I'm aware of the church battling kings, heretic sects, and godless governments. But the Catholic laity battling the church itself (not merely bad priests, but, bishops and Holy See) doesn't seem to have a precedent.

Modernism is a pretty unique form of heresy because it's proponents don't want to leave and start their own church or sect, but would rather remain in the Church and try to slowly advance their agenda(s) until they gain full (or majority) control. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin is a great example; and instead of being rightly and uniformly decried by all catholics as a heretic, some today are even tossing around the idea of naming him as a doctor of the church... Pope Pius X perhaps said it best in his 1907 encyclical Pascendi Dominici gregis when he condemned modernism as " *the synthesis of all heresies* ".

Novus Ordites are not, "orthodox " Catholics. They are neo-conservatives, which presents a different entity. Novus Ordoism does not encourage nor cultivates, orthodoxy. In fact, the very opposite holds true. Neo conservatives go along with the post Conciliar changes, albeit at a slower pace.
