My great great grandfather died at the mountains there, but I don't know exactly when or where. All I know is that he sent a letter from city under the mountains, saying something like he is going to the mountains and then there was silence, never heard of him again, not even a death letter, just nothing. There is a high possibility that he didn't make it untill December but he is a Soldier of Heaven for me.

The Grandfather of my Grandfather was a WW1 veteran on Italian side and there's a small chance that he saw that. On one side I'm happy that he survived, on the other hand I Always am sad about all the Italians, Austrians, Hungarians and different Balkaners that lost their life on the alps, gaining nothing but an unjust death.

There have been a lot of avalanches that day, some were probably natural, some were from artillery fire on mountain tops above the enemy emplacements... no winners that day, and very few survivors. It is unclear how many people died on White Friday, but it was at least 10 000 in avalanches that month. Sadly there are almost no records about it.
@charlesmayberry2825
@charlesmayberry2825 2 жыл бұрын
I see someone already mentioned it, but the avalanche was caused by both sides shooting the snowpack on the mountains knowing there were avalanche conditions, trying to bury the other. The planes are more symbolism than anything because WWI planes wouldn't be able to fly at that altitude, WWII some of the planes could. The thing is at the kinds of altitudes you're talking in the mountains would require the later combat aircraft, most WWII planes the engines used single stage super chargers, that would allow operation to a flight ceiling of 16K feet, which mid/late war planes some were dual stage super chargers that could fly even higher. WWI the planes were N/A engines, they can't achieve the kind of power required to keep the prop running hard enough for the thinner atmosphere. Remember as you gain in elevation it's screwing you over a couple different ways, the higher you get, the less air, there is, the less fuel you can add to the engine, as the fuel air mixture needs to be right to make decent power. So as you go up the engine gets significantly weaker. The second factor is prop planes push air over an airfoil (the prop) the air is being pushed backwards, which in turn pushed the plane forward. As the air thins out, there's less air to push off the prop, which means the airspeed will be less at the same/equivalent engine power settings. So the chance of an aerodynamic stall increases, minimum flight speed goes up. Between those two factors the old WWI planes had a very low flight ceiling that would have made mountain flying unwise, and often impossible.
@logirex
@logirex 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah heavy shelling from both sides lead to the worst snow avalanche in recorded human history with some 10k dead in that december month alone. The WWI and WWII (bf109) airplanes is to symbolize that these soldiers rest eternal and they have seen the end of wars.. both WWI and WWII. Just a few years ago they found another well preserved soldier in those mountains one hundred years after WWI and he was finally able to rest with his remianing relatives.

And that is before factoring in extreme winds and constantly changing visibility. I know in ww2 the Soviets primarily used the I-153 biplane in the caucuses because it’s mobility and slow speed made it the “safest” plane to fly at altitudes where reconnaissance and air support were practical.

In WW2 flight at 20,000 ft (6000 meters) was not uncommon with the crew wearing oxygen masks. USAAF bombing missions were regularly flown that high as all the US heavy bombers used turbocharged engines, so German fighters like the Bf-109 need that capability to engage them. As an example a P-47D Thunderbolt had a service ceiling of 42, 000 feet (12,700 meters).

I agree...I love that they immortalize the stories that should be remembered, from all sides. This is an absolutely beautiful piece, and I got shivers as usual from them XD I think the dogfight there is supposed to symbolize all the events from then forward that these fallen soldiers "saw" from their eternal post. I do know that many of the avalanches were set off intentionally, but open-cockpit planes would not have handled the Alps' conditions.

The explosions you see at 4:20 are the mountains that were detonated during the war. When the war bewteen Italy and Austria-Hungary set in, both sides of course tried to gaint he high ground, setting up artillery and what not on the highest places to be able to attack the other side. This caused a trench-warfare on the highest places, and just as they did at the Western front, they started to dig under the other side's trench, depositing large amoungs of explosves to destroy the other side there. They blew up entire mountain-tops to achieve this. Also, only now, because of global warming are many of these frozen soldiers finally coming out from their icy tombs, finally being able to be laid to rest properly in a grave. Each year now the glaciers are retreating more and more, revealing the trenches, dug-outs and barracks up there, revealing soldier after soldier as well.

They attempted to many times, but usually it's just lucky enough to safely fly at all. Much less do any sort of fighting or sort of operation. Mountains from all of history to even today are some of the worst fighting imaginationable. Think about this. Even just resupply to troops would be incredibly difficult. You have to move heavy vehicles and equipment across this and it's barely possible. In war not even close. Yeah you could send a battalion into it but you better hope there's no one already there and that you don't really do ANY fighting because you'll just eat up all your supplies and be completely done. This is one of the ways terror groups survived the US for so long. The Middle East is not pure flat dessert. Unless you know what your doing and have an extreme overabundance if resources your not taking the fight to anyone while Mountains are in the way. And good luck assaulting someone already there.

On other fronts usually what's dug up are bones, buttons, helmets, watches or other metallic personal effects, but on the alps they're still up there

Hi Mr. Terry! The "White Friday" happened because the temperature on the Alps during 1916 was too high and they fired on the glaciers to provoke avalanches. Also the real name of the tragedy is "Santa Lucia nera" or "black Saint Lucy", because black is the colour of grief and it happened on 13th of December, Saint Lucy's Day. The term White Friday was coined in English but I can't find anything that says why. Hope I helped!

SO both the Italians and austro Hungarians would use TONS of artillery in the alps and they would aim for the snow covered mountain tops to cause avalanches. So long story short they where used as weapons and many of them where on purpose and other where not.

The way I see it, the soldier who is "speaking" in this song died and he body is still up there trapped in the ice, so he saw the war and all the other wars since on his final watch. So he saw the planes although they might not have been part of the White war. Apparently the soldiers of both sides aimed artillery on the slopes above the soldiers to cause the avalanches and because of the digging into the mountain to create tunnels and barracks already weakened the icepack, the resulting avalanches were some of the biggest in history.
