Tastes of this era still exist on some Amtrak trains and Preservation trains. Freshly prepared food on the rails is a special kind of dining.

God Bless the men who took care of my mother, sometimes my grandmothers and great grandmother and I on the following roads..., L&N, Southern, Western - Uncles Hugh T. Shields, Billy Hubert and Jesse Harper all of Montgomery AL., Central of Georgia, GM&O and others. The service and respect to my mom, attention to a young crazy too busy running around and loving the Road and the men who cooked and brought us that magnificent food. My God..., What a special, sweet memory of those days and just what rail travel should be. I wish it all existed again and that the Train was king of the road again. Greyhound and Trailways..., You could have done it by train.

Here in Germany, the ICE bullet train has the Bordresteraunt. A fully functional dining car any passenger can use

To be honest I was not impressed with my outings in the ICE restaurant. I was expecting much better and left underwhelmed.

Some of the restaurant cars on the Big 4 in the U.K were pretty salubrious. Railways like the LNER and the Southern offered first class on Pullman trains even the LMS had some decent offerings.in the 60s came the Metro-cammel blue Pullman D.M.U sets which offered at your seat service on routes our of London and Birmingham but these trains were a bit of a flop due to poor riding quality. As a kid I was lucky to experience B.Rs food with my dad on a train from Birmingham to london.a cooked breakfast. These day the only hot food available is with the likes of avanti on the former LMS west coast main line and on the re branded LNER formerly know as virgin east coast.the rest of it is utter bloody crap. The recently retired inter city 125 trains also offered decent food as well. And like in the USA on board dining is confined to heritage railways such as the bluebell railway along with the Belmont Pullman which operates on the main line which I'm happy to say is either steam or 1st generation deisel traction . Some heritage lines offer fish n chip specials lines such as the severn valley railway based at kidderminster and the glouster and Warwickshire rail way also have Sunday dining trains. Then of course last but no means the Shakespeare express on the former great western line out of Birmingham snow hill which runs to Stratford up on Avon providing a Sunday dinner trip serving roast beef and Yorkshire pudding with tea coffee or what ever takes your fancy.

Railroads lost money because they had full dining on trains that barely went 225 miles. Like the Congressional (was-nyp) had a full diner. why? whats the point?
