Major kudos to Cliff Robertson, for not only researching his character intensely, but also for researching 1847 history. As testament to his meticulous acting skills, he'd later win an Oscar for his work as the eponymous character in "Charly."

And hey, Buzz Kulik! I know the name for example of Gunsmoke; honest, adult, realistic, and John Wayne hopes he was in. In the series, that is. Kulik was a big name in an entire movement for more believable drama, and it's exactly for the kind of thought for realism like here.

Thanks for this informative breakdown, and the whole series for that matter. Being older than you, I associate Cliff Robertson with the 1969 move _Charly._ He plays a mentally challenged man in a science fiction work based on the award-winning story _Flowers for Algernon._ Yes, I saw him as Uncle Ben too, but for me _Charly_ is the more memorable role.

its interesting because when you think of a time travel story you think of someone in the current year the story is written in being the time traveler, but instead we have someone from a past time period travelling in time. Also, time travel stories rarely have an actual plot beyond...well, the time travel, and sometimes the time travel is merely the character using a machine (by accident or on pupose) or via magic, if it's explained at all, and rarely do they have a purpose beyond that.
@mrcheaterson3 жыл бұрын
One of the thing that makes the twilight zone stick out for me it the genuine unpredictability of the endings. There's as much of a chance for a happy ending as a bad and it really adds to the suspense knowing it could swing either way instead of always going dark at the last second.

Gotta give credit to how much discussion and dedication was given to the role of a character's portrail alone in a single episode. It goes to show how much passion and care they took with each one. Even the one's that Didn't work. Guess that's why this is considered such a timeless series.

Will Walter dress up as Rod Serling for Halloween?
@jamesgarrett88333 жыл бұрын
As awesome as that would be. Walter pretty much does that for the episodes of The Twilight Tober Zone where he and his friends film a segment. He dress in a suit Rod Serling wore in the 60s, matching his hair to Serling’s and also filming the segments in black & white I say he imitating more of Rod Serling. So for Halloween Walter should dress up as one of the iconic monsters from the TZ. Like the humanoid alien from To Serve Man, the beautiful people from Eye of the Beholder or the three eye alien from Venus

Cliff Robertson is an underrated actor to star in the Twilight Zone, but man did he leave his impact on not one but two great installments in the series and "Hundred Yards Over The Rim" is one of them. You really feel for his character and the situation he finds himself in when he's sent into the future. I also love how Robertson is able to stand along such acting giants such as Edward Platt (the chief from Get Smart) and the original Gomez Addams himself John Astin.
@jamesrav2 жыл бұрын
I especially like this episode for the simple reason that it shows a calendar displaying September 1961, which was the year I was born. I distinctly remember the 1st time I saw the episode and noticed it - definitely caught me by surprise. Sometime during the filming or shortly thereafter I came into existence. Or did I ? Maybe it's just there to convince me of that. The 1st video I saw on the idea that we are living in a simulation opened with the idea that there is no 'real' past, it's just an illusion in our mind. Now that's an idea worthy of the Twilight Zone.

What I love about this episode is it feeds into this narrative that history is set, certain things need to happen (or not happen), and that the universe will bend itself out of the natural order just to make sure that moment happens the way it should. So many crazy examples in war time alone, but radically life altering events that should have occured but, by some *AMAZING* stretch of luck, did not, that could have fundamentally altered all life as we know it, today.

This is one I appreciate more for the look and feel of it than for the story itself. It's only season two and already Twilight Zone has done time travel so many different ways; in fact, this bears a strong resemblance to "The Last Flight." However, I do feel it manages to differentiate itself, principally in its visuals. The image of Cliff Horn dwarfed by the sublime immensity of the mountain landscape and centered in frame as he walks towards the horizon is stunning; it's not as instantly recognizable as some of the other TZ iconography (the Maple St. sign post, the pig-nosed doctors, etc.), but it's still really appealing and impactful. I really love any episode where they were able to shoot on location; when combined with the black and white, it creates a stark beauty and that's especially the case here. Back to the story, the major difference between this and "Flight" is Chris is sent by whatever force the Twilight Zone is to get something he needed (compared with Lt. Decker whose journey into the future seemed like an accident) and we end on an optimistic note. That's it. I'd say the two are rather similar, perhaps too similar for my liking. I'm afraid that the episode plays a lot of the same notes as its predecessor and wastes a few precious opportunities to make itself stand out uniquely. It would've been great to see Chris react to finding his son in the encyclopedia and learning about the impact he'd have on history; alas, it occurs off-camera. What saves the episode is Cliff Robertson's performance, he really brings Chris Horn to life with a convincing mix of befuddlement and fear over his situation. I love the details about how dedicated Robertson was about creating the character, talk about getting invested. I also thought that the top hat was an odd choice, but I felt there must've been an explanation for it. I was pleased to learn my misgivings were misplaced and that there was a good reason behind it. I have to admit a slight embarrassment: I always misread the title as "A Hundred *Years* Over the Rim." When Walter spoke the name at 5:04, I did a double-take. I actually think "Years" makes for a better, more poetic title, even if "Yards" makes more sense. It doesn't change the episode, just my two cents. I think this one plays it too safe with the story. It has what I'd call a slightly rose-tinted, 20th Century view on American Frontier history. The ending especially seems pleased to tacitly (or even explicitly) give a pat on the back to Westward Expansion. It seems to say, "yes it was hard, but we have all the nice things of today because of our noble, sacrificing predecessors." This is despite the fact that Chris repeatedly mentions the tension with Native Americans throughout. Still, I might be being too hard on Rod Serling as writer here. At its core, this is commemorating pioneers, appreciating the hard journey our ancestors took, and recognizing the lengths parents will go for their children; it could easily be the story of immigrants coming to America. Regardless, I think it's the visuals and the acting that really make this one worth coming back for.
