Thank you for your recording of Our Lady. I believe she was always The Black Madonna. There are several Black Madonnas in Europe and Russia therefore, I do not understand your interpretation of her color. I viewed a KZbin video of Pauline Priest who said she is dark - black/mulatto because icons (as Orthodox Catholics ) make Icons as the saints appeared on Earth. My husband is Polish and our Beautiful Lady is dark and Jesus and saints-of the area curly hair dark like the people of the are during that time. Travel to Europe-there are hundreds of revered Black Madonnas in Europe. Our Lady the Undefeated. Go to Eritrea and Ethiopia there are amazing Catholic Churches built into the earth hundreds of Icons of all colors btw. 🙏

Thieves trying to steal her, put her in a horse cart to make a get away, the horses would not move so one soldier got angry and slashed her icons face.

If the restorers (re creators) tempera paint would not adhere; I wonder if this suggests the original image was in Encaustic, which might suggest a middle east origin?

We can't know for sure what the original icon was painted with until those three remaining scraps can be analyzed. I don't believe it has a middle eastern origin. As I say in the lecture, the panels have been carbon dated to the middle of the 13th century (roughly 1250 AD) and the panels are made of linden wood, a tree that is native to central Europe. The current conservator's opinion is the original icon may have been painted in the Orthodox countries of the Balkans.
