I was fishing for bluegill this morning using a yellow popper, the sound of them suckin the fly off the surface is special. The lake is a township preserve, there’s lots of deep weeds and reeds just outside the beds, if they get into that you usually lose them but maybe not. There’s no redears in that little lake, but the bluegill are a blast👍

Rock Bass are probably the strongest fighter pound for pound,and also my favorite fish to eat in freshwater. They're not as numerous in my local area anymore,but about 40yrs ago I could get stringers upon stringer of 10-11-12" Rockies. I think the White Perch has wiped out a lot of the fish here. Got to thank the idiots with the PAFBC that wasn't able to tell a difference in them while stocking Striper. You should do a video testing the effects of bug spray that contains DEET has on catching fish. I heard about it sometime back in the 80's and tested it out one day and I have not used bug spray since. I won't go fishing or take anyone fishing if they bring bug spray as it will drift through the air and land on anything in it's path (and it may just be my gear it settles on) or they get it on their hands and it then transfers to anything they touch and same goes for their clothing. All I did to test this was find a spot the fish were hitting left and right and that pond is a perfect place. Spray some on my clothes and let it dry. I then touched my clothes and then acted as if I was tying on a lure/bait. Then just go about fishing and see how much it cuts back on your catching. I smoke and think that has a slight effect on them but it's no where near what DEET does to them. I also use Permithrin on my boots and clothes as it's the only thing that will kill ticks (DEET will not phase them in the slightest) and will sort of keep bugs away,but haven't seen any sort of problem with fishing. WARNING! It is very dangerous to cats in it's liquid form though.

Richard you inspire me. I love to fish and I try to go every day. I am the least patient person on the planet and that doesn't usually make for a good fisherman. But since I started watching your videos I have been inspired. When I fish I think of how patient you are and how you just take your time and it always works out. When I catch one I say ain't that a Purdy one? Let's let him go. And then I think let's catch another one....and I hear your voice e in my head saying it. And I've had so much more fun since I started doing that. I now have the patience to take my nieces and nephew fishing and teach them to be patient as well. I wa t them to love fishing the same wY I love it. You are the reason I've been able to do that. Thank you. You are my inspiration. As a result I have had more success than ever. And yesterday when I took my nephew out at 5 AM and he landed a bass that weighed just over 5 lbs on my new scales. It was a day neither of us will ever forget. And you made that possible. Omg you brought back some old memories when you said cane pool my grandma would tell grandpa I want some fish for dinner go and get your grandson and get me some fish he would get mad at me because my bluegill was bigger than his but it was a lot of fun but I think he just showed me the small ones that he had caught we would keep those too because he did a lot of catfishing

I use a 6’6” Ugly Stik for everything with 8lb Mr Crappie high vis. I also use a 5’0 ultralight creek rod. A 5 inch bluegill can put a good bend on a medium action. Inevitably a 2-5 lb catfish goes for the creek rod. 🤦‍♂️ you can catch gills on a shiny hook if they are biting. I wish we had a fishing spot like that here.

Little ponds like that are where I cut my teeth too in and around Dallas. I would just start working my away around the whole pond in a circle over and over until I was tired of catching them or it started getting too dark to fish. It's how we spent most summer days growing up.

Your videos are the greatest. We live in Minn.....but fish are fish. Have you ever done a panfish video with a bubble/or torpedo floats with wet flies or poppers? It’s a method we use when panfish are accessible in the shallows and we don’t have the fly rods with us.

Try dipping your worm in Tostito's brand Blanco cheese sauce. The fish go crazy for that stuff. I dribbled a little directly into the water, and the water boiled with fish. Amazing stuff!
