to pro and cons of rotating. today we know of a phenomenon called "combat fatigue" that limits the usefullness of a soldier. Normal troops can have between 50 - 100 days of fighting before burning out which makes them almost useless to the army. After this they are so stressed out they usually suffer severe PTSD and other issues, disobey orders, get very cocky and bring everyone into danger. Elite troops can go up to 200 days before being useless. Now i want to state that is TOTAL number of active combat days, not in one go. No soldier should see actual combat for more than 100 days in his entire career (with some exceptions) if you are under constant threat like verdun you burn out even quicker without pause, so the rotation system wasnt a bad idea. Intelligence wise i dont see a big issue there as it was trench warfare and the basics could be covered in a briefing, its not like intelligence changed much during the fighting.

I know that you're talking about actual history, but this information caused me to think about the stories from the Halo franchise. There were many active combatants that saw not just 100 days of combat but years of combat. I can't imagine what that would do to the human psyche if we were ever faced with a conflict on that scale in real life.

A great song to react to would be "The Last Battle". Apart from it being a good song musically, the event it is about is a really fascinating and quite unique case where German Wehrmacht defectors, freed war prisoners, Austrian restistence members and American army troops fought against SS troops at castle Iter in Austria near the end of the Second World War. It's one of those stories about people preserving their humanity in a midst of madness that gives you back a bit of hope and faith in our race. As for the band's aims... I havn't read or watched interviews, but judging by what events they choose for their songs, it seems to be a combination of celebrating praisworthy acts of heroism and keeping memory alive on events that should never be forgotten so that we'll never repeat the horrors of the past, like this song about Verdun.

To quote another song by a different band "Do you know who's paying the costs? The little soldier he is lost". I like songs that tell it like it is/was, and I love their attention to detail (Sabaton) and that they don't shy away from depicting any side of the conflicts.

For the trap the French laud on Fort Douaumont, ti almost remibds you of the lack of supplies in any kind of war I'm gonna tie this with two other Sabaton songs that feature one man: "Carolus Rex" and "Return of the King" talking about Carolus Rex of Sweden who led his men ibto Russia, only for them to starve It really reminds you that during any period, war is the same Woth spears, to swords, to cavalry charges, to gunpowder, to napoleonic warfare, to tanks, to modern warfare, the difficulties in war are always the same

You can find the pronunciation for ‘sabaton’ on most decent online dictionaries. The IPA spelling is roughly /ˈsæbəˌtɒn/ -it's a piece at the foot section of a suit of armour. It comes from the Provençal dialect of the Occitan language (in or around the 1300s), but having been incorporated into English for such a long time reflects that phonetically. For some reason, some erroneously over-correct the word with an attempt at a French-influenced pronunciation.

I was out of school by the time I discovered a love affair for history. (It was David McCullough's "1776" that exposed me to history in a way that had never happened before. I've since become infatuated with colonial American history) Being an old school metal head, finding a band who's entire content was military history created an instant fan. I've loved listening to Sabaton for over a decade now, and will be seeing them live for the first time this fall. Thank you Mr. Terry for doing the tiresome and thankless work of bringing history to your students. Hopefully this niche Swedish metal band can inspire you to approach the subject in new ways with your students that brings it into vivid focus for them as well. Cheers!

Another good part from the Price of a Mile about the lack of glory in these battles was "roads and houses are long gone, still no glory has been won" - they really do have lyrics to the point, conveying the horrors of war, but also pointing out heroic acts.

speaking of the war to end all wars, they have a song like that too. "The war to end all wars", from the new album "The great war", which, as the name suggests, is a concept album on WW1. To answer some questions from the previous Sabaton video: you are saying the name correctly. They are always like that. All their songs are history related. They are fairly known in the metal world - even have their own Sabaton Open Air festival in Sweden. They are not rich-rich, but if I had to guess, they do alright AND they work with collaborators. They have been part of military parades (Pilsen 2019) and have been awarded awards by military personnel of multiple countries (Brazil, Czech Republic) for their contribution and awareness brought to their respective histories. Also, they have a tank.

As song about the Mill of the Meuse, also known as Verdun, and you watched the video which provided a bit on the Battle's history. One of the longest battles in history, certainly the longest in the war, a battle that didn't let up until the two bloodiest battles of that war happened and forced the Germans to place their resources elsewhere: The Brusilov Offensive and the Somme. Hell on Earth only begins to describe it, especially as there is a video or two here on KZbin, only five minutes long, that simulates just what the soldiers experienced with the artillery barrages.

When you mentioned that in the great war there were a lot of casualties but very little ground made my thoughts went straight to Sabatons song The Price of a Mile. That song is exactly about that and about a specific battle in the great war that also cost a lot of lives but gained very little ground for it. Cliffs of Galipoli is almost the same except they sing about a position that should not even be tried to take.
