I owe this man a lot of credit. All the way to the USA, you have inspired me since I was young. I messaged you on Facebook when I was a young boy and showed you a knife and asked what you thought. It was the coolest time of my very early teenage years, maybe before then. I now have my own knife making business and I am so thankful for your videos!!

That's great, thank you. All your knife videos (movies) are some of the most inspiring as far as getting me excited to get back out in the shop and make knives. I've spent 20 hours hand sanding before with a much less perfect result, which you doing that in 1 hour shows what you can do with right technique.
@TheExplosiveGuy
@TheExplosiveGuy 4 жыл бұрын
I've used those little stones for a while now, if you have a good variety of stones that have different hardnesses (there are harder and softer stone materials, some work better than others in different steels) and grades, you can do a lot more work than most people would think. Using the stone the way he is is the correct way to use it, the downward angle allows for maximum surface pressure on the stone, and the backstroke clears the cut. I would prefer a stone cut knife over a belt or wheel ground one any day. It involves more effort but it results in a much finer quality blade. These types of stones have been used by tool and die makers this way for centuries, you can make some amazing things with them.

Yes, these are classic moldmaking stones. One of the best in the world if we talk about abrasives (check also other things like sandpapers, polishing compounds, etc. specific for tool/mold industry).

Well, after watching your video, I went to amazon and bought some grinding sticks. I used them for the first time yesterday. The initial process of going from belt grinder to the first grit of hand sanding is usually what takes the longest. With the grinding stick, it took less than half the time and even less effort to sand out the grind lines. Thanks for sharing this great piece of wisdom!!!

Thats great. I never considered using stones instead of sand paper. I knew they existed, I've just never actually seen them used properly. I guess the question would be how long they last, and how refined does your surface need to be before you can start in with the stones. Well I'll find out because I'm definitely going to try going that way.Thanks for introducing me to them.

It's called a "slurry". Yes, it helps the process. Some stones cut properly only when you make some slurry (without it they scratch the surface, especially brand new stones). You should not clean it too often, keep the slurry fluid (add some liquid). But be careful not to "load"/glaze the stone.

Another question: the stones come with squared ends. Do you dress them to an angle or is this simply from use? Meaning you start a new stone square??
@qwertyasdfghjkl9604
@qwertyasdfghjkl9604 3 жыл бұрын
"It depends" what you are doing, what material (type/grade, hardness, geometry), what the goal is, what grade of stone and few other factors. Starting with fresh, brand new stone can cause problems like scratching the surface (very first strokes - so initial forming/dressing may help), then you must care not to clog/glaze the stone with improper lubrication.
