Yeah, Rob heard it that way growing up and even though he knew it was wrong he decided to do it the way he remembered (even though it doesn't make sense. There's a couple other instances that he knew about too.. but I"ll leave that discussion up to him to explain)

My parents sang it to me, everybody in my family knew it, and it was always pronounced “lui a” instead of “il y a”. I eventually read the lyric in more than one folksong book and was intrigued to realize it was actually written that way: “Lui a longtemps que je t’aime”. It turned out it was a holdover from Old French, most probably pre-1760, which is the year the English conquered French Canada, and thus the year after which the French language evolved in Canada independently from its evolution in France.
