I do wonder how many folks recognize that the phrase "Just a quiet peaceful dance" is from the 1939 Grapes of Wrath movie interpretation of Steinbeck's book of the same name. In the book the local farm owners, whose profits partially depend on being able to exploit migrant farm labor by charging them to stay in private labor camps with overpriced housing and food available only at the equally overpriced camp company store, create a plan to have a provacateur go to a dance at a nearby government-run labor camp. They want the New Deal government camp gone because they hate "socialism", but its pretty obvious that what they really want is to be able to more freely exploit the migrant laborers again without the camp in existence. The plan is to have their insider start trouble at a specific hour at which point they, along with corrupt local law enforcement, will rush into the dance using the fight as a pretense, so they can break up the camp and arrest those they consider to be communist labor organizers that are running it. A sympathetic local employer tips off the main characters in story because they have been good workers for him. The folks in the camp are then able to find and neutralize the provacateur before he can get a fight started. When the corrupt farm owners and law enforcement rush into the Dance at the appointed hour, they say that they are there to break up the fight, but there is no fight. The main character responds to them that "Its just a quiet peaceful dance". Lastly, its worth noting that everyone in California public high schools is required to read a lot Steinbeck and the Grapes of Wrath is on that list. I don't know this, but for me it has always made the connection between this phrase and a band from Los Angeles.

Growing up in a poor, blue collar, and white suburban area. Songs like this were the first time we got a picture of how it was outside of our neighborhood. RATM, NWA, Biggie, and even Sugar hill gang gave us their real life stories that mainstream didn't, and was suppressed at that time for sure. No internet, phones with a camera, bodycams on cops, or social media then! Definitely changed how I saw the world just by the music. I'm not trying to make any point on social issues, but after these lyrics, I knew who the problem was.. and realized it had nothing to do with color of their skin or religion. Thats why so many views on this type of content. Thats the first time it was understood apart from mainstream filtered narrative of the day..

You mentioned Chuck D, so you would be pleased to know that Prophets of Rage is Rage minus Zach with Chuck D and B-Real on vocals. They recorded some Rage songs with those two on vocals as well. Audioslave is Rage minus Zach with Chris Cornell on vocals. Zach had a side project called One Day As a Lion, and he was the vocalist for a hardcore punk band called Inside Out. Enjoy the rabbit hole!!

RATM actually made it pretty easy to hear who has influenced them. The album "Renegades" is all cover tunes from bands/artists as diverse as MC5, Afrika Bambaataa, Cypress Hill, Devo, Minor Threat, Bruce Springsteen, The Stooges, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. I highly suggest the sorta title track "Renegades of Funk" as they pay homage to their heroes, both musical and political.

In some cases he unplugs the chord from his guitar and taps it on his hand, using the feedback, and I'd imagine probably a wah pedal to make a lot of the scratching, screeching sounds. Pick scrapes on the lower strings can also make similar sounds if you're using the right distrtion/feedback pedals.

I wholeheartedly agree, I think it’s cause he’s not really embraced by the rap community, more so the metal community. I think it has to do with the fact that the rebellious nature of rap was kind of stripped from it once rap entered the mainstream, plus most people that I know who prefer rap over most other genres aren’t really that into metal instrumentals. But I think rage could genuinely have a resurgence among Gen Z if they were discussed more in the rap community.

First off, great reaction. Subscribed! I play guitar and scratch, and yes, he is essentially scratching on the guitar. With a turntable, you move the record forward for one sound, back for another sound and your switch cuts the sound off and on. He’s doing the same thing. He’s sliding his hand up the strings, and down the strings and using a switch to turn the sound off and on. It’s fucking genius. I’d love to see some Dead Prez reactions/reviews. Anything really. Zach (RATM singer) was on an album for Mumia called Unbound, but there was a lot of artists on that. I know they know each other tho. There are pictures of Zach and M1 hanging out. As others have mentioned, the instrumentalists of Rage Against The Machine formed the supergroup Prophets Of Rage, with the rappers from Public Enemy and Cypress Hill. That was Tom, Tim and Brad from RATM, with Chuck D from PE and B-Real from CH. The guys from Rage laid down their instrumental parts, with Chuck and B trading off on verses and choruses, though Chuck did the lion’s share of the vocals. Great reaction. Love re-living my first time hearing RATM through you. So glad that you used a lyric video. Zac's lyrics are not to be missed. Check out "Know Your Enemy" for more lyrical bombs. How many bands mention Sly and the Family Stone? Amazing. Shout out for Chuck D. Love Dead Presidents. Their debut was killer.

I love watching people who discover Rage. Lyrics are all wo good! I would suggest for the most interesting music videos sleep now in the fire. And for cool lyrics no shelter which was written for Sony for the Godzilla 2000 movie and they call them out in the very song they paid them to produce lol

If you like this song you should react to "CIA (Criminals In Action)" by KRS-1, Zack De La Rocha, and The Last Emperor. It goes just as hard!

I'm not familiar with it (yet) but it looks like Zach de la Rocha and Dead Prez along with Chuck D collaborated with a bunch of artists I don't recognize (but I'm only familiar with hip-hop that got regular rotation on MTV in the early 90sl) on something called Mumia 911.
