Nice job Julie! I have very dim memories of using Carville for journeys to Newcastle a handful of times in the late sixties and early seventies. I have no idea what I was doing those journeys for, I could only have been between 12 and 15 years old! I do recall thinking that Carville was a nicer station to use than Wallsend and that the Riverside Line was a more interesting but slightly slower journey than the regular Wallsend/Heaton route. A pity that they closed it all down. My dad used to tell a story about when he was an apprentice in the yards involving how he'd had a late night and hid in a railway truck for a snooze during a shift. Unluckily for him, the truck was moved and he woke up at Point Pleasant.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. I can imagine the view from the trains would have been much nicer. I love the story of your dad waking up at a totally different location, I bet he was not the only person that happened to.

The Riverside line ran past the bottom of the street where i grew up and always remember the trains running in the early mornings and evenings for the workers at Swan Hunters. There were mostly freight trains that ran during the day but it was quite a quiet line. Only ever travelled on it a few times and much prefered it to the main Wallsend line. We used to play on the grassy banks running down to the railway lines and built a Den from whatever rubbish we could find. In the Summer we would catch grasshoppers as there were an abundance of them. You are certainly right about the stationmasters father being the Stationmaster of Whitley, as that what Whitley Bay was known as before they added the ' Bay ' to the name. I'm not too sure but i think they added ' Bay' to Whitley as it was always getting confused with Whitby. Happy days .

I remember playing near the lines too, it's amazing how little we thought of safety as kids, everything was just an adventure. Thank you for confirming the Whitley thing too, I seem to recall something more about it now you have mentioned the reason why.
