In today's episode, I visit Utica, one of the most linguistically diverse cities in the country. But half of the languages will go extinct by the end of the century. Can AI save them?

Miskito language! Yay. The Miskito people in nicaragua has been resisting the dictatorship with their own Miskito-speaking political party Yatama. The Nicaraguan government refused to make propaganda in Miskito and therefore the spread of the dictatorship towards the coast has been lesser, also the government support.

If all AI can do is give you the name of a banana in Bambara or Lanna, that won't be enough. That's not acquiring a language.

It does and it will. I think preserving languages with AI is mostly to help future descendants feel a connection to their past, as well as to preserve the cultural heritage built into the language's words, idioms, etc.

From their perspective, becoming bilingual (native language that's endangered + widely spoken language) only to retain the original language for the sake of keeping it alive must be tedious for busy workers that most people tend to be. For them it might not be worth the effort of perpetuating the original tongue if there's nobody left to communicate in it. And then you have people being FORCED to adopt the new language and that's what I have a problem with (countless examples, most well known being the Uyghurs in Xinjiang).

I really loved this video, but I feel I should let you know that the grammatical gender study you mentioned with the bridges is not reliable. First off, the study was never fully published, and there have been no other studies (AFAIK) that reliably replicated its results. I also think its methodology is flawed because the masculine and feminine “genders” in languages like Spanish and German aren’t really genders, they’re more just categories, but that’s a more subjective take.

it could definitely be a part of it! but a language is extinct when it has no speakers, we need to cultivate speakers of these languages or our knowledge of them will be of very little use. we know how to speak latin but it is still a dead language.

I'm surprized you didn't tie it in with the idea of efficiency and ultimately, economy which dictates the debit of pop culture material a certain nation has. Also, ChatGPT speaks many languages, I showed my mom and she wasn't that impressed until I had it write in the style of a well known native author. :)

This tells that you are ignorant monolingual. Languages are cultures, so if other languages die that means less culture and the world is not as diverse and unique. And that just sounds depressing.

I'm not a native speaker of German or Spanish so I have no way to confirm personally, but a classic study in psychology by Lera Boroditsky and Lauren Schmidt proved this phenomenon. You can read more into it here: lera.ucsd.edu/papers/gender.pdf

no because they don't have enough data for most of these language ai does a bad job with most languages apart from English French German Spanish Japanese mandarin .some of these languages were never used online. even some languages with big populations like Fulani have almost no text online only the bible and a handful of Wikipedia articles but a lot of videos were people speak it but the title is in another language .but ai mostly relies on text now imagine trying to use it with Australian aboriginal languages with 10 speakers .

Even though I speak several languages, I don't think people should be forced to learn their indigenous language - after all, what's preventing children from learning the languages of their tribe/community/etc? Chances are, they just don't want to cause there is no point and they'd rather be playing call of duty or whatever it is kids do these days. Luckily, as you described, what will happen is that people will just be watching tiktoks/youtube while AI's will be stuck on some server forced to talk in extinct languages.
