The breathless silence at the end is so appropriate to this performance. Delayed applause can say so much in appreciation that a bunch of noise beginning before the last chord is played will ever do.

Sheer beauty in sound a real heart string tugger. When you watch the ballet 'Spartacus' the dance and the music blend perfectly if done with real passion. A love story with a very sad ending -----tears.

I am melting at your feet, Mr. Khaciaturian. I would be your slave. Everything you wrote goes right through me like an arrow and you still my heart. You must have written such music for Gods up in heaven, not for humans..too pure for the human race. And I am one of those creatures.... 5:16 is killing me.

I also loved that Tv series. I just started a new job, and had to have an operation after a skiing accident. And what was on TV? It was Onedin Line. I love this music.

The way the strings come in at 1:22 is graceful, and the build-up from 5:05 to the breathtaking moment at 5:16 is pure musical magic...

Whenever I hear *Spartacus* I associate it with the theme music of an Australian TV show called the "Onedin line" and all the hairs on my body stand to attention as I revel in the memory of the music and TV show. It's great listening every time for me thank you to Moscow City Symphony - Russian Philharmonic for sharing it with us.

Спасибо большое!... Для информации: в начале звучит концертное переложение для ф-но соло, сделанное профессором Ереванской Консерватории имени Комитаса, заслуженным артистом Армении ВИЛЛИ САРКИСЯНОМ. The concert arrangement of this piece for piano solo is by VILLI SARGSYAN.

A gorgeous theme. It is well suited for the Khachaturian ballet from which it comes. The ballet performances by both Bolshoi and Kirov are very tender and graceful, very well danced. I saw the Bolshoi perform it in the New Jersey Holleybush Festival some years ago. It seems the theme can stand alone as a symphonic work as well, as it did here. Had never heard a piano arrangement of it, and found that to be quite pleasing, though short in this performance. This orchestra played it well - enjoyable to hear. Oddly enough, the theme was played in a death scene in the old movie Caligula, a rather mature movie; however, the adagio seemed quite apropos to that scene as well.... It is one of my favorite musical works in any venue.

In 1968, Omar Sherif was in the movie Mayerling, with Catherine Deneuve. This theme was the music of their love scene....because they could not be together and because the Prince, Omar, couldn't deal with his lot in life, they were found together in death. It was a mystery was it a double suicide? At any rate, the score was written not by Mr Khachaturian, but by a man called Francis Lei. The music of love from Spartacus is quite different if you care to listen. The movie Spartacus was with Kirk Douglas in 1960. I saw this in Los Angeles at the Pantages and it was also quite romantic. Listen....to both via KZbin thanks, from an old old movie buff

I didn't realize the orchestrated version left the piano out completely in the second half. Did Khachaturian write this for someone he didn't like?

Why is the arranger not mentioned here? What a waste having one of the greatest pianists alive have to sit there for more than half of it, when I think it would have been extremely beautiful especially at the climax to include a lot more piano I imagine lots of chords, arpeggios, octave runs, glissandi, this arrrangement here makes it like a competition between pianist and orchestra, instead of making music together... I usually don't type negative feedback but couldn't help myself here.

Gorgeous, and Boris is one of my favorite pianists. But this arrangement does not make adequate use of piano and pianist. There should have been runs of piano arpeggios when the orchestra carried the theme, and crashing chords. Not a totally inactive Boris. Who orchestrated this? It could have been concerto-like.
