Summary
St. George Stock authored the Guide to Stoicism, also published as A Little Book on Stoicism. Stoicism was a school of Hellenistic philosophy founded in Athens by Zeno of Citium in the early 3rd century BC. The Stoics considered destructive emotions to be the result of errors in judgment, and that a sage, or person of "moral and intellectual perfection," would not undergo such emotions. Stoics were concerned with the active relationship between cosmic determinism and human freedom, and the belief that it is virtuous to maintain a will (called prohairesis) that is in accord with nature. If you strip Stoicism of its paradoxes and its willful misuse of language, what is left is simply the moral philosophy of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, dashed with the physics of Heraclitus. Stoicism was not so much a new doctrine as the form under which the old Greek philosophy finally presented itself to the world at large. It owed its popularity in some measure to its extravagance. A great deal might be said about Stoicism as a religion and about the part it played in the formation of Christianity but these subjects were excluded by the plan of this volume which was to present a sketch of the Stoic doctrine based on the original authorities.

If you are researching a paper due tomorrow than try to focus on that and write your three to five paragraphs around this central theme of simple syllogism and wisdom; try to match the mathematics up with the rhetoric and dialectic and you shall get a good grade on you paper. After a lot of years and ofcourse having a bad time which shattered my ideals and dreams i became an autodidact stoic. I just learned about this philosophy, but i wouldnt say that this is the main lead info of what it is. I believe it is about questioning your feelings always everyday and try to rationalize it. When your rationalisation makes sense you can finally feel peace with yourself for a short moment of time. When you embrace this way of living it could be hard and the only escape could be the moments you are being able to think (like dancing, playing a game, or other mentally distracting excercises) Stoicism is a gift that makes you extraordinary from everyone else but it has also its downsides. Like overthinking and difficulty with letting yourself go in the flow and JUST not think for a moment

I am high as shit rn I opened Pandora’s box of stoicism and now and am feeling pretty stoked and really and proud of my “foolish” highschool dropout self for learning about this shit on my own while people in college are paying to procrastinate and anxiously rush thru not being able to fully absorb because they have 50 million other things that are gonna end up going thru one ear and out pens and fingertips. This is a good book about the history of stoicism and its relation to the ancient thought, philosophy, and religion. However, I do not recommend it as a starting point for learning stoicism, because the emphasis on logic and physics distracts from the ethics. Rather I recommend you read Marcus Aurelius first (because it is fun), then Epictetus, because it is clear, and then as much of Seneca as you want, for it is well-written but disorganized, and then come back to this book.

The lable stoicism is not in the massage its the power and intention behind what mind sees. Truth is the way of life and that is what all evil seeks to contradict. Bucause the way is seeking the path in alignment with life. The path means defeating the circles of death and this was to hard for the masses to self discipline in doing. So we once chose the easy living through less restraint, giving birth to evil thoughts. Now our past masters can see more clearly because more lessens have led us to embrace this key to heaven. I disagree. Logic can often actually lead to irrational patterns of thought, which lead to irrational answers, which lead to irrational actions, that provide irrational outcomes. The devaluation of liberty was the main reason why the Roman bourgeoisie adopted Stoic theory. He gave the main food in the sense of duty, in trust and submission to Fate, the reconciliation of man with misfortunes and the renunciation of any claim of better fortune. In this sense, Stoicism is emerging as a philosophy of submission, and from a political point of view, as we literally pointed out in our last presentation in May, Stoicism is the main recipe for building citizens. It provides the main philosophical background to Christianity and all the ideologies born of the Enlightenment in the West. The goal is to shape reality, beautiful or not, but such that it leaves no room for escape. It is necessary to set a purpose in life, the best, a collective purpose which we are called to serve, those who blindly believe in it, until it prevails. Thus Marxism poses the victory of the proletariat, capitalism the profit of money and the prosperity of capital, the administrative model of representation the service of the party line for the good of the party and so on. The historical events of the time that we call "late antiquity" are in our case revealing. Stoicism did not move the Macedonian kings because they were uncompromising realists while conquering the Romans (Festus). The Romans, in contrast to the Greeks, who had the most important philosophy of all, had realized their ecumenical mission, so the administration (Farrington) was more important to them. During the period of the pax romana, the Roman ruling elite recorded the limits of its spread, stopped looting after the Romans became champions in slaughter and ruin, and planned the exercise of command over the conquered. What will management say? The way I collect taxes, which now seems to me more cost-effective than war. But how do I manage so many people peacefully? With the democracy of the Greeks? But even my own res publica is rejected. I need a strong administration. And an empire was made. I need both the right philosophy and a religion of submission. "Stoicism" is very trendy these days. I think a lot of people who are complaining thought they were going to be watching that kind of very low or surface level "stoicism" that they see expressed as cute little motivational sayings on memes that are all over the place on social media. "Stoicism" is also very popular here on KZbin. Most of them (with the obvious exception of this video), are nothing more than just regular motivational videos that include the word "stoic" or 'stoicism' in their titles, just to take advantage of the current trendiness of the word, working the algorithm hoping it'll make their dime-a-dozen motivational videos go viral.
