Is there a method behind hitting the nodes of the bars? In multiple videos I’ve seen you do this though my band instructor used to tell us to refrain from doing it, I’ve been curious as to if there is a method behind it and if so what is it?

James Hicks it creates a different sound, in this case you can see he is hitting only certain notes in the center of the bar in order for them to resonate more. In general if it isn’t written into a composition, you should be hitting the center of the bar, but hitting the node creates a lighter, less resonant sound which is useful in particular instances
