I'm surprised to hear at how many people never made it past the first world on the first game, I actually beat that game as kid several times, guess I was way better at games as a kid then I thought. I found a trick that makes the game a lot easier at least on Genesis-use your thumb to hit both the A and B buttons at the same time so that way you get the high jump with the glide.

Paws on Fire has a very interesting development history that wasn't covered here, but to put it simply, it was outsourced to Choice Provisions, makers of the indie darling Bit.Trip series. It makes a whole lot more sense knowing that Atari likely found a cheap but successful development studio and said "make it like your best selling game" hence the no effort auto runner. Though to be fair, Choice Provisions also did essentially the same thing for a League of Legends game they were making, so its hard to say the auto runner is a failing of Atari or the one trick pony style of Choice Provisions.

I can explain a few things regarding Bubsy 3D. For the controls, they pulled from Jumping Flash, which many consider to be the first 3D platformer (it's not the absolute first, but the first that was an actual game). That game had similar tank controls and was lauded as being innovative and boundary-pushing, as it predates Super Mario 64 by about 2 years. The controls aren't exactly the same, though. I daresay the controls in Jumping Flash are tighter and there's weight. It's also worth noting that the game is played in first-person. As for why it was released the way it was? Well, Michael Berlyn (creator of Bubsy and producer of Bubsy 3D) thought they were being innovative, since 3D platforming was still in its infancy at the time. It was to have fully 3D exploration. But when Nintendo showcased Super Mario 64 at the 1996 Consumer Electronics Show, he instantly knew Bubsy 3D was the inferior game. He wanted to delay the game so i could be refined and compete with SM64, but Accolade insisted on releasing the game as scheduled, as they already suck a lot of time, money, and resources into the game. To start over or delay the game would prove disasterous, so they had to make due given the circumstances. Apparently, the game was considered "average" at the time. Though, again, 3D platformers were in their infancy, so there wasn't a whole lot to compare it to.
@neoqwerty Жыл бұрын
They did recycle the 2P mode projectile control stuff for a later game after polishing it, IIRC, so Bubsy 3D wasn't a COMPLETE loss. It's just that the best mechanic they had was the most underutilized one. Also part of the issue was that they wanted HUGE levels with HUGE draw distance, and the devkit test stations had more power than the retail consoles, which led to having to remove all textures, and the levels being so barren and landmark-less. If the devkits weren't more powerful than the retail console I think they would probably have had better feature spotlighting and pruning, instead of wasting time on things that worked on the devkit and not retail. Bubsy 3D was a lot more of a tragedy than people suspect it was, it was like they got smacked with the PS1 dev exclusive version of Murphy's Law.

Fun(?)fact: Bubsy on the Genesis has a different cartridge shape than most other games on the Genesis. Not many games used this shape, but a few companies used it for one reason. The standard cartridge was part of Sega's licensing costs, which some companies, namely EA, didn't like and reverse engineered the Genesis and its cartridges to make their own games. This is kind of a sign of companies just wanting to sell a product for cheap, rather than quality. It's not exactly foolproof, but a good way to know if a Genesis game is terrible is if it has a similar cartridge to the EA games, with or without the odd yellow piece on the side.
@jadedheartsz Жыл бұрын
Yeah the Road Rash cartridges looked different as well, they had this weird yellow thing.

Another fun (?) fact: Because Accolade were cheap bastards, they published a large amount of their Genesis games without a license by reverse engineering the lockout code on the console. After Sega found out and sued them for it, Accolade filed an appeal and WON the case leading to a landmark decision that still affects companies to this very day regarding reverse-engineering. So you can thank them for that too I guess

@@AlastorAltruistGaming Because they didn't want to pay the fee for bypassing lockout and IIRC they lad legal precedent thanks to I think Game Genie fighting Nintendo for their rights to make the Game Genie a thing. Also because Sega required quality control for the license before allowing games to get to manufacture, and each re-evaluation costs money and time. You can hear GameHut talk about why the Level Select code triggers when there's an error loading a level on Flicky 3D Island, where the devs "disguised" the error trap level select code as a "secret bonus", so if the SEGA testers found a bug they'd think it was a feature and it wouldn't need another round of evaluation stalling them.

It genuinely feels like the corporations that be wanted Bubsy to be a hit, and threw way too much money at the problem, instead of anyone actually wanting these games in the first place. I am probably one of like twelve people that actually enjoy playing Bubsy 1. Partially because I learned how to control the thing (Basically always hold the glide button and don't try to constantly run). But once you do, it's a platformer that's not too bad in most ways, and somewhat enjoyable at times. And if you do progress, you even learn that the devs put in some effort with the various worlds. For example a general thing most of them got: The levels are LAYERED. You got two or three routes on every level where you regularly can swap at certain points (down is usually easier and may happen by accident). Along with that, each world got their own gimmick, too. The first world is a plain grass land from whatever 16-bit-platformer you want, with the mentioned layers (ground VS floating platforms and waterslides). Second is an amusement part (lower level is flat but got more enemies, upper level is a platform chaos on a rollercoaster you can sometimes ride). The wild west is not layered, but each level is split in two... Also, despite people claim that, in Bubsy 1, he is *NOT* chatty. He spews a one-liner every time you load (re)start level, and that's it. No mid-level-commentary.

Clearly the publishers are following the same mantra first spoken by Bubsy himself: what could possibly go wrong? And everything does.

20:38 Ive been playing Bubsy 3D you can actually start gliding without jumping by holding the triangle button I know because for the first 3 levels I knew Bubsy could glide but couldnt figure out how until I looked it up (no this is not explained in the manual either you kind of just have to figure it out if you don't look it up) im right before the second boss fight and havent had to use it outside of those fans and the first boss that said the Jump combined with the strong ledge grab make it useless during regular platforming Edit: when you want to glide on the fans you have to have his shadow be over them and the shadow is locked to right below Bubsy's feet

I might have to check out that Manta Sleep as I work the graveyard shift, its hard for me to get the required hours needed to go right back to work 12 hours later, even with a custom made mattress. I Appreciate it, Gilly.

I would ask how Bubsy is still getting games when gems like Sparkster got screwed, but I think we all know it's because of the memes.
@hamiltonappiah67595 ай бұрын
but what meme but what cause? you haters are so blinded by hatred that you don't even know about the existence of us bubsy fans and that you don't even know how to see the beauty in him, do you think you can still continue to hate something for a long time? and then sparkster like bubsy has already just had a collection of their old 16 and 32 bit games in 2024 for ps5 ps4 and Nintendo switch! you should more include aero the acrobat or cool spot in this thing you said!

I rented Bubsy for SNES so many times. Never got past the first stage and yet I loved it. I have no idea why. I think I was just charmed by the fact that you fight the enemies in a cartoony cloud of fists when you jump on them.

You can glide in Bubsy 3D by just holding the triangle button. You can even break this by holding select for a second during the glide (while still holding triangle) to get infinite jumps/height, making the glide insanely overpowered... Just don't do it over water. You'll die instantly because the game acts like you've landed for a moment and it uses the properties of the surface directly below you during the said moment.

Bubsy 3D's controls are the way they are because they're mimicking Jumping Flash. The difference is Jumping Flash, aside from being competent, was made before the Dual Analogue controller, is in 1st person, and gives you three jumps (the downward camera angle only kicks in after you jump the second time too) so all of these control decisions make sense and actually work.

I will not at all deny that Bubsy one could be on the difficult side. I do recall it being so. But it's amazing how far being a ten year old that did not have a ton of other sega genesis games and actually kind of liked the game will get you. I don't think I could beat the game if I played it again though. Older games and more current feel like they require a lot more of different skills from the other and I'm out of practice. I am so sorry you experienced Bubsy 3D though.

To be honest in my opinion i feel like Bubsy could still have a chance at Bei successful, that is if they were to make him less annoying/have him talk less or they could tone down his ego and make him more considerate and caring towards for his friends, family and pet, and instead of him taking only one hit to lose a life, they could have the yarn balls he collects work like they do in Sonic where he loses some but has a chance to collect them back, it would make sense for the yarn balls to bounce on the stage as that is what would happen if you were to drop them on the ground. They could also let him climb walls since that's what Bobcats actually can do, they could probably also let Bubsy have some kind of camouflage move to sneak past enemies for a short distance, since Bobcats also camouflage themselves to sneak on prey. And if they were to get rid of his gliding ability they could also have Bubsy jump a little bit higher instead since he's a cat and they're known jumping and pouncing, but I doubt they'd get rid of his gliding ability. Anyway these are some of the things I think could make Bubsy a more liked and successful video game character.

Agreed. I was so close to commenting bubsy two is probably the best of them and is overall not that bad of a game. It definitely improved on the first. Not saying it was great or perfect, but seemed more balanced and fair. I genuinely enjoyed it as a kid and can't say that about all the bubsy games. It's a solid platformer especially at the time.

Fun fact. In Bubsy 2 in hard floor shump level is the easiest. You see, the more hard level is the more it's complex and toughter to find the exit. But in shmup section exit hidded right at the start point. If you don't know it - you will be scanning this level very long

Fun(?) Fact about Bubsy's Devs: Pretty much everyone who worked on Bubsy hated Bubsy. When the team got around to Bubsy 2, they were so fed up with it that they got their aggression out by sticking pencils through Bubsy plushies, and were hanging them via a noose. And these were special plushies that were only given to the staff as well, so you KNOW they hated it. BumblesMcFumbles made a video talking about this, so go watch that for more context.

Bubsy 3-D doesn't even have the slight interest one gets in seeing how a new level looks, like you have in the Jaguar game, because, despite each level having a punny name and supposedlly connected visual representation of what it's about before it starts, every single level is the same barren hallway with just the occasional different placement of some platforms to jump up to or the location of a body of water that kills you. I wouldn't be half as mad as I was playing this if they gave the remotest bit of a damn while making it and just tried to make the levels actually themed in some way, as opposed to looking like an unfinished pre-alpha concept demo for every single level.

I remember watching a video covering its development and it was apparently a mess with weird demands and all sorts of problems
@SaiyanGamer95 Жыл бұрын
Actually, they did care. The issue was the team was unfamiliar with developing a 3D platformer. Michael Berlyn wanted to give the game more time after seeing Super Mario 64, but to do so would put Accolade in financial danger, due to the amount of time, money, and resources they pumped into Bubsy 3D. They were essentially between a rock and a hard place and just had to make due with the circumstances.

I can tell you the future of Bubsy right now. A developer at limited run games showed Bubsy 3D running on switch via thier carbon engine (in a now deleted tweet). Atari (who is bringing back a lot of thier old ips) now owns Bubsy. We'll probably see some form of Bubsy collection as well as a new entry later down the line.

I decided to give Bubsy 3D a chance on Duckstation and, well, the controls were as clunky as people say. It also wiped some of my save data in Crash Team Racing and Crash Bandicoot and it wouldn't let me save in Crash Bandicoot: Warped as Bubsy doesn't have memory card support. So that was fun.

I used to rent Bubsy 1 when it came out, and yeah, the criticisms are valid. But to a kid in the 90s, that rental was your whole weekend, so I kept playing it. I then rented it again another weekend in the future, and slowly but surely I got better and made progress. Eventually I knew it inside and out, collected all the extra continues and beat the whole game! And looking back, I did have fun, learning its little quirks, discovering secrets and racking up lives to counter all the deaths. Bubsy 2 was fine, made easier by the health system, bonus levels and once you figured out how best to use the power ups (such as equipping the diving suit and jumping into a body of water to find a new bonus level, or just going crazy with the nerf gun), there was some genuine fun to be had there too. Fractured Furry Tales and Bubsy 3D, though, I played years after they came out, and...yeah there's really no defending those ones, I couldn't stomach those past the first levels. Utter rubbish.
