Great presentation sir! The talk about neighborhood uses, the LDS Prepper has a couple good videos on how they built their community comms plan. 73 all

Great presentation! As far as business use. The FCC will no longer gives a GMRS license to anyone but individuals. I don't see anything prohibiting it's use in the furtherance of a business(except banning advertising) but a business can no longer get a license and allow its employees to use it's license.

Great presentation. Thank you, Jim and RATPAC. I have found that I only want to look at "Repeater Capable" GMRS radios; some, especially "bubble pack", are not repeater capable. A question for Jim, if he is monitoring, is there a "height above ground limit" for external antennas?

Licensed GMRS user here… from what I’ve seen, and learned, I would never want to deal with the people on Ham Radio. Those people are different than me.

Licensed Ham and GMRS here. What do you mean “deal” with Hams. Every radio service, group, etc., has its share of knuckleheads and self-important individuals - Ham Radio right up there with all of them. What makes you so special anyway?

Great presentation, but I'm confused.. how can a private repeater group consider that frequency private and run you off from it? No one owns the frequency. They could switch their repeater off if they don't want you using it, but can't forbid you from using that frequency.

Yeah there's always the complaint that no one owns those frequencies so how can they do that. My only guess is they bought the equipment the repeater, duplexer, coax, antenna, possible tower, and are paying for the electricity used. So they get to control how much electricity you are using LOL :) Is it right>? not really but I kinda get it. It's a big cost to run a repeater and upkeep it so its only right to charge a small fee for the upkeep and power.

You can use the frequency for simplex, but leave out the repeater keying tone or number, and don't maliciously interfere with other's transmissions.

Simplex repeaters are authorized on the 462 Main channels (15-22, "mobile, hand-held portable, repeater, base and fixed stations may transmit on these 8 channels"), and Part 95 repeaters have a height limit of 200ft before specific FAA and FCC approval is required. GMRS used to be Part 90(A), permitting part 90 radios. For a while, radios were being certified under part 90 and 95(E), but this has been discontinued by the FCC. Equipment already certified may continue to be used, but no new equipment will be certified.
