🌈 Summary
Anthony and Paul meet at an annual art show and immediately butt heads. Paul thinks Anthony is living a sinful life while Anthony tells Paul he is living a lie. Paul is a reserved yet talented artist who uses art as his escape due to him trying to figure out himself and his identity. This is something that he has struggled with since his teen years. He was bought up in a very strict religious household. To escape his parents’ strict claws, he moves to a vibrant upscale city to find inspiration for his upcoming art show. While Anthony is more outgoing and outspoken. He is also more confident in his sexuality and embraces his identity. However, he is recovering from a very toxic painful breakup that involved emotional and verbal abuse, in the relationship he was forced to hide his identity and be kept a secret while being insulted and mistreated because of how confident and free he was in his sexuality.
They meet again at a pride event which Paul was curious to attend, due to such events not being welcomed or allowed in his hometown. They develop a genuine friendship and begin to learn from one another while battling their own obstacles. Paul learns how to embrace his sexuality and confront his strict religious parents while Anthony learns how to let go of past trauma and begin his healing journey.

All I can say is I was the outcast son because of who I fell in love with. I met my partner in 1974 and we coupled in ‘75. In ‘88 my mother ordered me to come home and start living a normal life. When I said NO I got disinherited. My partners family is great. Even though I lost my partner 3 years ago, at age 68, his family still considers me family and I feel blessed. I recently met someone and they’ve met him and he’s been accepted. At 76 I’m ready to begin anew. The love of my partner’s family definitely eased the hurt my family tried to place upon me. I’ve found there was no love with my blood relatives, but found love and acceptance with my partner’s family. They were more family to me than my own flesh and blood ever were.

Everyone who values their own expectations higher than the unfolding of their children's personality and/or doesn't want their children to be genuinely happy isn't a parent at all.

@@Kevynmorganeveryone who abandons or disowns their children for the mere fact of LOVING should goto the next children HOSPICE and look into the eyes of the parents there. Each one of them would happily give their eye and their arm for their children to be healthy and alive. Homophobia is disgusting in general, but against the own Kids it's inexcusable.

I was disowned when I finally came out in 1988. Not having family to visit, talk too is hard. Holidays can be even worse. Now I'm 56 soon to be 57. I say now that it's my family who has issues not me. I am always willing to listen to people who are trying to become themselves. So don't think you have to do it alone...

We're the same age. I came out to my parents when I was 16. It wasn't good, but not terrible; they're good now. They accept my partner (of 21 years) and treat him like family. His family are nightmares and we have cut them out completely after the years of abuse that he put up with...he is intellectually impaired and always a target for his drunken ex-father's wrath as a child. I agree, the problem is with the family, not us.

40% of all homeless youth 25 and younger are gay. Our society has a problem. Self Righteous Parents like the ones in the story are all too common. I'm glad that his sister finally came around. Great story!

These closed minded Christians keep saying being gay is unnatural….but what is more unnatural loving someone of the same gender or abandoning your own flesh and blood because of it? It has and will always be unforgivable to abandon your child. ❤🌈🏳️‍🌈

Many parents feel their children are only a reflection of themselves, and try to turn their children into duplicates of the lives they have chosen. They do not accept that children need to live their own lives, separate from their parents, and make their own choices.

I was given an ultimatum with my bi sexual partner. I texted my parents about staying overnight with my partner's house. They gave me the ultimatum that if I spend the overnight, I wouldn't be able to come home. So, I just left. The parents tried to backtrack and forgive me so I could live with my parents. I told them that they need to stand by their word. I never went back. Typing this out, I was pretty bad ass

The title sums up my first relationship. He was a fellow motocross racer who was openly very homophobic, and only when he found out that I had a sweet deal for bike parts (we raced the same brand of bike) did he suddenly become "gay", but only when he needed something. This went on for a while until I finally kicked him out for refusing to help with the bills (while buying very expensive accessories for his truck.) As my late father put it, he was "Gay when it was convenient" to whatever he wanted. My dad always knew about me, and was very unhappy, because I would never open up to him about my sexuality. I had to find out from mom two years after he died about how much he was hurting, worried about ME, and just wanting me to have a happy life regardless of who I slept with. I am now 60 and still feel the pain from never being open with my dad, who loved me unconditionally.

I am very fortunate to have had loving parents. It is inconceivable to me that any parent could disown their child because that child didn't satisfy their own belief. I know it happens, and my heart goes out to anyone who has been cast out by their family.

Wonderful story! I'm a lesbian christian and I think it's terrible that a pastor would disown his own son. What a bad example for the church to see. Dispicable. Shameful. Christians really get a bad reputation since so many are like that. I tend to not tell people I'm a Christian until after they get to know me, so that they don't judge me and assume I'm a judgemental conservative christian.

No I don’t agree with Parents disowning their children, if however when a child grows up they find the person that’s there has no common ground with them then perhaps it’s best to accept/ love the person for what they are have distance and try and support when needed. Distance & time can allow that person to live their life as they wish to and sometimes the parents can see and accept what’s blossoming before them.

I do not understand the parents, and hopefully for their own sake come to peace with it. On the flip side the parents have to live their truth also. So he will be better without them at least for now, and maybe always. Family the ones who should always have your back, I have found out the hard way only want to have your back when they can control your life. When they should control their own.

I love these stories, while this one has a lot of truth in it. The reaction of the protagonist to losing his family isn’t realistic. If family is important as he claims in the beginning losing his family would be very difficult. I have experienced this story for myself. I have spent years over coming the grief of loss and untangling my upbringing from who I am now. It’s a cute story with a happy ending but definitely not realistic.

The truly evil part is children learn early they can't trust their parents. I knew pretty young that I liked boys better than girls. My Parents never lied and told me they would love me no matter what, and they never did, especially the "womb," but lots do and go around talking about how much they hate gays, how disgusting they are, and what they think should be done to them. The kids figure out who they are talking about and then figure out that's them and how mom and dad really feel about them. They like boys or girls, and Mom and Dad hate them for being that way, so they hate me. Trust me. I can't be that unique that it would occur to me and not them too. When I was 8, there was a tv show about an ex-special forces man turned private eye whose cover was a male model. I couldn't stop thinking about him. He was muscular and beautiful to me. He was fooling around with a prop gun loaded with blanks, put it close to his head, and pulled the trigger. Something in the blanks hit him and killed him. I cried when I found out and was depressed for days.
