Yes!!That was the first thing my mind went to also, when he said Tim was the only survivor!! I can’t even *IMAGINE* the guilt I would feel if I was just goofing around with friends- and the next thing I know, I’m waking up in a hospital and find out my silliness accidentally killed my friend and a brave stranger trying to save me. Even though he is in no way “responsible” for any of it...I can only guess how much therapy he needed/needs to cope with it. 😞

In first aid, a major lesson is always to assess risk in a situation before trying to help, because this kind of situation where an ignored threat endanger rescuers is a recognised phenomenon. Not that they could ever have seen electrofied water coming. But it does raise the question of who that passerby was who had the insight to realize, "Hey, there's something dangerous about touching that water! I wonder if the miraculously just-passing-by nurse caught on and had the water blocked off. How long did it take people to disable what could have been a far worse threat?!

If I try to imagine myself in the exact scenario, I highly doubt that thought would ever cross my mind. My immediate impulse would probably be to do exactly what the friend did - and jump in after them (assuming they had a seizure or something) and worried about them drowning. 😞

@@glorygloryholeallelujah I have to agree, I feel like if the security guard had taken just a few moments longer to examine what happened- if he’d seen what had caused the fall into the pond into the first place- he may have done differently and not died. But he may have only seen men in the pond and not what had caused them to fall and become unconscious. He may have assumed they were drunk and tripped, maybe hit their heads, and dived in to save them assuming that the water was safe. The friend couldn’t have known. He probably assumed the jet was strong and surprised the first man so he lost his balance and fell over the rail. I think the passerby saw the security guard jump in and immediately convulse and lose consciousness and so knew for a fact the water was dangerous, but everyone who came after would’ve had to be told, including the nurse who could probably infer for themselves from what the first passerby said that it was electrified, even if the first passerby didn’t know exactly why it was dangerous. It’s so horrible and sad that it was ultimately a maintenance issue that caused it. If they’d had the circuit breaker and kept up with maintenance of that pond appropriately no one would have died at all.

The security guard was my uncle, this day has and will always be hard for our family. He wasn’t supposed to be there, he was covering a shift for a friend. He was highly trained, track/swimming/ karate stand out, was engaged, in school at Wright State studying computer science, was amazingly artistic. It’s been 30 years and I think of him most every day. It was a tragic loss for our family. So please, before you go speculating and making rash comments…remember for those of us who lost someone that day, we are still grieving.

Only rash thing I think about incidents like this is that it was pre the new millennium (2000s) so not every state had strict safety guidelines to prevent sad accidents like these I never blame the people who died I blame the government for allowing the poor victims to die due to their poor management skills 😔

The ride was renamed Top Gun at flamingo land. I went on it as a kid in the 90s and my seats shoulder bars would not click down but the one on my legs did trapping me in the pod. The operator saw there was an issue but could not fix it and set the ride going despite me yelling for them not to!!! One of the scariest moment of my life and looking back slightly unbelievable!

Here’s what I just finished writing in my comment before scrolling through the other comments: “As a young child, I almost lost all of my thumb at KI in the fall of 1989. A ride bar slammed on my hand as my friends were exiting a ride in front of me. Even though I was screaming and my friends were trying to open the bar, no employee ever came until my dad heard me screaming, found an employee, and forcefully pushed him to where we were. The employee couldn’t get the bar open to get my hand out either, and the fire department had to cut it out. Thankfully, I only lost a bit of my thumb but I still have nerve damage from the incident”

I saw a girl fall out of her harness while she was riding "The Zipper" at the LA County fair some 25 years ago. I was standing in line for the same ride when it happened. She was screaming as she was tossed and tumbled around in the metal cage(good thing it was caged or she would have fallen quite a distance onto concrete). She went silent after about 30 seconds of yelling(I assume she was unconscious). They finally stopped the ride and told everyone to go away. I have no idea what happened to her, but it was obviously a very rough ride for her.

Fun Fact: There is a graveyard on the Kings Island property. It predates the park by more that 160 years. It had all but been forgotten about and was only rediscovered once construction was ready to begin. It is commonly known today as the the Dog Street Cemetery and is located north of the main entrance to the park's parking lot.

There's something oddly morbid about fatal accidents at theme parks. Most people visit for a fun and memorable endeavor and many have fond childhood memories of such visits. To think that a certain few had their last moments of life occur at a theme park is a chilling thought to say the least.

Electrical engineer here: It's wasn't the lack of a "circuit breaker" that caused the electrocution. (I would highly doubt there was no circuit breaker. Even the shoddiest of electricians won't wire something that small straight to a bus.) But, rather there are 2 other methods for protection against electric shock around water. One, is proper grounding. Without grounding, a fault that ends up electrifying the water won't cause a short that would trip the nearest upstream breaker (even if the branch circuit didn't have its own breaker, it would trip the panel breaker.) Clearly, the water feature was not properly grounded. Second, would be a GFCI device. This can be a specific type of circuit breaker, a type of receptacle, or a cord mounted unit (like the one pictured in the video). The purpose of a GFCI is to detect current "leaking" from the phase wire to ground. When this type of fault is detected, the circuit is shut off at the GFCI device. In this case, even without proper grounding, the current that passed through these mens' bodies would have been an imbalance and would have shut the circuit off as soon as the first man touched the water.

I actually worked at Kings Island and was working a double the day this went down. More specifically, I worked in the Coney Shop and was working the Adventure Express kiosk in full view when the Oktoberfest incident happened, even though I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. This isn't an entirely accurate account of what happened. The woman who died on the Flight Commander died because she tried to stand up in the ride, presumably to get a better view of the chaos ensuing down the Coney Way. She was also very drunk as were the guys who ended up getting electrocuted by the fountain and, for a period of time after this incident, Kings Island went dry. They didn't sell alcohol anymore. They've since resumed. I still have my letter that Kings Island sent to me, who was a high school student at the time, that threatened to sue me if I talked to the press about the incident without their permission.

@@benullom2301 Apparently, she was observed by a ride employee trying to stand up. Also, it was not a normal day in the park as indicated by the introduction. There were two major events. There was a gospel concert festival and it was "red shirt" day, which in contemporary terms, would be a pre-designated day by the LBGTQ community to assemble within the park. It was called red shirt day because they would self identify by wearing red shirts. It had been a crazy day, actually. I know this story says it happened on a Sunday, but I could swear it was a Saturday just because we were open until 11pm that night, and we were usually only open until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays, barring a special event. Maybe the gospel festival qualified as a special event. Incidentally, it was determined that there was indeed something faulty with the ride harnesses, regardless of how her death came about, and the ride was shut down for some time afterward because of it. Also, the ride really didn't go up all that high, like 20 feet. The more interesting story that I would like to see covered here is the grad night (a park night specifically reserved for graduating high school seniors) story from sometime in the early 80s in which a park goer fell onto the Eiffel Tower elevator from the top level and, well, they collected him in pieces. Shortly, thereafter, grad night was permanently discontinued at Kings Island. I want to say this happened before the legal drinking age was changed from 18 to 21 and that he was drunk too. But I could be wrong about that. I was just in elementary school when that one happened. But it was big news at the time.

It was uploaded quite recently, what's being said is he hopped a fence, went up some access stairs and out on a girder to attempt to get a better view, where he fell into the elevator shaft and became tangled until the elevator moved again...

this reminded me of a mass casualty scenario i had for a class. there were two simulated casualties and a bottle with red liquid in a room and we were in another room. we were sent one at a time to the room with the casualties to try to help. it took 8 total casualties for students to figure out not to touch the red bottle... that was a third of the class... after the simulated incident, we were told a story about a patient passing out in the basement of some building. 4 other people walked in all at different times only to all pass out as well. they all died from carbon monoxide. its sad that multiple people are just trying to help but become victims too.

A decent, yet chilling lesson in restraint and critical thinking. Had the security guard and coworker not immediately jumped in to assist, they may've survived. The living bystander displayed not quick reflexes, but quick thinking; they managed to quickly deduce that the water must've been electrified and reached for specifically a non-conductive object to use in the recovery of the three victims. If there's ever a spontaneous emergency, it's better to show some restraint and think before you act. No idea why your teacher presented that scenario and story to you, but I hope you never need to use the information.

This is why many rides have attendants that don't just check, but pull on restraints and make people put up their hands to ensure that no one is using their body or belongings to create a gap that could slide them. Heck, some places the attendants "adjust" and will press down on restraints that appear to not be fully situated. Everytime there's an uncomfortably tight restraint it's because people fight them. Accidents such as the woman in the video definitely need to be avoided as well, but overzealous attendants don't believe that people adjusted, because they've seen someone not do it before.

When I was a little kid in the early 90s, I was totally able to slip out of the restraint when I was riding the Big Dipper (an old wooden coaster) at Geauga Lake just by raising my arms - I wasn’t even trying to slip out. I quickly slid back into my seat and grabbed the restraint so I wouldn’t get flung off. I also remember chilling at the tented picnic area, also at Geauga Lake, when suddenly I heard one of the birthday party balloons pop very loudly with a sharp bang. Some adults and I looked up, and we saw a hole in the cloth ceiling above us. We looked down, and wedged into the wooden picnic table not too far away from me was something that looked like a large screw. I must’ve been about 15-20 feet away. As I was little, I don’t know if anything was done after that. Edit: It was at Geauga Lake!

I knew exactly what was happening as soon as I heard of the convulsions from touching water. I once put my hand into one of my fish tanks and I yanked it out hard without even realizing why. I tested it again with my pinky and felt another charge. Apparently the heater had shorted, not enough power to cause any harm to me, but I was pretty surprised the fish was okay.

I had a narrow escape many years ago. I was 16/17?, there was a drop tower type ride with 2 bullet-nose cars back to back, each had large open windows and held 2 people. A safety bar locked infront of passengers to hold them in. The cars went up horizontally, turned so one faced down, dropped (fast), rose up, turned so other faced down, dropped, rose, return to horizontal then descend to ground. I went in alone. When my car faced down the safety bar unlocked itself! I managed to wedge feet out to sides (thank God I was alone!) and locked arms to prevent me falling out that large window, it was terrifying! As I shakily got out the car I told the attendant what happened, he told me off for unlocking the bar, he wouldn't believe I hadn't. I ran to a police officer I knew and told him the ride was dangerous, as we headed over we could see a young boy hanging half out with his father desperately holding onto him! He ordered the ride closed until it could be inspected, all the while the attendant insisted the father and I were at fault, he even sent the ride off empty to prove it. Yep, that car came back with the safety bar loose!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the safety bars aren't able to be opened by the guest being restrained by it. All the rides I've been on with restraints have been checked by ride operators and have to be unlocked by them afterwards.

There will have been over-current trip devices present, but given the year we're talking here, quite likely not three-phase ground-fault circuit interupter type devices as you would commonly find in the modern day. Basic over-current trip devices will not trip until current flow becomes so significant as to exceed the devices trip current by a considerable margin, which is to say, soft faults to ground can easily leave circuits energised when only protected by these types of devices.

My family and I were there that day too! We got off Adventure Express w my mom and my dad was in line for flight commander. I was like seven so I don’t remember a whole lot I just remember my dad saying we were going home and for some reason I remembered it being the adventure express that someone died on until I was much older. But we were visiting friends in Kentucky and we were supposed to be at Kings Island for like three days and it happened on the first day of our trip. It flipped my mom out so bad she still does not ride roller coasters and refuses to visit Kings Island even to this day.

I lived in Cincinnati from late 1990 to early 1994, and I remember "Black Sunday" dominating conversations for months afterward. It actually happened just 3 weeks before my family spent a day at King's Island. I was only eight years old at the time, and, needless to say, my parents heavily emphasized safety during that trip! I didn't hear all the details, just that some people got electrocuted by some water, and a lady who had been drinking falling out of a ride and dying of her injuries.

It's one of the oldest parks still in continuous operation. It dates to like 1971 and, before that, there was another park there called "Coney Island." So, it has a very long history...with some tragedies mixed in there. No more dangerous than any other park of its type.

Hey love your videos but I want to mention one thing, as a person who has done extensive research on this subject the fountain accident actually occurred when one of the men’s hats was blown into the fountain. He then tried to retrieve it but got electrocuted, the park employee tried to save him but then also got electrocuted. The fountain was never actually touched because the only fountain in the lake was in the middle of the pond. I found the website you found your information from but that website was a ghost story website so the information was most likely changed to make a more interesting story. But anyway just wanted to say that and really enjoy your videos.

And, yes, in order to get electrocuted, there must be somewhere for the electricity to flow TO. Maybe the bridge itself was wet, as were their shoes? And a water pump should not have enough current to cause someone to convulse, unless it is some large industrial model, in which case a "cut off" should be part of the unit.

I was there in about 1975. I was on a ride called (maybe?) the Caterpillar. It spun around quickly while on a small roller coaster circular track. Mid ride, my seat belt came undone. There was no door to the ride, only an open entryway. I tried my best to grab something, but I was only one person away from the open space. I was quickly sliding to the open space, screaming for them to stop the ride, when a man grabbed my arm and held me with all his strength until it stopped….I will never forget that day. I was 13 then, and now I am 61.

"The park stopped selling alcohol." HA! I wish. I worked there for several seasons a few years ago. Not only are there several places to buy alcohol, including near the biggest rides in the park, but there is also a special event that is specifically about trying out different alcohols (I think craft beers or something) that I had the misfortune of working one night. We got drunk guests all the time, people trying to get in line with cups of beer (literally) filled to the brim, and often vomiting. Guests aren't allowed in line with alcohol, so we'd tell them to get rid of it in some way. Most often, they chug it so as not to waste their money. Obviously, this would either further their intoxication or make them vomit later on. I know they sell it for more money, but it's really stupid to sell alcohol at a place that requires attention for the safety of yourself and others.

@@jack1701e Intamin is known for taking great risks, and they've made many world's firsts. They had the first ever coaster over 300 feet, and are the only manufacturer to have ever made coasters over 400 feet. They've also made the first hydraulic launch coaster, which can accelerate at insane speeds. Granted, taking risks means that bad things will happen. And happen they did. Remember the first hydraulic launch coaster? The cable that pulled the train snapped, severely injuring the passengers at the front row. Hard video to watch. Nowadays they've been trying to get that past aside, and they've been more careful these days. It's thought that Intamin's reputation still hurts them to this day though, especially compared to a company like Bolliger & Mabillard, another coaster manufacturer, which has a spotless safety record.

Kings Island, an easy drive down I71, was a summertime staple when I was a kid. The Beast is one of the greatest rollercoasters ever made. I was certain this video was going to feature The Son of Beast, a wooden rollercoaster with a loop that was always breaking down, or The Bat, an under-rail rollercoaster that always made me wonder if I was going to live to see the end of the ride. The Bat only lasted a few seasons before it was removed, but if I'm remembering correctly, the facade to the maze queue for it remained for some time afterwards. We thought it was haunted.

I remember The Bat TV adverts on Cincinnati television. You are right. The creepy haunted house type wooden covering for The Bat entrance stayed up for several years after that. Went there as a class trip from a middle school in Bloomington Indiana... I remember having to step on a classmates' foot to keep him in his seat as he started to slide in between his shoulder bar,it came down in a U shape over our heads,I think it was called The Viper,or something like that...he was a little guy in size,I want to say his name is/was Bo,but not 100% about that.he asked me not to tell the rest of the class that he started to cry out of fear that he almost fell,I never did.you see,the ride went upside down several times,I had to keep him in his seat for the whole thing. I worked at King's Island when this all happened. I was tech crew on the Ice Show in the Festhaus, right across from where the fountain was. I just happened to have a rare day off on the day that this occurred. I still remember the somber feeling across the park when I returned to work the next day. Interestingly, there was another serious accident in our show in the post season that same year that has never been reported or published. We used "Flying by Foy" aerial systems in our ice show and one of our female skaters was executing a spin while "flying" high above the ice when her lead cable snapped. She dropped to the ice, breaking her leg and suffering a neck injury. An investigation found that a persistent water drip over the backstage area, caused from the condensation in the building, had resulted in corrosion of the lead steel cable over time. The skater was a friend of mine and recovered well, even going back to skating. However, it was a very scary incident.

During a trip there in the 80's a thunderstorm came up quickly. As we were headed to the arcade for cover a large ball of lightening struck two men in front of us. Our hair stood up due to the lightening, we felt a slight quiver of shock. The two men immediately went down. A gal from a candy shop jumped into action performing CPR. I was young, visiting with my teen sisters. A friend of ours was an emt that worked at the park, he was there on "black Sunday". He said that poor girl was a horrible mess. He was also there the day of the lightening strike, one of the men died. 😔 It is something we will never forget. I have three sisters, we all became nurses.

I used to work at KI during the summer in high school. We were allowed to ride for one hour after close every night, and we used to take turns riding Beast alone at night. The best place to sit was in the very back seat of the last car. It was so eerie seeing a completely empty train in front of you for the whole ride, and it also created a feeling that someone or something was behind you the whole way up the second lift hill; and you would just get whipped around in the climactic dual tunnels. It was so awesome and 30 years later I'd still love to do it again, but solo rides are pretty much impossible for non employees of the park.

I went on a ride similar to Taylor’s once when I was 8 (but there weren’t any of those shoulder-things, only a seatbelt, and you couldn’t make it turn upside down). So essentially, after my classes at school ended, my parents had to retake their citizenship test (which took a few hours). My sister and I were well behaved during that time and there happened to be one of those moving carnival/amusement parks nearby and there was discount on rides so we decided to go. After going on some rides, I saw the ride that was pretty similar to Taylor’s and it looked fun, so I asked my parents and if I could go. They decided to let me go on it (but my sister couldn’t since she wasn’t tall enough) and so on it alone I went. The moment the ride started spinning after going up, I immediately slid over from the inner seat where I was sitting to the outer seat (I think I was underweight for an 8 yo) and got a glimpse of the park from up high. I panicked and immediately grabbed onto the seatbelt. Idk if this was 8 yo me over-imagining or being dramatic, but I felt like if I let go of the seatbelt, I could have fallen. And so I essentially spent the rest of the ride holding onto the seatbelt and waiting for it to be over. When it was over, I think I got off as fast as I could and ran over to my parents and they asked if I liked it. I said yes because I didn’t want them to scold me because I was the one who decided to go on it. I was pretty traumatized for a while and I don’t think I’m ever going on those types of rides alone.

I'm sure it will be on part 2, but my dad was there the night the kid fell from the effel tower. It was during their graduation night celebration that KI used to do when it happened. He didn't see the kid fall, just saw the the tower was closed off. The kid was drunk obviously, and somehow found a way inside the elevator shaft and started climbing, the counterweight from the elevator knocked him off.

Ive worked here quite a few years doing airbrush shirts/ face painting. It’s common knowledge throughout workers that the park is haunted, night guards claim to see ghosts all the time and even do their own ghost tours. We aren’t allowed to talk to talk to guests about anything related to these events or suggest that the park is haunted

@@miaforte5836 i was actually the security supervisorthat started the "NightWalkers" tours. I was told by management not to call them ghost-walks. After about 20 plus tours, we were told that we were not allowed to do them anymore, as it got to Cedar Fair management that we had photos, videos and audio recordings of paranormal activity, on top of that many eye witness accounts of activity from off-duty police officers that also went with us on the tours. I am working on putting the information together.

I’m from Cincinnati, and was nine years old when this happened. I’ve ridden Flight Commander, and stood on the very bridge those guys fell off. I had no idea the first guy reached over the railing and was electrocuted by the water from the bubbling fountain. I always wondered how the first guy fell in… crazy stuff. I also was unaware that a third person went into the drink and survived. Wild.

I was listening with baited breath to the list of casualties- I wanted Robertson to be the one to live so bad... not that he deserved it more than anyone else, of course, but he was the youngest, and he was working, and had jumped in to help. I think his death makes me the saddest.

I grew up going to King's Island, many good memories of the park. These tragedies took place before I was born, so I've only heard about this day. I never knew the details of it until you covered it here! I appreciate your straightfoward narration, without the frills or unneccessary speculation, and always get excited when I see a new video.

I can see the family suing the ride manufacturer, the restraints weren’t foolproof. But suing the park for serving her? She chose to drink. She assumed the risk. Personal responsibility has to figure in somewhere.

Sorry but how was she to assume any risk here? The park served her alcohol and made no effort to warn the guests that drinking alcohol and going on a ride would lead to their deaths because of inadequate safety equipment and procedure? The park also didn't bother with the 2nd rider, despite being something that the ride manufacturer specified was essential to rider safety.

Don't worry, it's an exceedingly rare type of incident. About as rare as getting sucked by the quicksands. There are circuit breakers shutting off electric devices instantly, on everything, nowadays. The most exposed are electricians who don't respect the basic protocols of safety...

When this happened when I was a kid, I started dipping a toe in pools before getting in. I figured if it was electrified I’d fall outside the pool and be sore, but fine. I remembered I did that because of an incident at a theme park, but didn’t remember the specifics until this video. I also have a hard time taking a shower during a thunderstorm too because I’m afraid of the risk of electrocution and I was glad when landlines went out of style because I hated using those in a storm too for fear I’d get a shock to the head. So maybe I’ve just always had a phobia about unusual ways to get electrocuted.

I rode the flight commander as a kid. There were no restraints. You had to hold yourself in with your legs on a t-bar. I was terrified smarter my first barrel roll.

Honestly, it shouldn't have been a problem.... but there is no way they didn't know she was drunk. But that wasn't the operator's fault, you sell alcohol and guests will get drunk. I am sure there was no policy to prevent themnto get in the ride.

Most rides like that have a “single rider line” to pull from to put with odd number groups. But if the ride isn’t full, they let them ride alone. Considering that it happened late at night, crowds and lines would have been much smaller, less need for every seat to be filled. Can’t blame the park on this one.

As a kings island worker you got most of your points correct. A little fun fact, in the pond where the incident happened they added fish as a result in the pond. While an electrocution happening in a pond now due to technological advances being rare if these fish ever all go belly up they will know why. Kings island being the deadliest non Disney park has really got the short straw in all of this. Most of these incidents were freak accidents and will never happen again due to a couple of reasons. While they now have alcohol limits at the park and beers being upwards of 10$ a piece I don’t think this will happen again. As far as the flight commander incident, amusement rides have had great strides when it comes to safety. You have a greater chance of dying on the way to the park than inside of the park. All in all these were two freak accidents that could’ve been avoided and will always be a reminder to us, employees of the park, that safety comes before everything.

my older brother has been to King’s Island multiple times, and despite being fairly young around the last time he went, i didn’t really have a good feeling about him going despite having gone before. Nothing bad happened to him, but after hearing about this i feel, although the place is likely safe now and likely has been for ages, incredibly happy to have my brother with me

What’s even more eerie is that King’s Island was where the bus involved in the 1988 Carrollton Bus Crash only 2 years earlier was leaving when it was involved in the horrific collision. This place seems cursed or something.
