Hi, i am an Amsterdamse and I totally get your frustration with the rubbish. We locals have the same frustration. That said, I recommend exploring a bit outside the city centre. And especially when it comes to restaurants, don't eat in the city centre. Next time you come here, if there is going to be a next time, hit me up. I would love to take you to some better places. And also consider Haarlem, Utrecht and Breda, less tourist /rubbish and just as pretty. Happy travels! 🚐👭🐾

Yeah I would always recommend avoiding the tourist hotspots. Venice has similar problems to Amsterdam clearly. Absolutely trashed by tourists and a local system that can't seem to cope with the disrespect from visitors. It's such a shame that people can be so disrespectable but they probably treat their home towns in the same way.

As always, a good video, ladies and very honest. My wife was in Amsterdam nearly 20 years ago and she says it was much better then. But Amsterdam has always had tourists so not sure it's wise to just blame them - and the campsite (where there are loads of tourists) looked immaculate. As you point out at the end, it's residents too. The only thing I can think of that's changed in the last couple of decades is COVID (which may affect cleanup costs) and rampant, uncontrolled immigration - like some of the other cities you mention. Just saying. Looking forward to the next one - the planned route looks great.

@@campervibe I am sorry for your experience, but yes, you were informed right. Hope you have enjoyed the candy, although it was expensive....and you ended up in a touristic candy shop. Our mayor is very aware of this problem and there are more plans to change things around here, to attract other kinds of tourists and less tourists. We, locals, feel already for years that our centre has been 'sold' to the tourists. It has taken the soul out, you are right about that. Amsterdam has digged its own grave basically. It has allowed too much for far too long. We live in the outskirts and I know the place inside and out having worked there in the hospitality business for years. There are little locals left as the housing has become unaffordable. There are many places to go to where you will see a different side of the city, you just need to know where to go. But you are right, it's not what it has been. I have a love hate relationship with the place. There are changes coming as indeed new rules and regulations are imminent but it takes a while to notice differences. There is a way to have a clean city practically over night - double the cleaning crews . It’s a well documented fact that people are much more likely to toss trash if there is already trash there , The second part of this would be doubling or quadrupling the fine for littering ( to help offset the wages for the extra cleaning crews ). And then finish off with a public awareness blitz - starting w bill boards / notices at the airport / have competitions where you post pics or vids or people dropping litter ( public shaming works ) or having features of before and after streets - the cleanest street award this week goes to ….. This would not be difficult - as other commenters have said thier memories of the city was that it was very clean so this is a recent phenomenon making it much easier to remedy . But truth be told this vlog has made me think I will give Amsterdam a miss on my next trip to that area of the world .

Trouble is that were you to see anyone throwing down this junk, and had the temerity to tell them to pick it up, you'd get a ton of abuse and/or even violent retribution. During WW2, there were some evacuees that came to our small Suffolk village. One or two started to throw down their rubbish and the local children pointed it out and said, "Hey, pick that up. We don't do that around here!" They dutifully picked it up and there was not much of a problem afterwards. It had just become a consequenceless habit that they had not been called out on before and had just been societal, where and when they were brought up.

Yeah it’s hard now a days for sure to say something to some people I think you have to judge it and go with your gut, it would be great to be able to say something to all people but some you just can’t trust don’t have a knife or would do something outrageous!

@@campervibe I think that the only 'weapon' I'd have on hand on a daily basis would be a Point-Of-View gun. Point and press and all the negative feelings, the sorrow and disgust as to how the street had just become a tip and a rat fest would be transmitted. I do wonder if these people just accept that places become like this, that there's an inevitability to it. A "well people create rubbish. So what?" attitude.

One sad reality is rates are paid to Councils to maintain streets and road. You may recall council staff cleaning streets, picking up rubbish, emptying rubbish bins, maintaining their city as they are paid to do. One problem that is now quite common in the UK and what you see in amsterdam is the product of councils reducing the number of street rubbish bins, public toilets, and generally maintaining the streets. Yes agreed, people shouldn’t litter, most dont, however when there are bins missing or not emptied and are chocka block full, you see litter. Please highlight to Councils they need to maintain their cities or it will become very run down.

We had a similar experience in Berlin. It’s a great city but it was covered with dog toffee. When we spoke to the hotel staff they said taxes were very high following the wall coming down. The residents were so annoyed about the taxes they refused to clean up after their dogs! The people were lovely though.

If they didn't have rubbish everywhere and a stinking weed problem it would be a lovely place to visit. I wouldn't go there for free unless things changed big time. So important that you show things for real. Emily, you really do a great Anneka Rice impression. Looking forward to more vlogs from you two, and take care.

As others have said I am sure, I visited a number of years ago... 3 times in fact as I loved it so much (one was a conference). It was not like that, I remember the early mornings, with the street cleaners washing the streets! Such a shame, but glad of your vlog. Shame what was a vibrant and historical city has been run down. All the museums (especially loved the cat museum) and architecture was a dream. Happy travels to you both.

A great video Ladies, always keeping it real. Sometimes it's best to show a place in its truest form, it's a pity though, as the architecture is stunning. Not very pleasant for you both, or the locals. Stay safe, I reckon, Emily has an air fryer in that bag. 😂😂❤️😊

Gosh, I didnt realise it had got that bad. Bill & Ben the flower pot men where so happy, but now its all about weed. As your going up to Norway, which I must say is a beautiful place, people are just so lovely. I stayed beside the fyords. Just be aware that its very expensive, so Emily if needing any snacks, best get that before you go, or anything else. Their wages reflect their prices. Loving your vlogs. Take care Ladies, till the next one.

I'm going to mention the litter, cuz I'm like Louise. Looks a wonderful place apart from you know what. You do love the big share bags for 1 don't you Emily haha, looked tasty 😋 Good idea getting up to Norway ASAP. It's an awesome place and so much to see and explore, lots of stopping and admiring. Have a wonderful adventure both. All the best 👍

I was there in 2018, and I wasn’t fond of the vibe or the trash. It was harrowing trying to avoid w/ all the bikes, cars, and scooters (like Paris). We were on a bus tour and at one point these little ladies w us were being stalked through a narrow alleyway by some shady dude who felt very dangerous. I didn’t feel comfortable or relaxed there. The o KT respite was the boat ride in the canal. That was the best part, for sure. I feel for the locals dealing w all of the tourons…

Last time we was there 2012 it was such a pretty place. Very clean. No litter on the streets. No full English apart from one place. Such a shame its changed. Oh and as an Essex girl who lived South Benfleet , i loved Southend. Spent most weekenda there. Worked there as well

I used to go most weekends in the 90s and early 2000s. Was lovely then. Gone downhill like many French, German, British and Dutch cities since then.
