Directed energy weapons, that our civilization is just now getting to be effective in the field are great, and can do wonderous things, or at least, they will when perfected. But still, there's a lot to be said for small, dense rounds moving very very fast. I suspect we'll keep our 'normal' guns around for a few hundreds or even thousands of years to come, just because a wall of high-speed lead/depleted uranium is just so damn effective. Also, the _BANG_ and the smell of cordite is pretty cool, too.

Given the hive mind scenario, do the queens live in a certain type of identifiable structure that could be located from orbit? If so, an orbital strike to take out the queen(s) would make the cleanup planet side much easier.
@lucielm11 ай бұрын
The thing we see is that hiveminds are less like leaders and breeders, but rather a node of focus. Same with the pretorans. If 1 or 2 pods is enough to start a swarm it has to be a salt and burn campaign. I can imagine that the first few planets thought the same and blasted the hives from orbit, but in the end a pratorian probably evolved into a new hiveling/queen. Maybe even a swarmling is able to form a new hive solo. We saw them attacking one another for seemingly no reason while others went docile. That sounds like they are making a push to become the next hive by feeding enough.
@alfredkabatay65610 ай бұрын
They could work like Indian jumping ants where they're basically all female, with the queen given off pheromones stopping all the other females from producing eggs. If the queen dies in those colonies, all the females sense/smell the lack of her pheromones and start fighting each other for control, which is quickly established and everything returns to normal.

Just a timeline on the sci-fi, Star Ship Troopers was written in the late 50s. The next bug theme baddies (that I'm aware of) is Warhammer 40K in the late 80s in continuation the popular Warhammer table top game. Starcraft was the latest in "Bugs are Baddies" with the Zerg, with pretty much a Copy & Paste of Tyranid. If anyone is aware of bugs vs humans don't be shy to add to the list.
@thedarkcorrupter10 ай бұрын
The xenomorph from aliens was called bugs. The comics and books it inspired basically showed colonial marines and the human military engaged on planet wide scales against them. I think they fit
@lupaswolfshead997110 ай бұрын
starcraft was originally supposed to be a 40k game yet legal issues caused them to change it. I vaguely remember a youtuber doing a vid on it a few years ago
