Fun fact! In an interview with Destructoid, director Jonas Kaerlev confirmed that the reason it's up to 50-player multiplayer is because they punched in 50 player support when stress-testing the netcode, and it worked, so they felt no need to limit it below that.

Massive multiplayer platformers are hard to come by, and the only parallel that comes to my mind is a Super Mario 64mod. Why did you decide to add such an unusual feature? That’s a great question. I don’t think anyone anticipated we would add 50 player multiplayer. We were adding multiplayer, and at one point we were like “Alright, how many does this work with?” And we tested it. Even just testing a lot of people is really difficult because you need to get 50 people in the same room and it’s like, “Oh God, how do we coordinate this?” And we managed to test 50 players and it worked and we were like, “OK cool, we’ll just make that the limit then.” There’s no reason to limit it to four or five or whatever if we can do 50. I think the only reason we didn’t go higher is that we couldn’t get enough people to test it."
