is a Blackfoot Lite Pochade Box. Its a box you can adapt on a tripod, but its also great because it gives you very organized plans to lay palette, brushes etc... and its light and a camera tripod is light too so can walk about without carrying too heavy equipment... But Thank you Lisa !!!

It's funny that they act as of it's any different than painting inside, you do nothing different if you know how to paint inside you can do "plein air" no need for an hour long video, that being said it's still a cool video and had lots of fun watching her particular way of doing things.

Glaring sunlight. Rain. Wind that yanks your paper and small objects away. A dozen people who want you to make a painting of Celine Dion. Getting the cops called on you because people who do that are without object-permanence. No thank you sis!!!
