What we always did on a "new used" tractor for us, we always drained all the oils, replaced with diesel fuel. Ran it for 2-3mins, didn't change the filters until AFTER we ran diesel through the system(s). Reason we did this was 2 fold, it not only cleaned all the oil passages in the engine but, also cleaned the valves in the hydraulic system. Again, only ran for 2-3mins. Besides, diesel IS fuel oil. Everything is still getting it's lubrication. After running it, we'd drain that diesel back out. You'd be surprised as to how much "junk" that diesel would clean out of the engine, transmission and hydraulic systems. We'd then put in new filters, new oils. Radiator would get drained no matter, refilled with fresh anti-freeze. The rest, would just fall into place as time and money would allow, mainly time. The tractor wouldn't be used until we were completely satisfied that we went through everything that needed to gone through. We also would always check the valve adjustments. Time, usage and previous care will show up fast once we did what we did. I believe you did the right thing with this tractor, although, still say, you should've checked the valve adjustments while you were that close to it. As for "slobbering", ALL diesels will do it if they're not "pulled hard" to re-seat the rings/valves. John Deere next generation tractors are notorious for that "slobbering" as well. This was/is a great little video series you did on the 1850. Cheers :)

Thank You Ham68, Every tractor or combine or car or truck I've done the same thing to them after getting them home no matter what the former owner said they did to it. They all get new oil and air filters and the oil changed and all the fluids checked. I have had good luck over the years with doing this and will keep on doing it to everything I buy. I gave it a bath so I could find the oil leaks easer and went over it fixing the big stuff first, In the spring the hood and sheet metal will come back off to make it easer to change all the hoses and with it down that far I'll be pulling the valve cover off to change the gasket and check the valves , I've never had any luck adjusting the valves in the winter time so spring time it is ! The big stuff being done now I can start on the little stuff and getting some tires changed . I thought I had found some good used tires but that deal fell threw and for the price they wanted for them I think I have found new ones about as cheap as the good used ones so I'm looking into them a lot more closely now because of the price. Just about every 1850 I've ever seen will slobber if you let them sit around running and not being worked but work them and it goes away , They got to earn there keep to keep them running good ! LOL Bandit

I bought my 1750 out of a fence row. Swapped in an engine an it the best tractor I own. She seeps oil in a couple spots and I have put parts on it. I'd say Oliver's were one of the best back in the day.

I pickup a 1850 diesel for my son to rebuild when he was going to school to be a diesel mechanic for Caseih. I gave $1200 for a non running tractor with a spun bearing and after he was done we have to buy a new used block and crank I spent another $ 6400.00. So in my book you have a good deal!

Oh its easy to do, You start into it and its one thing after another and before you know it your in to it deep. But you can either pitch it to the way side and just mark it down to a bad idea or you finish it up and have a good tractor when your done. But one thing for sure its something your son wont forget about anytime soon , I'll bet you still have it today too ! Bandit

The best education is hands on and he learned a lot. Everything he works on today is plug it in so the computer can tell you what wrong. A person can learn a lot working on old iron. He will never get rid of the 1850 and is looking for his next project

@@scottdeyoung373 I was always the one who got more out of hands on work than I could reading it in a book . You do it once and it sticks with you and I have parts books for a lot of the tractors and equipment I have so I'll pull it out and look at it to see how something comes apart before I turn a wrench and sometime that comes in mighty handy to find that hidden bolt or screw ! Sure makes thing easer ! A lot of guy today call themselves a mechanic when they should be called parts changers cause the computers tell them what to do, A mechanic is hands on and figures out what the problem is and fixes it and that's a big difference. But I would call your son a mechanic because you works on old iron and loves it. My sons bro in laws both went to diesel school and call themselves diesel mechanics and told me no diesel engine can run without an injector pump , They all have them. I walked them out side and popped the hood on my 96 7.3 PowerStroke and told them to find the injector pump ! They looked for 2 hours and never found it cause it doesn't have one. I told them I think you 2 need to go back to school and get your money back cause you didn't learn anything ! LOL Bandit

That is a nice original 1850. When it comes to oil and filter changes, that is the one maintenance item people seem to neglect on older tractors. I purchased a Oliver 1600 gas tractor last fall and the filters and oil had not been changed since 1994.
@banditfarmer1900
@banditfarmer1900 4 жыл бұрын
You don't find many 55 year old tractors that are still pretty much original like this, In ways it shows it was taken care of but it also shows signs of neglect as in the filters. But she has really come around and is running really good now and I still have some things to do to her to get it ready to roll come spring time but she will be standing tall and proud again when I'm done ! She might even get some new shoes ! Bandit

Well I think its time for a little talk about the 1850 and its future with me. Some have questioned why I bought it or why I would look at such a rough looking tractor. Well its simple the tractor is strait and original and in ways it shows it was taken care of to be this old and still strait and original, But it also shows signs of neglect in the filters being like they are. But the filters are changed and a lot of the oils and I've made a lot of adjustments to it and its closer to being ready to work again. No I could have spent $5500 to $7500 for an 1850 and still have to do a lot of what I've already done to it too so I figured buying this one like I did for the price I gave for it when I'm done I'll have $4000 or a little less in it. This will be one I know from front to back and I know will be right and will last me for a long time. This is how and what I've always done as a small farmer and how I save money in the long run on equipment. I hope you enjoyed watching. Bandit

Every one asks me why I bought this 1850, And the answer was simple Price ! You can buy a so called good one ready to go for $6500 or more and still end up working on it doing much of the same work I've done to mine. I bought this one cheap enough that I can work on it and fix it up the way I want it. When I looked at it I was told it was a one owner tractor and it looked like it, It was good strait and original and had a good solid base to work on. I knew going it it was going to need work and need tires seat light switch muffler, I figured the hydra-power didnt work it might need the injector pump rebuilt and the hydraulic pump might be bad so I figured on this going in. But the price was right and now that it has a new water pump fuel pump injector pump rebuilt and new hydraulic pump and all new hoses and ends seat light switch muffler all new filters and oils and 4 new tires and tubes and the hydra-power now working I have an 1850 everyone wants ! Best part is its all paid for and I'll have many years of trouble free service out of it. I bought it cheap enough I could work on it and now that the work is done and its right I have about $6500 in it and I know its right and what I have. I would much rather buy a tractor like this and fix it up and know what I have than buy a tractor with a slick paint job that is a worn out turd ! She might be 55 years old but she is in good shape now and I think she will out last me now ! She still turns heads even if she is still in her original working clothes . Bandit

Bandit I think that tractor is a lot like how our neighbor takes care of his tractors. They are never worried about greasing it changing oil or filter. But they never beat their tractors they don't ask more out of them then what they can't do and always go in the shed at night and the sheet metal on them is all straight like your 1850. what I am trying to say is some people just aren't going to do maintenance but they are not going to be running into things or beating them when they use them I kind of think that's the way this 1850 was takin care of.

There are a lot of guys like this around here too and there are some that are just nutty about greasing and oiling stuff up and baby it, They keep one looking like its brand new even if its 10 years old. So far on the 1850 its been mostly normal maintenance anyone would do to a tractor they just bought. I think when I'm done working on it she will be a good one for me for many years to come, The work continues and each day she is running better and looking better. The hydra-power has Type A transmission fluid in it but that is hard to find and everyone runs Dextron2 in them now. This one the oil is really heavy and looks like 303 hydraulic oil and it burnt looking. I'm going to drain it and fill it with diesel fuel and let it sit over night and drain it and refill it with the right oil and a new filter and see what happens. Its a 50/50 shot of it working or not but when I bought it I figured it didn't work and figured it would have to be replaced but there is a chance it might work again. I have to replace the hydraulic hoses and the ends before I can test the pressure in it but so far the oil level is holding steady so I don't think it has a leak inside. There is still more to do before I think about putting the cab back on but I want the cab on it just to stay out of the sun. Bandit

Bandit, you have to think about all of 2nd people who used to farm. I remember an old man who was a millionaire and raised purebred Herefords. His tractor's consisted of a H and a M. If he needed something done, he hired it done. His thinking was if there is oil on the stick your good, and if duct tape or baling wire won't fix thing5, then it's not broken.

Just changing oil and filters today does not correct damage inflicted if oil and filter changes were neglected previously. Just saying. I do think you bought it right. If luck dictates an overhaul or such, well, you now know what you got. And you get full use out of the rebuild. The tin looks good. Comment from an earlier video about 1850 vs 4020. I'd bet you would feel better after running JD day after day, every available hour that a spring planting season would afford. Much more operator accommodating is what I'm talking. It reminds me of the Super 88 dad traded in on 4010. Always tried to keep that 4010 running 24 hr. around the clock working ground back in the day. Shut her off once or twice a day to check fluids. The Super MTA, freshly overhauled for the following spring (1964) used about as much gasoline per hr. as 4010 used diesel. So dad traded MTA for 4020 for spring of 65. Put fender radios on and a saddle fuel tank on each (off old Chevy semi tractor). Much easier finding help to keep the 4010 & 4020 working round the clock, thought it was heaven with the improved comfort. I miss spoke, the JD A went for 4020. The M went for 2510.

I would have liked to see the filter that was on it and what the oil looked like but the guy changed to filter and oil the day before I got it so no chance of seeing what everything looked like, It would have been nice to see it and cut the filter apart and see what it looked like inside but that cant happen now. What I saw in the oil when I drained it it was black and nasty and there was no sense in cutting the ford filter apart cause it only had a few hours on it. The big reason I wanted that oil out of it was because it was 15w40 rotella and I don't want that oil in anything I own plus its not the oil for it in my book, It might work but from previous expereance it doesn't work to good in old diesel engines so I'll run what I know will work. I had a 4010JD when dad had the 1850 and to tell you the truth I preferred to run the Oliver over the 4010 any day, The 4010 was a good tractor don't get me wrong but I couldn't take leaning forwards all the time to shift or use the hydraulics and it killed my back. I prefer the Oliver seat to a JD and the controls on the Oliver I like better too. Bandit

@@banditfarmer1900, I'd like to comment on oil. Back in the 60's when going to diesel powered tractors and Detroit 2cycle in trucks. Recommended oil was series 3 and straight 30wt., as long as you could get her started. (Those Detroits had a habit of leaking oil ya know.) Late 60s & into 70s, some of the local steel truckers and some produce haulers from the south, Florida & Carolina's, who were using 4cycle Cummins and Cats were using lighter weights, like 20 or 20/20, don't quit remember the difference. Now think, when those produce haulers had their loaded trailer doors closed, that truck seldom shut down until produce reached its destination. Especially if strawberries where inside. Stop once to take on fuel and check refer/trailer and relieve yourself. No rest for driver or truck. And JD was calling for the 10/30, if I remember right. Although dealer said 30 was still good. Then with 4430 and 8630 and newer 2cycle Detroits it recommended 15/40. Of coarse series 3 was out of date, maybe CC/CD. Anyhow, the old stuff had to take what the newer equipment used. Now, going back to the trucker friends, owner/operators, who were already using the lighter oil. They figured the lighter oil cooled and lubricated better. So update to today. Seems like the older equipment I know of today, unless it needs an overhaul, runs perfectly fine on today's dinosaur Rotella-4, Del 400, JD, CaseIH, Moble Delvac, even the synthetics and 15/40 wt. I've seen MMO clean old engines and bring back the zip I forgot they had. And for the old gasoline engines, 366 & 427s, Shell man says the RotellaT-4 (dinosaur oil) has the needed zinc. If you still want 30wt., and I still use in a couple lesser used older and not too long for an overhaul, you can still get it. Its still available last drum I bought. Maybe your WolfsHead has the proper additives for the 1850. I'm not familiar with that brand. Would like to know though. Please share.

@@fredrickkohlman9587 I drove an old IH cab over with a V6 71 Detroit in it and those engines leaked oil every ware ! This was a company truck and it got good maintenance done to it but you couldn't keep them from leaking at all, Driving down the road you would keep an eye on the oil pressure gauge and if got down to about 25 psi you knew it needed oil. Well the regular driver of this truck had a funnel in the cab he could add oil to it driving down the road, Grab that blue gallon jug and pour 1/2 of it in and keep rolling and the oil pressure would come right back up to 40 psi and you were good for another 400 miles before you had to add some more ! LOL I've only owned one new truck in my life and that was my 95 F350 5.8 auto flat bed so my views are limited on new or newer engines, I'm used to old stuff with lots on miles and hours on them and from what I've found over the years is the new oils are not heavy enough because they thin down to much and wont hold up to the looser engines and you loose oil pressure. Yes the engines are worn but I can not see overhauling an engine just so I can run the new thinner oils in them when I can use a heaver oil like they used to be and the engine run good and holds good oil pressure. If I were to rebuild the 1850 all the specks are still from when it was built back in the 60's so I would still have to take that into consideration when picking an oil to use in it. My book says 30W oil but if your running it in the winter and its below 30* you can run 10w40 diesel oil in it because of the cold weather. But in the summer in the heat 30w is what it should have in it but the problem is 30w now is not the 30w of then and is why I went to the 40w of todays oils to run in it. Thing is the 40w of today is based on engine specks for a new diesel engine of today using a 40w oil in it so there is a lot to think about on this subject. Any oil you buy today on a store shelf is for todays new cars and truck that way they cant be sued for selling someone the wrong oil so they made it easy for them not to be sued by only putting out what the new engines take. If you got an old engine its guess your best ! Bandit

But I knew that when I bought it but after looking at a lot of used tires and there prices and believe or not I have found new ones cheap enough to make it a possibility to buy them and stay in my budget for the project . I hope we see a video of the old Ferguson coming back to life, I wish I would have had a video camera back when I did the long or a good camera to take pictures of the process but I didn't have one yet but I do now. @banditfarmer1900
@banditfarmer1900 4 жыл бұрын
When I first got the tractor in the video of unloading it off the trailer it had a lot of white and blue smoke and no blow by. White smoke is unburned fuel and blue smoke is burning oil. When I got into it and found out how old the air filter was and how dirty it was I had a pretty good idea what was going on and when I pulled the primary fuel filter off and seen it was so cruddy looking I really wonder how it ran ! With the air filter being so dirty the engine was pulling hard on it and it was starved for air so what it was doing was pulling hard enough that it was pulling air from the crack case past the rings and bringing oil with it thus burning it and was ware the white smoke unburned fuel and blue smoke was from the oil it sucked into the cylinders cause by the dirty air filter. But after changing the air and fuel and oil filters it was able to breath again and it runs so much better now and there is little to no smoke from the engine now but oddly there is still no blow by and that's a good thing. When I was on the road with it I pushed it as hard as I could to video the exhaust so I could see better the colors of the smoke coming out the muffler witch gives me a better idea to what is going on in the engine. What I saw was good cause it was telling me that the engine was running a lot better now. One of the things you saw in that video was yellowish brown smoke and that is built up sulfur burning off and out of the engine from fuel and oil and that's a good thing to see it coming out. The color of the exhaust can tell you a lot about an engine if you know what your looking for. Bandit

I have thought all along that the original engine went bad the tractor so it sat for years, down the road the combine that used this motor was replaced with a newer model and the motor was put in this tractor and maybe it was used but not too much that is the reason for the condition of the sheet metal and the obvious lack of maintenance
@banditfarmer1900
@banditfarmer1900 4 жыл бұрын
Until I gave it a bath I figured it was the original engine in it but as the grim came off it and I started seeing red I started getting the idea that this was a combine engine and when the numbers appeared on the side I knew the engine had been replaced. When or why I have no clue all I have to go on is what the guy I bought it from had to say about it and beings it was his next door neighbor he knows a little about it. He said his neighbor farmed until he was 88 and had a stroke and had to quit farming and the farm was rented out and the equipment sat till he passed at 91 and it sat another year before the neighbor asked him to help clean the place up and he bought the tractors and some of the equipment and started to sell stuff off. So it sat for 5 years at least in the barn and from what I see and can figure out the story fits for it condition, An 80 year old man aint going to be as on top of maintenance as a young guy would be so I can understand the way it is. Back tires are worn down because they took his driver liecens so he drove the tractor to town (about 2 miles away) to get what he needed. When I looked at it and was told what the guy knew about it things kind of fit together for the way it looked and I just used my best judgement on buying it and I'm glad I did. Bandit

NF tractors are very easy to maneuver around and back wagons in but the NF has it disadvantages to them, They are lighter in the front end than a wide front, Need a guide to stick out to make it easer to plow with no wheel in the furrow and as everyone knows you have to watch them on hilly ground for tip overs. Well, all I can say is that you got one hell of a deal - a lot of quality tractor for the money! Yes, you did the right thing. I would have done the same. And have, with lots of equipment purchases - with a little elbow grease and minimal investment, end up with a really good result. For example, about 6 years ago I bought my White 5100 4 row corn planter. It was showing wear, but was a good solid machine and what most people didn't like about it was that it was wide rows. For that reason, I got it cheap. But then I replaced all the chains (11), all the disk openers, and the wiring harness, including the sensors in the seed tubes. What I have now is like an almost new planter which works great for little investment. Very similar to what you did. And I'd do the exact same thing all over again!

I have some equipment most people wouldn't look at but like the MF #88 plow that I know for a fact hasn't been a crossed 200 total acres in it life or an Oliver 520 baler that baled a total of 3000 bales total in its life a JD 4400 gas combine with 1270 hours on it and a Long 900 with 700 hours on it now a 10' Bush hog disk with the blades still at 19 7/8" blades on it and there is more gone from rust than ware and a barely used Case 95 manure spreader. All these are in great shape ready to go and work but may not look as good as most people want but paint don't make it work better just costs you more money ! LOL This Oliver is no different sure its not been taken the best care of but its strait and solid and with a little work most of witch is normal maintenance work but a new set of tires and seat and a good clean up and its a $6500 $7000 tractor and I wont have but a little over 1/2 of that in it. I know mine was a good deal because I had date written receipts on an engine rebuild an hours documented and a brand new clutch. Since the the sheet metal was bad I bought it for 1700$ you see 135 mint for 6000$ I'd never pay that much for one. When I can buy a mint ford 3930 for 6000 with 1200hrs a 1990. farmer that's exactly how I was raised and I'm still like that. When I was looking for tractors I had no help I can do anything on a chevy truck up to a 99 but new stuff I gotta find one in good shape or buy new. I cant take a newer truck and work on it if there selling it for less cause it needs a little work. But I told my uncle about my massey 135 he said get it. But I was gonna buy a 69 Oliver 1450 it was mint just needed a starter switch and a seat but he wanted 4500. I do wish I would have bought it though a diesel 50hp compared to the 45hp gas plus the Oliver I'm pretty sure its weight is about 1500 more I think. Another thing was my uncle said that fiat diesel is really hard to find stuff for. But I'm glad i paid 1700 for the massey cause my 2008 chevy had that motor that went down to 4 cylinder well the top end went out 3200$ so the Oliver would have broke me but that 1450 was beautiful if I had my old phone I would send you a pic. I think this new tractor will be good for ya you aren't putting nothing of your even doing hoses and a muffler. What's your plans with it all implements or one thing specific. I hope you put the biggest plow you own on that thing I love watching plows turn over soil. When I was a kid my uncle would plant this stuff I forgot but what it was but every year we would turn it over it was like turning over sod. It was all nice and uniform. We would use his international 586 with a 4x16 and the dirt black as night then the dirt would dry made it look not as good. The dirt had a clay like consistency so when the mullboard pushed it over I shined as it were polished. I've said it numerous times cant wait to see what you use it for, but I'm looking most forward to that yellow truck of yours.
