In the peatlands in Indonesia, efforts should be directed towards prevention measures that result in wildfire risk reduction. We believe a participatory and inclusive approach is the most effective fire prevention strategy.
Through the promotion of peatland restoration, alternative land-use options, and well-coordinated fire prevention policies at district and landscape levels, our partner, @tropenbosindonesia1201 , leads collaborative work to reduce the risks of peatland fires in one district in West Kalimantan. The TBI approach to fire prevention in Indonesia consists of:
- Improved policies and practices through multistakeholder governance and planning
- Groundwater level management through canal blocking
- Community-based peatland monitoring through village smart patrol teams
- Peatland-adaptive agricultural practices
