I don't really understand how historians can really buy into the "yasuke was a slave" thing. Speaking only with logic and drawing from my own experience in martial arts: you simply CAN'T learn to fight effectively in a short time if you're never been exposed to fighting before. He could not have risen that high and that fast in Oda Nobunaga's service without having previous military experience and training with weapons. You can learn to shoot a gun pretty fast, but to fight with a sword you need to basically be born to it. There is one, minor, group of historians who keep suggesting the idea that Yasuke was not a slave, but a mercenary/bodyguard in the service of the jesuits, with previous experience in warfare with muslims or christians in Africa and India, which would make much more sense than being a manservant with no weapon skills. (one of such route is followed in the excellent book: Yasuke: In search of the african samurai by Thomas Lockley). I'm seriously intrigued by what Hollywood will do. They ought to milk that "Wakanda forever" sentiment, hit the iron while it's hot. I legitimately fear that this will bend the historical truth of Yasuke's story in order to cash in those sweet virtue signaling points.

I anticipate a lot of pushback from Japan for this movie. It will be an interesting story but I doubt that the historical context will be respected and presented accurately without 21st prejudice After the massive profits made from black panther there will be more films featuring black historical characters and hero's. I ll be very surprised if the film doesn't portray yasuke as a tragic slave treated as inferior and dangerous by everyone .

It's a dilemma. If the movie is based on the real records of yasuke from the book, world people will call my ancestors such racists af. If the movie is based on the youtubers' story, Japan will become much more lovely country for all over the world but Japanese politician s will start using the story as their new dirty propaganda. Sigh.

Chykim Sanders trends can predict future activities and Hollywood doesn’t change on their stance with how to depict global Africans. Think about who makes what instead of putting the onus on us to assume they will do things differently after a century of continued marginalization, confusion, and disrespect. The individual movie could be anything, but the usual suspects have their MO.

I think the Portuguese and Jesuits lied when they say the Japanese didn't see Black people or African people before. Black people lived in Southern China, the Phillipines and South East Asia during that period. Black Indians merchants traded in China and India in the Classical era and during the Middle Age. Swahili merchants traded in China. The Japanese most have known about the Black Indians and Swahili Africans. The Japanese worshiped a Black Buddha. Yasuke wasn't very successful in the long run because his Japanese ruler lost his life and kingdom during the war in Japan.

Why don't Black America with the power, the money, make these type movies and tell the correct stories themselves? We are always behind the 8-ball criticizing and judging the "others" for telling our stories, our history. They tried to eradicate our history, our culture, our people. When we do make movies like this we do not want to support it but we are quick to criticize when others make movies about US.

You need to get the pronunciation of his name right. Just saying. Yes, he was probably originally a slave but by the time he came to Japan, an armed bodyguard to the second highest religious figure after the Pope. He wasn't considered undesirable, in fact he was released back to the Christians because he wasn't Japanese. Nothing else is known about his life after his reuniting with the Christians, there is no more reason to assume he went back to Africa, than there is to think he stayed in Japan or went to India. Yes, the Japanese were amazed to see Black people because they had no frame of reference, however the fact that he became the highest ranking foreigner in Japanese society until William Adams, shows that modern concepts of race should be kept out of the retelling of his story. Unfortunately, that didn't happen in the anime that just came out. Hopefully, they won't try to turn his story into another Last Samurai.

I love your videos and Chadwick boseman is a good actor but I'm tired of people making him be acting in every movie I don't understand why they couldn't get it African from the tribe that the man was in to play him is disrespectful to me to see African American people who are descendants of Africans but we know nothing about the history and I hate when white people make movies about Africa is disrespectful because they never do it right plus I hated that they had this African lady from Africa play Harriet Tubman she doesn't understand what it was like to be a slave in America like I don't understand we are all black but there is differences cultural differences and we must all Embrace that I'm tired of them getting one black actor and making them playing every damn movie we can get upcoming new actors to be the fresh face of movies

Very true.Hollywood akways thinks of profits so Chadwick is a safe bet like what Denzil used to be.There are other actors better suited to the Role.Winston Duke,Micheal Jay White or Idris Alba would have been better casts. As an African person I am growing tired of this tension between Africans and Black Amerikkkans online. The 2 groups have been feuding online and its fueled by some Populist Black Amerikkkan youtubers who post anti African anti immigrant rhetoric. They are the same fools who said an African actor cannot play Hariat Taubman coz she was American. Now the same idiots don't complain if a black American plays an African man that never set foot on Amerikkkan soil. Those black Amerikkkan social media commentators are Xenophobic.Tariq Nasheed is another example of a populist black Amerikkkan who gives divisive rhetoric to make Black Amerikkkans superior to other blacks, just another Xenophobe.

Look at the Black in Japan interview of the author of the book African Samurai: The True Story of Yasuke, a Legendary Black Warrior in Feudal Japan. In the interview, the author notes that Yasuke more than likely was not a slave since the priest he came with was against slavery. Also, it talks about how the color black had positive (guardians of the gods) and negative (goblins?) impressions. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3fFfWymm5Vrm8U

Its unlikely Yasuke to be a slave, but a black christian from a well off background. I must point that from a historic point of view on that time the portuguese armadas or trading ships in the Indian Ocean employed people from many nationalities, portuguese, spanish, italians, germans, christian indians from the church of St Thomas, former muslims, maybe chinese and indonesians... Slave routes where controlled by Muslim traders all east africa, and the Portuguese only possession by that time Yasuke lived was the Island of Mozambique and a small fort at Sofala. The first place was a base to rest and water ships, the second one, an attempt to have access to gold trade from today's Zimbabwe. Whatever Hollywood decides, Portugal will be portrait as the devils epitome!

*Note* On the portuguese sources... the portuguese generally referred to all of East Africa as 'Ethiopia' during the general time period inwhich Yasuke lived. When hometeam quotes them discussing 'Ethiopians' around 2:00, that's in reference to general east Africans, not the Habesha or 'Abyssinians' in specific.

For the mere fact that Yasuke became a Warrior under a Japanese ruler profoundly states the strong possibilities of not being a slave. None if the Art express such according to Japanese records.

Can we look at history before the slavery period of African peoples please. And there connections to other peoples before European involvement. There are many scholars from all over the world that paint a better picture of their historical truths before colonization. Lets go further into the past and bring out those stories as well. Please not dismissing the present video I'm just saying there is so much more. Has anyone read a book. Called Sex & race.

The point that made Yasuke interesting was not only his skincolour, size or generall attractives. Yasuke also learnt Japanese quicker than others. Which made him endearing.

This narrative is historically innacurate !!!! It's low key insulting to the legacy Africans who have such a long rich history in early Japan that is often times conveniently ignored. Yasuke is "not" the first black or only black Samurai ! In fact, Sakanouye No Tamuramaro was a damn Shogun. Interestingly many believe he was a black man who was the first man to be given the title Shogun. Yea, let's make a movie about a random soldier and ignore the existence of Colin Powell.

Bruh Chadwick should not play this role. It should be played by someone not so famous, someone most people don't already know from somewhere. That gives it a more "real" feeling like you're actually watching a movie about this man Yasuke and not a movie about some African ninja dude, played by Black Panther.

They should allow the director of the black panther to direct this movie, because I’m sure any other director won’t don’t such a movie any real justice. As a brother living in japan for 16 odd year Yasuke isn’t known by your everyday Japanese, I’ve watch many Japanese documentaries about Nobunaga and never did they mention anything about Yasuke ever. My own wife who’s Japanese never even knew of Yasuke existence. It’s as if the deliberately erased him from Japanese history.
