When Simbu was stuck in a Beep Song controversy, there was so much of negativity around and at that time, ARR told GVM that they should release a small version of of AYM's Thallipogathey song tune to change the negativity being spread as he felt it would affect the film and GVM agreed to that suggestion. Just instantly, after that tune was released, the entire world moved over from Beep song and started humming that Thallipogathey tune. THIS is ARR's magic. He is isn't just a musician. I guess it has to do with the lyrics, a song could bore us out easily when we memorise the lyrics completely. ARR and IlayaRaja were very fortunate to have such legendary poets like Kanadasan, Vairamuthu and Thamarai, that they were able to give us such ever green songs till date. Those lyrics were hard to memorise easily so we tend to revisit to get hold of the lyrics again and again. Anirudh on the other hand had lyrics for his songs that was so colloquial in nature. We were able to memorise Selfie pulla so easiy that we did not revisit it more often. While the same Anirudh gave us a masterpiece called Neeyum Naanum from Nanum rowdy that was written by Thamarai which still sounds so poetic, we tend to revisit the song and try to get hold of the lyrics thus making it an evergreen.

Music is a very subjective art form. Staying as a top most music director in their own language itself is hard enough. Rahman has done this in kollywood , Bollywood and somewhat in Hollywood. No one has been able to replicate that even today . Rahman is doing that from CD days. For each individual there might be a favourite music director but no one can deny the fact that Rahman has covered most audience in India probably in the world.

Raja was 100% international. Check out the kind of "international" film music from that time. If anything Raja was imo even better than the best "international" dude of that time. Raja at his peak was a musical genius on par with Mozart, Bach, Thyagarajan -- that pantheon. True his sound quality was a bit lacking but he absolutely could nail jazz, disco, krautrock and more. So no, I disagree with Raja not sounding international. Oscars, Emmys etc aren't necessarily a reflection of greatness -- at least not the only criteria.

People after Rahman era judges a song by how catchy a melody is, how sound is crisp and clear and how songs with rhythmic bass. People love sound more than the music. Nobody judges a song by how finesse and rich it was now-a-days. Young generation should learn that kind of musical appreciation.

@@monkeonthee I completely agree with you. I meant rhythmic bass only in terms of sound quality and catchy alignment with the beat. When it comes to the bassline, Raja is the GOAT. Speaking of time signatures, Raja has composed beautiful melodies in odd time signatures. No one can come close to Raja in that aspect.
