Personally - the ambiguity that comes from using your items & tools, and anxiety that's embedded with it as you internally judge what option's best to use at any given situation, weighing in not only your resources and ammo, but especially trying to do your best to judge whether the Alien has adapted to certain items or not, is one of the main things that not only sold me on the game, but insured my obsession with it and dictated my playstyle going forward. But with that came alot of experience, which allowed me to see where your slight criticism of that aspect of the game (in that it makes the game a bit too easy) comes from. While personally it is largely resolved on Nightmare, I did experience the same issue on all the other difficulties, and I came to this conclusion: Both ammo/resource scarcity and Alien's adaptability are overly held back on difficulties below Nightmare, making the game too "generous", while one quirk of Alien's behavior hurts the game on all difficulties - inability to hear walking pace from the vents. Lacking resource scarcity not only takes away from the management of it, but gives the player too many options (or makes it too easy to replenish them), while Alien not adapting fast enough means the player is less likely to get punished for overreliance and be negated certain tactic, which simply dilutes the tension. As for the "quirk", well, it is also rather simple - it makes simply walking to your destination too safe, if not slightly overpowered? Running is obviously rather situational, because enemies can hear that from afar and consistently, while crouching is completely silent, but very slow, with the risk being that you'll get seen by simply being caught up to as you're trying to quietly crouch your way to another place. Walking, in theory, is just another situational alternative, that is slower, but less loud than running, but still detectable from a decent distance + because of your higher profile. And it is true for anything that is on the ground, but when the Alien vents, it just becomes utterly deaf to it, turning the balance on its head, rendering crouching meaningless. And that's without even mentioning silent walking exploit, whose existence I utterly despise.

Great question, headphones are essential because the audio is highly atmospheric. You can also attempt to complete the game without gadgets, forcing you to rely on raw stealth and your surroundings. The more immersive, the better! ;P
